Different Expressions Different Face Shapes
Depending on what kind of expression youre going for, the face will have different shapes.
For example, if youre drawing a surprised character, eyes growing big and a long O for the mouth, then the face will look more elongated.
On the other hand, if youre drawing someone angry, where the eyes and eyebrows grow close together and a closed mouth, maybe showing some teeth. Then we have the opposite effect.
Put yourself in front of a mirror and practice your expressions.
Take photos if you need to! Then, youll have tons of references for you to use in your drawings. If you prefer, you can even trace on top of your photos, so you can see clearly the differences in proportions and shapes, depending on the expression youre making!

Start off drawing cartoon babies by sketching;a circle for the cranium. Drawing this circle to start off the head should be starting to get much easier and feel more natural by now, and if not, then practice, practice, practice! You can really see how useful being able to draw a sphere in 3D is by now, so make sure that you can draw this really easily!
Keep the shortened proportions for the lower half of the face just like you drew for the front view of the babys face.

Identifying Features Within Guidelines
Different types of facial guidelines are used by artists to depict adult facial proportions. Besides being super simple to set up, I consider the following guidelines more inclusive of diverse faces than some others.
Refer to the drawing of a man’s face in Figure 9 and note how the following guidelines apply:
- Eyebrows are located above line AB.
- Eyes are on line AB. His right eye fits vertically in between lines KL and MN, and his left between OP and QR.
- The lower section of the nose is touching horizontal line CD, and mostly fits into the space between MN and OP. The nostrils are often below CD.
- The base of each cheekbone usually aligns with the bottom section of the nose.
- Ears are between horizontal lines AB and CD. The lower parts of the ears horizontally align with the bottom section of the nose.
- The mouth is generally wider than the nose. The lower lip is on or slightly above line EF.

Watching A Baby’s Face Grow
From birth to age two, the facial mass grows very quickly, and undergoes drastic changes.
The first drawing in Figure 5 is of my daughter, Heidi when she was an infant. During the first year, the lower half of her face grew to accommodate a few teeth . By two , her jaw had further developed, and her face had grown accordingly.
As a child matures from a baby to an adult, the overall length of his or her head grows approximately three inches. The facial mass continues to grow more than the cranial mass.
Compare an infant’s head to an adult’s to identify the changes in proportions that occur as a human head grows.
Next Draw In The Final Details
Your adorable baby drawing is almost complete! Before we move on to color in your drawing, we shall add some final details.
Some lines on the chest, legs and arms will help to add a bit of definition to your baby, and will highlight aspects like the chest and belly button.
Once you have these details drawn, you could also come up with some extra fun details! For example, you could draw some props for your baby, such as a bottle or maybe a cute teddy bear.
If youre feeling extra creative, you could draw in a fun background or maybe a cute outfit for the baby to wear.

Plate 55 Studies Of Babies
The magazines are full of baby pictures, and these are best to practice from, since no baby will hold still long enough for anyone who is not thoroughly familiar with baby proportions to draw from life. The best one can do is to make fast sketches. For this reason finished pictures of babies are usually drawn from photographs, as are the ones on this page.
Plate 57 Some More Studies Of Babies
Remember to keep the bridge of the nose low and concave and the two little round nostrils rather widely spaced. Let the upper lip protrude when the baby is not smiling. Set the ears fairly low, and the chin round and well under. Keep the cheeks high and full. You will usually want to add light tone with a highlight.

How To Draw A Baby Face
In this drawing guide, we will tell you how to draw a baby face. As you know, the face of a small child has many differences from that of an adult.
If you are great at drawing portraits of adults, you cannot immediately create a perfect portrait of a child without training. Therefore, we have created this guide that will allow an artist of any level to practice the skills of drawing children.
Comparing The Face And Head
Drawing the size of the face, proportionate to the mass of the skull, is the key to correctly rendering portraits of babies and young children. Even their features fit on their tiny faces in predictable positions.
Compare the face to skull ratio of a baby and an adult . A baby’s face is only one-third the size of his or her skull, but an adult’s is half the size.
In Figure 1, lines visually separate a baby’s head into sections . Excluding the neck, the head is divided into four and a half segments.
The tiny face takes up only one section and the cranial mass takes up all the rest of the head. Accordingly, the skull is more than three times bigger than the face.
In Figure 2, an adult head is divided into three pieces . The face is one piece, and the cranial mass is two. Hence, the adult’s cranial mass is twice the size of his facial mass.

