Adding Bark Details To Your Tree Trunk

How To Draw A Tree: Narrated step by step

In this step, we are beginning to add the first bits of final detail to our trees. We are starting with the trunk because we have already outlined it. The bark details you add to your trunk are going to be unique, much like a fingerprint. Begin by drawing several dark curved lines within the trunk of your tree. These lines and oval shapes can change from thick to thin, flowing towards both ends of the trunk.

Now, you can use thinner lines to draw abstract curves and ovals in and around the darker lines you have just drawn. The exact pattern is up for individual artistic expression. These curved lines should follow the primary curve of the tree trunk, and you can also make them appear to wrap around the curves of the tree trunk. Continue to draw these lines, until you are happy with your bark and it looks a little something like the image below.

Tip: Do not be afraid to extend these details above the horizontal baseline, as these details will ultimately bleed into the leaves and branches within the arc.

The Importance Of Texture

When it comes to drawing trees, texture will play a crucial role. We will need to mimic the observed texture of the leaves of the tree, without drawing every single leaf. So, our goal is to create – you guessed it – an illusion.

This illusion is created by relationships of value. The positioning of the dark and light tones will not only give form to our tree, but also create the illusion of groupings of leaves. It is the contrast between the darks and the lights that will translate as individual leaves to our viewers.

Dark values will exist in shadowed areas, while light values will exist in areas that are receiving light.

Finish The Top Of The Tree

With a 4B pencil, begin to shade some of the darker shadow areas. Look for the round shapes from earlier and put additional shading over some of the tones previously applied with the 2B pencil. Keep most of these darker shadow areas away from the lighter areas of the same shape. However, you can still put the dark shadow of one leaf collection shape against the lighter leaves of a different collection. Doing this will create some contrast that will help to distinguish the various patches from one another, ultimately leading to a more pleasing end result.

Keep working in the same manner. Continue to look for the different collections of leaves and put shading on and between each one. Use the same short, abstract markings from earlier to create a leafy texture. Keep in mind that the sunlight is coming from the upper right, so you should emphasize the shadows in the lower left area of each group of leaves.

Begin to draw some branches showing through some of the openings on the top area of the tree. Be aware of the path the branches are likely taking from the main trunk of the tree. Although these tinier branches are mostly hidden behind the leaves, they still have an important role in the structure of the tree. Therefore, you should draw branches that reflect that structure.

    Finalizing The Shadows And Highlights

Start this final step by adding another layer of light shading with an even lighter shade of grey. Add this shading to the same areas that you did for the previous step. This final layer of shading helps to diffuse the harsher shadow from the previous step and make it look more natural. Next, you can take a white shade of your paint or pencils, and add a highlight to the top of each of the bunches of leaves. Make sure that this highlight is well blended into the green color for the most realistic effect.

Outlining The Shape Of Your Branches

How to Draw a Large Tree With Branches

In this step, use the construction lines we drew in the previous step to help you with the tree branch drawing process. Begin at the bottom of the tree, drawing a single line with spikes and curves that roughly traces the bottom of the triangle. The easiest way to get the texture of these branches right is to draw abstract W shapes that are joined together around the outline. These W spikes should always flow outwards from the center of the tree, never inwards.

Tip: Remember to trace around the branch construction lines, leaving an even amount of space on either side.

Constructing The Arching Shape Of Your Tree

In this step, you are going to use the horizontal baseline you just drew to create an overarching shape for your tree. Using the main trunk construction line as the central point, draw an incomplete circle. This incomplete circle should begin on one end of the horizontal baseline and finish on the other. This arching shape will help you to get the right overall shape for your tree, and we will use this to place leaves and branches in the following steps.

Tip: This incomplete circle is not a halfmoon shape. Rather, you can imagine that the circle would completely encompass the entire main trunk construction line, but you are simply going to stop drawing it at the horizontal baseline.

Divide And Begin Shading The Lower Part Of The Crown

How to Draw a Big Tree Tutorial – Easy Pencil Drawing

The next phase of drawing our leafy tree is to complete the lower portion of the crown. We will do this in the same manner as we did with the top and the sides. However, before doing so, it might be necessary to soften the edges of the trunk hidden behind the leaves. In the image below, youll notice that Im still keeping the top of the trunk and a primary branch untouched. I want this opening to remain visible.

Once that is done, begin to lightly draw the cluster outlines with an HB pencil. Make them similar in size, but vary the shape occasionally. These can be irregular in shape as well as oval-shaped. Use your reference as a guide.

Draw the cluster shapes until they fill the lower crown area.

After that, use a 2B pencil to begin applying the initial patches of shading to each cluster. Stay consistent with the process and focus on shading the areas farthest away from the light source.

Okay, here Im taking a brief pause with shading the clusters. On the reference photo, I see a large branch arm extending to the outer edges of the tree. Since this is a rather thick branch that is clearly visible in the foreground, Im taking a moment to sketch it out.

