How To Draw A Realistic Dog

Want to depict a real dog on paper? In this tutorial, let us draw a dog, a Dachshund to be specific, that looks real, life-like.

    You will need:

Pencil, eraser, drawing paper, colored pencils or crayons

    How to draw:

  • Start by drawing the outline of the dogs body. The Dachshund has a sleek, horizontal body. So be careful not to draw it taller than it should be. See figure 2.1.
  • Gently extend the base to add the forelegs, belly, and the hind legs. Observe that the legs of the dogs are very short, and should be kept that way to get a realistic impression. See figure 2.2.
  • Go on to add detail to the picture. Add the ear by drawing a curved line above the neck. Dachshunds have very big ears compared to other dogs. A small line near the jaw should indicate the mouth and another curvy speck near the edge of the jaw for the nose. See figure 2.3.
  • Draw the eye and start shading the image in black and brown, to give it a realistic look.

How To Draw A Dog: The Detailed Method

Drawing a detailed dog is a lot like drawing a simple dog, though it will likely take you more time and effort. Again, understand the simple shapes that make up a dog. Look at skeletal structure and muscle groups to help you understand what they look like under all that fur, as those are the features youll start with before you add more detail.

First and foremost: start simple. Its easier to draw a familiar yellow lab than it is to draw something more complex, like a Puli. That goes for shapes, too. Underdrawing is even more important when drawing detailed dogs than it is for simple dogs, even if you feel like youre erasing most of the work.

And erasing is a big part of drawing detailed dogs. You probably wont get it perfect the first time, but thats okay! The dog up above was my first attempt, and if I continued to practice I would get better. Erase and try again and again. You might not notice your skill improving, but every drawing you do brings you closer to the artist you want to be.

Referring to the reference picture will help a lot with having them look like the example. They will have some short, curved lines above them to look like some cute eyelashes for them.

You could also use some more simple circles with dots in them for a less detailed look if you prefer!

Once youve drawn in the eyes, you can draw in a cute little nose. The mouth beneath it will be very curved with an open mouth and tongue. When youve finished the face, its time for step 6!

Our left-hand puppy needs a body. If you recall your elementary-school education in shapes, the framework for the body is a parallelogram. The left side extends down and to the left of the eggs center line, the right side from the bottom of the egg.

On the right side, were drawing in the rest of the puppys head and face. First, were going to sketch in one more guide line, from the top of the body oval toward the head. • Lets begin by drawing the face of the puppy. Notice that one side of the face is bumpy to indicate the folds of its chubby cheeks. Add the ears too, as illustrated in figure 6.1.
  • Next, draw the front legs and torso. Start with a curved line from the chin and extend that to the left fore leg. You can draw the other leg starting from the torso, as shown in figure 6.2.

  • Add the eyes, nose, and a curvy line on the face for the mouth and your puppy is ready to be colored.
  • Legs And A Tail For One Puppy A Neck For The Other

Sketch a line through the center of the body to help position the puppys legs. A modified number 2 from the left side gives you the hind leg. A sickle or moon shape connecting the bottom left of the parallelogram to the hind leg forms the tail. Where the head meets the body on the right side, draw a line down to the base to start the outside leg. The bodys center line shows where the middle leg starts. A small hoop next to it is good enough for the back hind leg.

Our right-hand puppy now needs a neck and collar. All the neck requires is two curved lines to join the two ovals. The collar is formed by two curved lines connecting both sides of the neck.

Now that you have the basic dog shape down, you can add just a little more detail. Focus on drawing the larger features of a dogthe snout, feet, and legs. Again, draw shapes rather than detailed features, as youll add all the little stuff later.

Fill in the places where those features meet the body, and connect the larger sections of the body together. For the first few steps, don’t press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle as a guide for the puppy’s head. The circle doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide. Leave enough room on the right side to draw the puppy’s body.

Step 2: Draw two intersecting curved lines inside the head as guide lines to help you when drawing the puppy’s facial features later on.

Step 3: Draw a small circle on the lower part of the head as a guide for the puppy’s muzzle.

Step 4: Draw two circles under the puppy’s head as guides for the body. The first circle should be just a bit bigger than the head. The top part should be behind the puppy’s head. The second circle should be around the same size, and it should be right next to the first. You can draw them farther apart if you want a longer puppy like a dachshund.

Step 5: Draw a couple of short lines to connect the two circles and complete the guide for the puppy’s body. Draw another short, curved line on the right side as a guide for the puppy’s tail.