Infants’ Tiny Heads And Faces
Artworks of young children really should look like children – not mini adults. Many artists struggle to get a baby or child to look young enough.
Guidelines used for drawing babies and young children are quite different than those for older children and adults.
A baby’s face is proportionately much smaller than that of an adult, especially when compared to the size of their skull .

Many people think that this is difficult to learn how to draw a face , but in fact, it is not. If you follow the most basic tips that I have outlined in this article, you will learn to draw a face easily and quickly.
How to Draw a Face for Beginners
The very first step will begin with the simplest geometric shape a usual oval, which is the base of the face.
Draw a vertical and horizontal line that should intersect right in the middle of the oval.
On the horizontal line draw eyes in the shape of almonds with circular pupils inside them.
The eyebrows are usually the same size as the eyes, or slightly wider. Draw them using two thick lines.
The tip of the nose is usually located directly between the line of the eyes and the line of the chin.
Note that the distance between the mouth, nose, and chin is almost the same.
When erasing the guidelines from the face, try not to touch the important lines of the drawing.
The upper tip of the ears is straight with the eyebrows, and the lower edge is even with the tip of the nose.
We decided to choose a fairly classic hairstyle. You can repeat the outlines of the hair from our example or choose any other hairstyle.

Now Add Another Arm For Your Baby
We will be using a similar approach for step 3 of this guide on how to draw a baby. This arm will be on the other side, but it will look quite similar to the previous one.
The main difference with this arm is that the hand will look a little bit different from the other one, as it is at a different angle.

Plate 52 Proportions Of The Baby Head Second And Third Years
When drawing babies and children it seems easier to maintain four divisions than to use the three divisions of an adult face. While the actual head is much smaller, the spaces between the features are proportionately wider. The eyes are wider apart; the upper lip is longer; the space from eye to ear appears very wide. You have to struggle with these proportions in order to make a baby look like a baby and not like a little old bald man. The baby mouth is more pursed when relaxed. The upper lip rises sharply to its peak and usually protrudes. The chin is small and well under, with often a little fat under it. Babies ears vary a great deal, some being quite small and others quite large. They are usually rounder and appear thicker in comparison to the face. Babies brows are usually light and thin or even quite transparent. They are usually much more evident in darkhaired children. The nose is usually small and upturned, and quite rounded. The bridge of the nose is fairly round since it has not had time to develop. The cheeks are extended and full.
Sizing Up Tiny Facial Proportions
When compared to an adult’s head, a baby’s head is usually wider and their chins are shorter and more rounded.
In Figure 3, four horizontal lines identify how babies’ features generally fit on their faces. Note the locations of this baby’s features in relation to the following generic guidelines:
- The eyebrows are on or slightly above line AB.
- The tops of the ears and eyes are touching or slightly below line AB.
- The nose and the bottoms of the ears are touching or slightly above line CD.
- The opening of the mouth is in between lines CD and EF.
- The lower edge of the jawbone is identified by line GH. The bottom of the chin isn’t a reliable point for measurement because most babies have chubby chins or even double chins.
Vertical guidelines are also helpful for accurately drawing a baby’s facial proportions .
In Figure 4, four lines identify the horizontal placements of the features on a baby’s face. Note the placement of the babies’ features relative to six vertical lines:
- Lines IJ and ST identify the widest points on a baby’s head.
- The eyes are located inside the spaces between lines KL and MN, and OP and QR.
- Most of the nose and mouth fit in the spaces between lines MN and OP.
- The distance between a baby’s eyes is slightly more than the space between lines MN and OP.

Now Draw A Face For Your Baby
In this step of our tutorial on how to draw a baby, we shall add a cute face for your baby. Babies have big, round eyes, so we will use very rounded shapes for the face of your baby drawing.
You could replicate the eyes as they appear in our reference image, but if you wanted a less realistic image, you could also use much simpler shapes for the eyes.
Then, use some small, curved lines for a little nose and mouth for the baby. You could also draw these in a much simpler style if you would prefer that kind of look for your drawing.