This cluster is a bit different from most of the others drawn up to this point. Since the branch is not hidden behind the leaves, I dont need to sketch the leaves first and the branches last. Now that the framework of the branch is drawn, I can sketch the leaves attached directly to the branch.

    Finish Drawing The Grass

Before we fill in the shadow from the tree, we need to sketch a few long, narrow oval shapes in this shadow area. These narrow shapes come from the sunlight shining through the various gaps found in between the trees many branches. Im using a 2B pencil for this step.

This shadow will not be one solid black value. Instead, it will have subtle gradations. For this reason, we are going to sketch a light base layer of tones in the shadow area before applying anything much darker. Use the same short, vertical strokes that you used when drawing the first blades of grass. Make sure to shade around the little narrow shapes.

With the same 2B pencil, go over this shadow area a second time using the same methods. Just as we built up the leaves of the tree in layers, its a good idea to draw grass in multiple layers as well. This is especially true in areas that have more shadow and less sunlight.

Now, with a 4B pencil, apply a third layer. This time, focus on the center of the shadow and the portion closest to the trunk. This cast shadow from the trunk will be the darkest part of the shadow. Again, apply your marks in the same manner as before when drawing the other grass.

With an HB pencil, sketch lighter marks to represent the grass in the sunlit areas of the ground. Use one layer to avoid getting it too dark and to keep the value consistent with the sunlit areas of the trees leaves.

Easy How To Draw A Fall Tree Tutorial And Fall Tree Coloring Page

A simple rule of perspective is included in this lesson about how to draw a fall tree. The idea that the farther away objects are from you, the smaller they appear is an easy concept to for many students to understand. Finding projects that illustrate this principle is helpful for students to remember and eventually add to their art on their own.

This fall tree, for instance, is set off to the side so that some colorful leaves can easily fill in the open sky. Students might tend to draw the leaves all the same size, unless you ask them to think about leaves that are blowing closer to them. Making one or two leaves that are much larger than the rest will add some instant depth to their drawing.

Just remind students that the leaves need to be all the same type, or basic shape. Thats the best way for the viewer to be able to understand they are all coming from the same tree, and are not just bigger leaves.

    Creating The Illusion Of Form

Now, we need to create the illusion of form. In order to create this illusion, we’ll need to consider the light source and add darker values in locations of shadow while leaving areas of lighter value in locations of highlight. The key to creating the illusion of form with any subject lies in the locations of value.

For each of the smaller shapes that we drew in the last step, we’ll add darker values in the locations of shadow. These areas of shadow exist mainly on the opposite side from where the light source originates. And like with basic forms, there will be a gradation of value from light to dark, creating locations of midtone. Since these forms are irregular, the locations of shadow and middle values are also irregular.

These values are added and developed through textural marks that resemble the texture of the leaves. Textural marks are more concentrated in locations where the value is darker and more sparse in areas where the value is lighter.

Draw The Guideline For The Shape Of The Palm Tree

How to draw a Money Tree!

The process for creating a palm tree drawing is a bit different than that of other tree sketches. Palm tree trunks typically arent perfectly straight, so instead of starting with vertical lines, youll draw a long, curved line resembling a stretched-out letter S shape.

Tree # : The Bushy Tree:

This tree is more of a bush. All the branches are coming out from the bottom, and growing to about the same size. I start with five main branches.

Make the branches thicker, and add some more small branches.

Even more small branches, making the bush thicker and thicker.

With the side of my pencil I added some shadow to where the leaves are going to be.

I added some more detailed leaves, but they could also be berries, or flowers, or what ever else you would like.

Finish The Right Side Of The Tree

Now, switch to a 4B pencil to put some darker shading on the clusters. This darker shading will be along the edges that are farthest away from the upper left light source. As it so happens, this shading will also be adjacent to the highlighted portion of many of the leaf clusters, creating some nice contrast.

As you continue to apply these darker values, they will work with the lighter values to give depth and volume to this massive collection of leaves on the tree.

Next, begin to draw branches that are visible in some of the open areas between the leaf clusters. Be mindful of how the branches are likely flowing underneath all of those leaves. Draw the base of each thin branch from a position where it is likely to continue or connect from a thicker branch.

The branches that you draw should become thinner and thinner the farther away you get from the trunk. As you approach the outermost leaf clusters, try tapering the outer branches to a fine point.

Tips For Drawing Different Types Of Trees

If you want to go beyond the basic trunk and bush-like foliage, youll want to notice how different trees look and model yours on a specific type of tree. For example, a pine tree will require different crown drawing techniques than an oak tree. An old tree might have deeply defined trunk details and gnarls while a young tree should have a cleaner, less marked trunk. Find inspiration for any type of tree from the reference photos available in Adobe Stock.

No matter what kind of tree you set out to draw, keep these six steps in mind. If your tree isnt looking as good as youd like, dont give up. Use your eraser as needed, but try to draw through each stroke if you can. Your lines may not be perfect, but theyll retain their continuity and energy, which is important when drawing organic shapes.
