Draw The Back/top Of The Hair

How to Draw a black Girl Step by Step

Draw the back/top section also split down the middle. The hair should first stick slightly farther up from the head towards its very top, then get a little closer towards it near the upper end of the sides of the head. Finally it should again curve away from the head towards the middle/bottom of the head.

After you finish drawing the hair you can erase the parts of the head/and ears that are covered by it.

In case you are wondering why you needed to fully draw out the head and ears and not just start with the hair there are several reasons for this. One is that seeing the exact size of the head makes it easier to place the facial features . Another is that drawing in such a way helps to avoid many potential mistakes.

For a list of common mistakes when drawing in the anime style and drawing in general see:

Space The Eyes Horizontally & Draw Their Basic Outlines

When spacing the eyes horizontally you will want to leave about enough room between them that you can fit in another eye.

When actually drawing the eyes make them fairly narrow with relatively thick sets of top eyelashes.

At this stage you can simply outline the basic shape of the eyes without drawing all of the smaller details such as the eyelashes.

The goal is to first correctly place all the facial features.

Draw The Sides Of The Hair

After placing all of the facial features you can move on to drawing the hair.

To emphasize that the character is beautiful we will give her a fairly neat hair style.

When drawing the hair you can think of it as being split into the sides, front and back/top sections. For a more detailed explanation of this as well as examples of other hair styles see:

Begin by drawing the sides part of the hair. In this case these will be two fairly long clumps that begin from around the top of the head and end with a pair of splits slightly below the shoulders.

Make these slightly curved as though they are hugging the head/face and also make them slightly wider towards the bottom.

If You Have No One In Your Corner You Get Weeded Out

Almost every woman I interviewed touched on the idea of needing to find sponsorship in the workplace the idea of finding someone at your company who can advocate for raises, projects, and promotions on your behalf. One woman who works as a consultant put it like this: Sponsorship is very important. The black community where I work we have a hard time finding that. Its not a formal program but its part of the review process. People ask who was in this persons corner? You need sponsors to get projects. Staffing is really anxiety-driven. You interview for every project. If you have a sponsor you might not need to interview. If you have no one in your corner you get weeded out.

Black women often find sponsorship challenging in their organizations if they have trouble relating to those whom they work with. Because of this, they may often attribute their lack of advancement in the company to a lack of sponsorship.

You cant be what you cant see. These are the famous words by Marian Wright Edelman and they are as much true for children dreaming of becoming rocket scientists or astronauts as they are for black women climbing the corporate ladder.

For black women its not just a pipeline issue. Once they are in the door, they need to feel supported in ways that are specific to being a woman of color. So that even if they are alone on their team, they will realize theyre not alone at all.

Female And Male Facial Differences

How to Draw a Black Girl / Woman with Afro Easy Step by Step Drawing Tutorial for Beginners

Because the cartoon style simplifies facial features, the difference between females and males can get blurry. That’s why feminine features get exaggerated:

  • The eyes are big, round, and low in the face.
  • The nose is small and not too visible.
  • The eyebrows are thin and high.
  • The lips are big.
  • The neck is thin.
  • The face is oval.

This is a general recipe for a cartoon female. However, it’s not necessary to stick to all these elements. On the contrary, drawing every female this way will inevitably lead to the same-face syndromea popular issue where every character looks like the same one, just in different clothes and with different hairstyles.

The easiest way to solve it is to mix the feminine features with masculine onesafter all, that’s how it works in the real world. Some facial features are called feminine not because they only appear in females, but because that’s what’s traditionally associated with females. Different cultures may have different ideas of feminine facial features, so you’re not doing anything wrong by adding masculine lips to a female character.

Eyes And Nose Guidelines

This step is very important. Firstly you draw an ellipse covering the very bottom of the top circle. The nose in the African models is wider compared to Caucasians. Make sure the shape of the ellipse reflects that.Next draw two ellipses for the eyes. Notice how uplifted and wide-set the eyes are. African faces tend to have eyes that are wider set. Leave enough space from the outer corner of the eye to the face guideline!

The Lower Eyelid And The Pupil

The lower eyelid describes a slightly flatter arc than the upper one. It does not start directly at the end point of the upper eyelid. The upper eyelid goes a little further outward. In addition, the lower eyelid can curve slightly upwards on both the outside and inside. In a laughing person, this outer curvature is particularly pronounced because the laugh muscles push the outer edges of the eyes upwards.

Depending on how important this facial characteristic is to us, we can draw this line several times.

Place the pupil so it lies against the upper eyelid. This creates the effect of the eye looking directly at us.

How To Draw A Female Face In 8 Steps

Another highly requested tutorial fresh out of the oven! This one is, again based off my original method, but with a few small changes here and there to create a female face with soft features. Ill explain the differences in each step as we go along.

Note: Remember to use an HB pencil with light pressure for all steps so you can easily erase your guidelines in the end. I used a lot of pressure in the examples so you can clearly see what Im doing.

I know there are a lot of measurements in this tutorial, but I think its very important, especially if youre a beginner. Once you understand proportions you can try this tutorial again without the ruler method.

