Im here to tell you that its quite the opposite. The following images are just a few examples of different nose shapes.

Three different variations of noses

The first nose is more rounded at the tip and the wings with a narrow bridge. The second nose is more angular with flared nostrils and a flat bridge. The last nose is downturned and the nostrils are not visible.

Much folklore surrounds the black cat. Superstition holds that it is bad luck for a black cat to “cross your path.”

In Europe, black cats were once thought to be the companions of witches, and you could be punished for owning one. Other myths held that witches could shape-shift and become black cats.

Interestingly, many cultures hold that black cats are portents of good, rather than bad, fortune.

Black cats are considered good luck in Britain and Japan, and in Scotland, a strange black cat arriving at a home signifies prosperity. In ancient Egypt, black cats were venerated, and harming a black cat was punishable by death.

“Ship’s cats” on sailing vessels kept mice at bay, but having a black ship’s cat was also considered good luck. Sailor’s wives would also keep black cats for luck, hoping it would help their husbands return safely home.

Did you know? Twenty-two different breeds of cats can manifest solid black coats. These cats today make popular pets.

Black cats have also featured in many animated cartoons and as a logo. For example, some “channel 13” television stations, as well as the crew of the Apollo 13 space mission, adopted black cat logos to make sport of the “unlucky” number 13.

Putting It All Together

Now that youve learned how to draw facial features from the eyes to the mouth, its time to put everything together into a portrait. Do not do this project before you have done the proper practice work. Go back and practice all of the facial features first.

And, before moving on, be sure to practice drawing hair.

In this episode of our weekly live Drawing Together series, artist Scott Maier shows how to draw a womans portrait.

Here are some tips for drawing portraits:

  • When you want to draw facial features, start with the eyes. This helps create a connection with the viewer and starts to capture the personality of your subject.
  • When you finish the eyes, move down and finish the nose, then the mouth. This is called the triangle of features.
  • Allow the darkness of the hair to help create the lighter edge of the face. Placing tone behind the face reduces the chance of things looking outlined.
  • When drawing hair, apply your pencil strokes going in the same direction as the hair growth.
  • Always remember the five elements of shading with everything you draw.

How To Draw A Nose In 4 Steps With Photoshop

Learning how to draw a nose is often overlooked simply because we focus on the other facial features. And yet, it’s part of the overall picture that defines your character. Luckily, since it doesn’t do much in terms of giving emotional responses, a nose drawing can be an easy illustration to do.

In society, piercings are a way to change the aesthetics appearance of a nose. In other areas, a nose can be used in a more intimately fashion. For example, ‘puppy love’ is the idea of pressing a nose to another nose and is something we do to show intimate affection.

A nose comes in many different shapes and sizes. Caucasian noses are more defined and are seen as ‘big’ or ‘high’ whereas Asian noses are more flat and round. These differences are one of the few ways that we can define a character.

While there are many variations of a nose when it comes to drawing it in any illustration, the idea of a nose being present is essential to making your character look correct. This is especially true when your character is facing a certain direction. Follow along as we learn how to draw a nose with these concepts in mind.

Basic Nose Side View Drawing

For the side view again be sure to keep the vertical placement of the nose as described earlier and as shown in the above illustration. A common mistake beginners make is misplacing facial features when drawing the same character from different views.

Its hard to have a clear placement guide for the horizontal positioning of the nose in the side view as this can be effected by the face type, nose length and style. Generally however you will want to draw it sticking out past the forehead.

Make the actual shape of the nose somewhat like a vertical check mark with a short bottom curve, a pointy tip and a long upper curve.

Up to this point, the chalk brush tip are great for drawing in the nose topography. However, it still creates jagged lines that makes it hard for the nose to have a smooth shape. To fix this, switch over to a round brush tip with blurry edge.

Using the eyedropper tool, sample the colors around the nose and then use the round brush to gently smoothen out the nose with that color. This will softly get rid of the jagged edges while creating a nice gradient of color around the nose bridge.

Repeat this process to nostrils but on a much smaller level. This is because you do not want to cover the edges of the nostrils as it links into the face. You just need enough pressure to blend in the colors linking the nostrils to the tip of the nose.

For the underside, use a darker tone and softly blend in the topography to create the columella. This part of the nose should be done using a lighter color than the philtrum. It is only when all the soft gradients are done that you can switch back to the chalk brush tip to define the nasal passage opening.

Draw A Vertical Line From The Center Of The Second Circle

Draw a vertical line from the center of the second circle and another line that touches the first circle and connects to around 3 times the diameter of the second circle on the vertical line.

See the below picture.

We have drawn another horizontal line from the right of the first circle down to mark the connection of nose to the lips.

Note: The slanted line from circle 1 to the verticle line does not start exactly from the side of the circle. We can see the tip of the nose a little projected, thats more attractive.

Make A Line Drawing Of The Nose

Begin the actual line drawing of the nose with the outline of its main shape as shown in the above example. This stage will basically outline the main proportions of the nose and its most important details such as the nostrils.

