How to Draw a Simple 3D Chair

This is where the messiness and confusion arises. Most books will show a chair conformation slightly sideways, making it impossible to copy. Worse, it’s really difficult to show which substituents are axial vs equatorial.

Bowties’ as I like to call them, are ok for the computer generated chair conformation.;Here is my simple version which my tutoring clients use on exams with great success.

Step 1:

Draw 2 parallel lines slightly offset from each other. Top left or top right will give you alternate chairs.

Step 2:

Place a dot above the upper opening, and another below the lower opening

Step 3:

Connect the dots

Kinda sounds like the directions for drawing a cyclohexane, doesn’t it?

But the chair confirmation doesn’t stop here. It’s important to;understand how to position;your substituents. And even more important to show what is axial and what is equatorial.

So let’s move on:

Step 4:

Identify the up tip’ OR;down tip’ of your chair conformation, and draw a straight line up or down parallel to the y-plane. This is your first axial substituent.

The chair conformation has alternating axial up, axial down so once you have that single axial substituent move on to..

Step 5:

Alternate your axial substituents up and down all the way around your cyclohexane

Every carbon on the chair conformation has 1 substituent axial and the other equatorial.;If axial is up equatorial is down, if equatorial is up then axial is down.

Step 6:

## When Should You Draw In 3d

The short answer is: whenever possible.

First of all, whether youre drawing a;transparent or opaque object, youll want to approach it the same way. As a beginner, its always a good idea to draw all sides of the object. This practice will help you improve accuracy, so you can draw objects that make more sense.

Using the toy car example below, drawing the entire object in 3D helps me know where to draw each wheel instead of guessing where they should go.

Lets consider an actual example: we need to design and make a small armchair for hotels. Armchairs are going to be placed in four-star hotel rooms next to the breakfast table. Armchairs must be easily movable and have a smooth shape to either raise positive reactions and welcome the guest when entering hotel room. We want a contemporary armchair in polyurethane foam with ideally a non-removable cover in faux leather. Armchair must be fireproof.

Once design brief is shared, designer researches markets and demands, either to find similar products or to be sure there is nothing similar available. He also thinks about how to improve look or ergonomics of existing furniture and how new furniture can be successful.

How To Draw A Simple Chair in 3D: One Point Perspective

Today I am going to show you how to draw a dining room chair in the correct perspective. It is pretty easy to draw and one you learn how to draw this chair, other chairs and furniture should come easier to you. We will show you how to draw the chair with the following step by step drawing tutorial that guides you with simple shapes.

## Creating A Pyramidal Hipped Roof

In SketchUp, you can easily draw a hipped roof, which is just a simple pyramid. For this example, you see how to add the roof to a simple one-room house, too.

To draw a pyramid :

• With the Rectangle tool , draw a rectangle large enough to cover your building. To create a true pyramid, create a square instead of a rectangle. The SketchUp inference engine tells you when youre rectangle is a square or a golden section.
• With the Line tool , draw a diagonal line from one corner to its opposite corner.
• Draw another diagonal line from one corner to another. In the figure, you see how the lines create an X. The example shows the faces in X-Ray view so you can see how the rectangle covers the floor plan.
• Select the Move tool and hover over the center point until a green inference point is displayed.
• Move the cursor in the blue direction to pull up the roof or pyramid, as shown in the figure. If you need to lock the move in the blue direction, press the Up Arrow key as you move the cursor.
• When your roof or pyramid is at the desired height, click to finish the move.

## Converting Haworth To Chair

The final piece of these conversions is often to draw a complete chair conformation of the pyranose. The trick is to remember that just like the Haworth projections, the chair conformations also have the well-defined up and down positions!

Looking at the glucopyranose from above, you now can easily draw the chair conformation for it in a general form:

And, just as easily, you can show a chair conformations specifically for the -D-glucopyranose and the -D-glucopyranose:

So, for as long as you can properly draw the substituents positions in your chair conformation, you should be able to easily convert Haworth to chair! Surprisingly, but a lot of instructors skip the Haworth projections. If your instructor didnt cover those, I still highly recommend you learn those as they come in handy as a middle step in the Fischer to Haworth to chair conversions. Youll also need to know those for your MCAT, DAT, PCAT, or other post secondary standardized tests.

This pretty much summarizes a clean and straightforward method of converting from Fischer projection to Haworth projection, to chair conformation for your typical aldohexoses. Occasionally, instructors will ask you to do the opposite and convert from the chair to Haworth and Fischer. So, to be ready for the test, make sure youre practicing the backwards steps too so you dont get caught off-guard on the exam

Testing has not ended, yet: as the armchair is covered, also the adaptability of coating to the structure needs to be tested so that no issues happen when upholstering. Once everything is verified and settled, prototype is ready to be manufactured for further controls.

## S For Converting Fischer To Haworth

Now, to make a cyclic hemiacetal from your linear Fischer projection, youll need to follow a few simple steps:

• Draw a Haworths stem like in the picture above
• Number your atoms 1 through 5 starting from the anomeric carbon and going clockwise
• If your sugar was D, then the carbon #6 is going to be looking up
• The right groups on carbons 2, 3, and 4 in the Fischer projection go onto the bottom positions in Haworth
• The left groups on carbons 2, 3, and 4 in the Fischer projection go onto the up positions in Haworth
• This might sound like a long sequence of steps, but its actually a fairly simple process once you get a hang of it. Lets look at a few more examples to make it a little easier for you to practice the steps. For this exercise, I want to compare the structures of D-glucose, L-idose, and L-glucose:

Using the steps from above we get the following Haworth projections:

I kept the same color scheme to make it a little easier to see whats going on and track the groups as we go from one structure to another.

To create a 3D model in SketchUp, youre constantly switching among the drawing tools, views, components, and organizational tools. In this article, you find several examples that illustrate ways you can use these tools together to model a specific shape or object.

## Modeling A Building From A Footprint

In SketchUp, the easiest way to start a 3D building model is with its footprint. After you have a footprint, you can subdivide the footprint and extrude each section to the correct height.

Here are a few tips for finding a buildings footprint:

• If youre modeling an existing building, trace the outline of the building with the drawing tools. Unless the building is obscured by trees, you can find an aerial photo on Google Maps and trace a snapshot. From within SketchUp, you can , as shown in the following figure.
• If you dont have an aerial photo of the existing building you want to model, you may need to try the old fashioned route: measuring the exterior to create the footprint and drawing the footprint from scratch. If literally taking measurements of an entire building is impractical, you can employ tricks such as using the measurement of a single brick to estimate overall dimensions or taking a photo with an object or person whose length you do know. If youre able to start with a snapshot of your footprint, the following steps guide you through the process of tracing that footprint. First, set up your view of the snapshot:

• Select Camera > Standard Views > Top from the menu bar.
• Select Camera > Zoom Extents to make sure you can see everything in your file.

## Get The Backrest & Back Leg Angles

The back rest and back legs of chairs tend to be on an angle so we will add that in this step.

You can erase all of the perspective lines from the previous steps as well as part of the box as shown in the first example above.

Next draw the angled lines for the backrest and the back legs on the side of the chair that is closer to the viewer. These should start from the top and bottom right side corners of the box and meet at the line that defines the top of the seat. Next from the first vanishing points project a line to where the two angled backrest/back legs lines meet. This line will help give you the correct positioning of the far side backrest/back legs lines. Draw these from the far back top and bottom corners of the box meeting at the point where the perspective line intersects the upper left side of the seat.