Position & Draw The Ears

Drawing: How to draw easy a Black GIRL step by step

Position the ears with their tops slightly below the top of the eyes and their bottoms slightly below the bottom of the nose. For this particular character the ears will be drawn slightly smaller and slightly lower down than is recommended for other character types here on AnimeOutline.

For the other placement example as well as more information on drawing ears see:

In this case most of the ears will be covered by the hair so there is not much need for drawing their inner details.

Draw The Center Guide Line & The Top Of The Head

Star by drawing a vertical line through the middle of your drawing area. In this case it will be tall enough to accommodate the height of the head, neck, and the top part of the shoulders.

The purpose of this line is to act as a guide that helps make sure that both halves of the head/neck/shoulders are of relatively even width. Later it can also help with spacing and positioning the facial features.

At the top of this line draw a circle that will represent the top of the head.

Your Work Is Judged Plus Other Intangible Things

A lot of women told me that they code-switched, which involves embracing the dominant culture or vernacular among certain groups and switching to a more authentic self when around friends and family.

One woman I spoke with, a successful entrepreneur who was interning at a tech startup before going to business school, excitedly described her most recent position where, for the first time in her career, she reported to a black woman. She said she, performed better and was a lot more comfortable and confident. She described what it might have been like if she had to code-switch instead: Being judged on your work versus mentally performing well would have been more taxing. Your work is judged plus other intangible things. You second-guess yourself and that affects your confidence.

She wasnt the only woman to mention the mental strain associated with trying to live up to a professional ideal originally created to stifle, rather than support, diversity. Another woman passed on an opportunity for a full-time position at the Obama White House because she felt inhibited by stereotypes. I was given opportunities to stay at the White House but I didnt because I felt like people were very judgmental of my race, and my gender, and everything. My ideas werent getting traction that I feel like others from white guys were.

Add The Small Details

How to Draw African Girl Face , How to Draw a black Girl Step by Step

After you finish drawing the outlines of the hair and placing all of the facial features you can then draw all of the small details.

In this case those will be:

  • Inner details of the eyes
  • Hair folds

While the eyes in that example are slightly different all of the drawing steps can be applied to the example in this tutorial.

You can see a basic step by step drawing of the details of the eyes above. Also please note that the irises are shaded grey just to make the highlights in the final drawing a bit easier to see. If you are going to be coloring the eyes you may wish to make them a different color.

When done with the eyes you can add a few extra hair folds as shown in the first example.

Finally you can also add a little beauty mark/mole just slightly below one of the eyes . This will again help emphasize that the girl is beautiful as some famous models have these.

You can see a slightly larger version of the face above to make it a little bit easier to see.

How To Draw Breasts

Breasts are often drawn as simple spheres stuck to the chest, but it’s not a requirement of a cartoon exaggeration. You can draw realistic breasts in a cartoon way! You just have to understand how they work.

Imagine breasts as water balloons attached to the chest with skin. They change shape because of gravity, and they may hang lower when the skin gets weaker .

When drawing the breasts in any view, it’s good to draw them as ovals, slightly heavier at the bottom. Keep in mind that they’re not separate from the rest of the bodythey’re attached to the breast muscle, which goes under the armpit.

Breasts come in many shapes and sizes, but there’s one rule: the bigger the breasts, the lower they hang and the less circular they look. Breasts appear circular and close to each other only in two cases: in some types of implants , and in a push-up/sports bra .

Drawing The Hair Details

To add detail to hair draw in some lines flowing from the parting line down along the shape of the hair. Add in some other lines that still follow the general direction of the hair in various places along the overall shape of the hair. Try and vary these in their length and distance from one another.

After you finish the hair the tutorial is pretty much but if you want to add some eyelashes you can follow the step below.

For more on drawing female hair see:

Shade & Finish The Drawing

For some very basic shading you can add shadows in the most common places. In this case they will be as follows:

  • Tiny shadows around the eyelids
  • Small shadows below the eyelashes
  • Very tiny shadow to one side of the nose
  • Fully shaded ears
  • Large shadow on the neck in the shape o the chin
  • Fully shaded inner part of the hair between the head/neck and the side hair

As mentioned earlier you can also add some hair highlights as sort of white zigzag lines across the hair. As suggested earlier you can simply leave this area white and then color around it. Alternatively you can use a white correction pen to add them in over top or do it digitally.

We Are Tied To Other People Of Color

Each interview revealed just how much these womens experiences at work are viewed through a larger filter of race and class.

I can go into my office right now and meet five people, out of that, four will be white, described one woman I spoke with. Out of those white, their whole family might be of generational wealth. That one black person they can more than likely identify someone in their family who is living in the projects, living in poverty or doesnt have education beyond high school level. That is the experience of black people in general that we are tied to other people of color who are in poor situations.

This isnt to say that every white person in corporate America comes from generational wealth. It is to say that its impossible to divorce current statistics about race in this country from black women who have to go to work every day. Black women in corporate America arent immune to the realities facing black people in general or the historical relationship between race and resource access in this nation. Instead, theyre forced to put that aside when they sit down at their desk.

This forced separation between hardships facing the black community and the institutional whiteness of the white-collar job can be mentally taxing and make it harder to perform well at work.