Next add the smaller details of its bends, shapes and surfaces. While at this stage these may make the line drawing look a little odd they will be very useful when shading.

The Basics Of The Nose

How to Draw a Realistic Dog Nose – Colored Pencil Tutorial

For some reason, when it comes to noses, people struggle. Perhaps this is because a nose is an irregular form – it’s not a simple shape like a circle and it’s not quite a triangle either. It’s not as hard to draw realistic noses as one may think. It’s actually rather simple. All it takes is four lines and then the rest is adding value. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that drawing noses is difficult.

Many people have incorrectly learned how to draw a nose. When you learn something incorrectly, it is even harder to learn how to do it correctly. This is true of anything, not just drawing. Many of us have been taught to draw that “L”shape or perhaps the “w” shape with an extra “u” when we draw a nose.

Drawing noses this way is so far from drawing them realistically. If you are going for a cartoon nose, then that may be a good direction to go. But for a realistic nose, you must really observe your subject.

Here’s a look at the finished drawing from the video above…

How To Start A Drawing Of A Bear

Proportions are the key to a realistic drawing of an animal. If the legs are too short or the head too small, even the most elaborate details will not make it look good.

That’s why we should start every drawing with a rough sketch of the proportions before we invest any time in the details. Such a rough sketch can show us the whole silhouette in a simple way, so we can see the mistakes when they still can be fixed.

This rough sketch should be drawn lightly, with subtle lines that can be easily erased. Draw this way until I tell you to change the technique.

Start With Basic Shapes

First, try to establish the very basic anatomical shapes of the nose. At this point, dont think about all the intricacies of the shades and highlights. Just focus on basic shapes: triangles, trapezoids and circles.

If you’re painting, it’s helpful to start by tinting your canvas with burnt umber thinned with odourless thinner this will help you judge the values of the painting better. Then use a small brush to add in your basic shapes.

The Key Is Observation

You must closely observe your subject when you draw anything. Drawing noses realistically involves studying the values. The values are what gives us the impression and illusion of the form. Make sure that you include a full range of value when you draw a nose.

Drawing lines will help to establish the shape of the nose, but it’s the values that will lead to the illusion of form that you probably want in you drawing.

Your drawing must include the darkest shades and the lightest tints and the grays in between. Keep in mind that no two noses will be the same. Observation is really the biggest secret when it comes to drawing.

Try to pinpoint the locations on the nose where these values are located and notice the subtle changes that happen in the highlights , midtones , and the shadows .

Remove Your Guidelines And Add A Few Shades

How To Paint A Face: Drawing Nose

Our cat drawing is almost finished so its a good time to carefully remove the guidlines and add a few shaded. You can choose how you add shades, but the most easy way to do it is to imagine a light source shining from a certain direction on our cat. Assuming the light source is above, we get the result below.

Drawing Anime And Manga Noses

If you would like more information on how to position the nose on the head you can check the How to Draw an Anime Girls Head and Face tutorial.

Some defining feature of anime and manga noses are that they tend to be small and pointy with details like the nostrils often not drawn at all. Of course there are also quite a few variation to the style some of which are shown above.

For this tutorial we will split the noses into tree main types:

  • Basic nose drawn with just lines
  • Nose defined with a shadow
  • Semi-realistic nose

Drawing A Nose From The Side View

There’s more than one way to draw a nose. In fact, since every nose is different, there are virtually unlimited ways to draw a nose. Next, we’ll take a look at drawing a nose from a side view. This is usually referred to as a profile view.

As we did with the frontal view, we’ll first locate basic shapes. When drawing a nose from this angle, it may be difficult to identify the planes, so basic shapes will suffice.

Look for changes in spacial direction to find the most basic shapes. As we see below, the upper portion of the nose can be simplified with two shapes. The lower portion of the nose is simplified into an organic shape that extends downward from the top two shapes.

We’ll draw these basic shapes first to define the form of the nose.

Next, we can draw the perceived lines that we discussed before along with the outer contours. After these lines are in place, we can begin the process of developing the value and texture.

As we develop the value range, we’ll consider the light source. As we see in this example, the light source originates from the left. This creates shapes of different tones on the nose. The bridge of the nose receives the most light. The cheeks are also receiving a fair amount of light. Curiously, the bottom of one of the nostrils is also lighter. This is the result of light reflecting back up from below, producing an area of reflected highlight.

Basic Nose Front View Drawing

For the front view of the most basic nose you can simply draw it as a dot or a dash. Depending on how simplistic you want the style to be you can even not draw the nose when showing the head from the front.

A good guideline for placing the nose is to first vertically and horizontally divide the head in half. For the vertical positioning draw this type of nose directly in the middle of the head. For the horizontal position draw it between the horizontal halfway point and the chin.

You can place the nose slightly higher or lower based on style and the type of character you want to create but generally try and keep it close to the area described above. This will be discussed in a little more detail later on in the tutorial.
