To celebrate this years winter solstice and the once-in-a-lifetime conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter, I drew the stippled star mandala design below. Its basically a series of 5-pointed stars drawn by stippling thousands of dots. Im holding a new 3-hour workshop on stippling and geometric art on Saturday 6th February but in the meantime, here are two different ways to draw a simple 5-pointed star.

      How To Draw The Eight

The star and cross is one of the simplest geometric designs Ive come across and if you are new to Islamic geometric and illumination, its a great place to start. Well start with the eight-pointed star, known as an octagram in geometry or khatam in Islamic geometry.

In traditional Arabic geometric art, the designs are drawn using only a straight edge and a compass. Theres something very satisfying and really quite magical about drawing patterns in this way. Its surprisingly accurate too!

      1. To start. draw a circle with your compass followed by a horizontal line through the centre of your circle. No measuring is needed but make sure your circle doesnt fill your paper. You will need a reasonable space around it as youll see if you scroll down a few images first.

        2. Using the exact same radius as your original circle draw with the point of your compass in the red points below, and draw two more semi-circles.

          3. Keeping with the same radius, place the point of your compass at the intersection shown with a red dot and draw the arc also shown in red below.

              9. Now draw a second square at 45 degrees to the first. This is known as a dynamic square.

                10. Now using an ink pen or coloured pencil and a straight edge, trace over the lines to draw an 8 pointed star.

How To Draw The Star And Cross Tessellation

Tessellation is when you repeat one element to form a repeated pattern that fits together without any gaps or overlaps. When you draw a series of 8 pointed stars both across and above and below a cross is formed between the stars. There are a great many other ways to form tessallations from this eight pointed star but this is one of the most common from what Ive seen.

Heres how the star and cross pattern looks.

The largest I have ever made is on a 4.5″ radius for a Captain America shield, but you can go as big or small as you need.

First: find center of your circle and draw a center line through it at least the length of the diameter of the size you need for your star. A little big is better.

Second: draw the circle of the radius size for your star.

In geometry, a triangular prism is a three-sided prism it is a polyhedron made of a triangular base, a translated copy, and 3 faces joining corresponding sides. A right triangular prism has rectangular sides, otherwise it is oblique. All cross-sections parallel to the base faces are the same triangle.

                    Your Drawings Are Complete

Congratulationsyou did it! Now you can draw different kinds of stars. I hope the compass and protractor became your best friends, and together youll create many more geometrical objects.

Creating technically perfect figures requires skill and patience, so if your stars came out slightly uneven at the first attempt, dont give upjust try again. Sometimes the tools we use allow imperfections, like the inaccuracy of the protractors grid.

At the same time, remember to have fun and enjoy the process!

                    Usage In Indian Religions

Six-pointed stars have also been found in cosmological diagrams in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The reasons behind this symbol’s common appearance in Indic religions and the West are unknown. One possibility is that they have a common origin. The other possibility is that artists and religious people from several cultures independently created the hexagram shape, which is a relatively simple geometric design.

Within Indic lore, the shape is generally understood to consist of two trianglesone pointed up and the other downlocked in harmonious embrace. The two components are called “Om” and the “Hrim” in Sanskrit, and symbolize man’s position between earth and sky. The downward triangle symbolizes Shakti, the sacred embodiment of femininity, and the upward triangle symbolizes Shiva, or Agni Tattva, representing the focused aspects of masculinity. The mystical union of the two triangles represents Creation, occurring through the divine union of male and female. The two locked triangles are also known as ‘Shanmukha’the six-faced, representing the six faces of Shiva & Shakti’s progeny Kartikeya. This symbol is also a part of several yantras and has deep significance in Hindu ritual worship and history.

The Shatkona is a symbol used in Hinduyantra that represents the union of both the male and feminine form. More specifically it is supposed to represent Purusha , and Prakriti . Often this is represented as ShivaShakti.

While I love the elegance of drawing geometric designs simply using a compass and a straight edge, if you want to draw a more complicated star design you may find it easier to use the following method.

You can simply divide 360 degrees by 5 giving you 72 degrees and mark off using your protractor 5 equal division of your circle 72, 144 , 216 , and 288 degrees.

                      As previously, connect point 1 to 2, 3 to 4, 4 to 5 and 5 to 1.

Draw The Corners Of The Star

Draw the lines to the lower corners of the pentagon starting from the upper ones. The lines should cross exactly in the center.

Use one more line to connect the opposite corners.

Erase the circle and leave the star only.

Also erase the lines inside the star, leaving only the contour.

