Two Create A Base For Your Shadows

The key to learning how to draw 3D letters is figuring out lettering shadows and light. So first you decide where your light is coming from. Typically youll pick either the right side or the left however, the top and bottom are also an option. For the sake of simplicity, I tend to go with the left side. The light and the shadows will always be on opposite sides from each other.

Once youve chosen a side, take your thin black pen and carefully trace along the edge of your letters. Be sure to only trace on one side of each line!

These black lines are key to making your letters pop! They also create some definition and give your lettering a polished clean look.

Dont make your letters too thin, as we want to leave room for some highlights. A good rule of thumb to follow is thick down, thin up. This means that you apply pressure on your downlines to make them thicker, and keep the pressure as light as you can every time a letter strokes upward.

How To Draw Graffiti Letters Step

I created a graffiti app for Android-smartphones.

In this app I just want to focus on how to draw graffiti letters step-by-step and the step-by-step drawing process of graffiti, like seen in the example next to this text.

There is a tutorial for every letter of the alphabet.

So, you just have to grab a sheet of paper, a pencil and markers, and follow the instructions step-by-step.

It will help you to learn every step and give you an idea of how to design a graffiti on your own.

The creation process of a graffiti piece usually starts with a tag/handstyle. The letters are constructed around the tag.

Constructing a letter is quite similar. The following steps describe the steps shown in the image above.

  • Step: Start just with lines
  • Step: add blocks around the lines
  • Step: style the blocks by adding serifs and enlarging elements of the letter
  • Step: add a gradient fill-in
  • Step: add blocks to make the graffiti look 3D
  • Step: add the keyline, bubbles as background effect and highlights on top of the fill-in
  • Event though the design process is not exactly the same every time. You can use it as a guideline and vary fill-in, backgrounds, the type of 3D-effect, shadows etcetera etcetera.