Divide the star into two equal halves.

Draw two lines from the upper corners which are being intersected in the center.

Similarly, draw the lines from the lower corners.

The star is ready. Color it yellow and orange.

How To Draw A Star Using A Compass

To draw a star using a compass, you need to draw a big circle first using the compass. Make a dot on top of your circle using a pencil. Then move the point of your compass to the dot. Do not change the radius of your compass when moving. Turn your compass to make a pencil mark that crosses your circle on the left and right. Now move the point of the compass to one of the marks without changing the radius and make another mark on the edge. Continue marking until you have a total of 6 marks. Use a ruler to draw a triangle. And then draw another triangle upside down. Now your six-pointed star is done. You can erase the lines on the inside the star or leave it as is.

                        What Is The Christmas Star

This winter solstice, 21st December, the two largest planets Jupiter and Saturn appeared closer together in the sky then they have for some 800 years. It was rumoured that they will be so close that they will look like one bright star. There is some debate about this but whether they will or not depends on where you are in the world, how good your eyesight is and the weather conditions. If you have poor eyesight, you may well see them as one bright star, and due to the time of year, its no surprise that people are calling it a Christmas Star. Last night was overcast where I live and the best night for seeing the stars during this conjunction may turn out to be Christmas Eve.

So what was the original Christmas Star? Some believe that the unusually large bright star referred to in the Bible that appeared at Jesus birth was a conjunction of planets. But that is just one of a number of theories. We dont know the year of Jesus birth or even the time of year for sure.

                        5. Draw a line connecting the two crosses.

                          6. Place the point of your compass in the centre of your circle and draw two more arcs as shown below.

                            7. Place the point of your compass on the intersection of the horizontal line with the left-hand side of the circle and draw to more arcs that cross with the previous two.

                              8. Join the two crosses you have just created with a second vertical line. This line runs parallel to the original vertical line.

How To Draw A Pentagon With A Compass

A pentagon is a five-sided shape where the sides are equal in length. It can be a useful shape in prop making it can also serve as the basis for a five-sided star. It may be difficult to lay out with standard drafting tools, but with the method below, you can draw one with just a compass and a straight-edge.

Start off with a circle of a size that will perfectly fit your pentagon that is, each corner of your pentagon will touch the outside of your circle.

In my circle, I have drawn two perpendicular lines which run through the center point O. Where they cross the circle, I have labeled A, X, Y and Z .

I have bisected line OY to find point M that is, M is exactly halfway between O and Y.

Put the point of the compass on M and extend it so the pencil touches A. Draw an arc that crosses line XO we will call this intersection R.

Move the point of the compass onto A and extend it so the pencil now touches R. The radius of your compass is now equal to the length of the sides of your pentagram. When you draw an arc from R to your circle, you will find point B.

When you move the compass to pivot on B and draw an arc, it will cross the circle at two points: A and a new point C.

Returning your compass to A, draw an arc that crosses the right side of the circle to find E.

Move the compass to E and draw an arc to find D. In the picture above, I drew the arc so it crossed the circle twice, at point D and again at point A. You dont need to actually do that.

Measure The Angles For The Star Points

For those who don’t remember this from geometry, a circle has 360 degrees. If a 5-point star sits inside a circle, that means each point is 360/5 = 72 degrees away from its neighbors.

This next step is to mark the points of the star on the circle using your protractor. The center line you drew is step 1 is your zero-degree mark. Measure one hash mark at 72 degrees, and the next at 144 degrees, counting counter-clockwise. Flip your protractor, start at zero degrees again, and make the same measurements in a clockwise direction. the two sides split by the center line should look like mirror images when you have them complete.

Aligning The Fill To The Star

Now, the center of the Conical fill is not always in the center of a shape. It all depends on the shape, where youve dragged the centerpoint of the fill, and a couple of Mt. Olympus muses. And the effect in this tutorial will be spoiled unless the center of the conical fill is also the center of the star shape. So you do this:

                                        • Crank the View Quality slider on the Standard Bar to the left so youre viewing the wireframe of the star.

                                        • With the Selector tool, click on the star shape. You will see an x at the original center of the star. Drag a horizontal and then a vertical guide to the exact center of the x. Zoom in if you need to. See Figure 6.

                                        • Look carefully at the intersection of the guides for a single dot that represents the center of the conical fill. If you cant see it, drag the end color handle a little and the center dot will be easy to see. Now drag it to the intersection of the guides. You can set the View quality back to Excellent by dragging the slider all the way to the right.
