How To Draw A Book: Outline An Open Book Step By Step
Step 1: Draw the bottom book cover
Let’s start outlining our book by doubling up on the book cover. Draw two lines that follow the bottom sketched double-hop around the spine oval.
Step 2: Draw the book pages
Next, outline the pages – the two lines for the outer edges and the centerline, as well as the bottom curved edges and the rest of the bookbinding oval.
We have left out the top edge for a reason – there is an important detail coming up next.
Step 3: Draw the bookmark
Many proper hardcover books feature an integrated bookmark sewn into the spine – just a simple piece of ribbon. That is what we draw next. Draw two squiggly lines for the bookmark and add a split end .
Now you can outline the top edge of the page – leaving out the small part covered by the bookmark!
Also, to complete the book drawing, draw the two wavy fuzzy curves for the bottom page edges.
Step 4: Add the final book details
The final details that perfect our book drawing are to suggest some text onto our pages – do not forget to bend the text lines similar to the page edges. And last but not least – draw some very light lines to suggest the individual pages inside the bottom page block.
How To Draw Books Standing
This is the easiest way to doodle books and its probably the most popular one. These will look great in your book tracker!
Start from drawing several vertical lines, they will be your book spines later. Be sure they are of different height and maybe, have a bit of a different distance between each other. This will make each book stand up a bit more.
Next add curved lines to the top and to the bottom of your lines.
Finally, add some decorative elements to your spines add dots, lines, circles, rectangles. Let your imagination flow.
How To Draw What You See
Lastly we get to an older book that was first published in the early 1970s. It has since been reprinted and amended with more info and more up-to-date writing.
How to Draw What You See is one of the top books to help you see objects properly and capture them accurately. It spans just over 170 pages and the writing is exceptionally detailed. Youll learn about forms, shading, and perspective through a series of realistic drawing exercises.
Id define this book to be helpful but incredibly simple. Its really made for novice artists who have never drawn from life and have no idea where to start. The reason its so low on my list is that it doesnt just cover drawing, but also gets into charcoal and watercolor too. This isnt necessarily bad but its not great for beginners.
If you just want to master drawing then you will not want any other mixed media. This book covers drawing for the first 18-20 chapters then quickly switches mediums.
If you want a singular book on drawing then Id instead recommend the first 2-3 books at the top of this list.
However I wouldnt say this book is bad or incorrect in how it teaches drawing. Just that it goes far beyond mere drawing, and this can be off-putting to some artists who just want to master a pencil.
Everyone dives into drawing from different stages and its tough to recommend one single book for every person. But the titles in this list are all fantastic, some covering more specific topics while others are more broad and generic.

Now Your Book Needs Some Color
You set out to learn how to draw a book when you started this guide, and now you can see that you succeeded! Before your book drawing is complete, it needs some beautiful colors to be complete!
Weve shown you how we colored in this book drawing, but this is a step where you can show off how creative you are!
In the previous step, I put out the idea of drawing in the cover of your favorite book onto the cover of your book drawing.
If you do go with that idea, you could look at the cover of the book in real life and then replicate the colors of the cover onto the cover of your book drawing.
Once youve decided on the colors for your book drawing, you can also have a great time experimenting with different art mediums.
I would use some watercolors if I were coloring this in, as the softer colors would make it look like an old, faded book. What color mediums and details will you choose to finish off your book drawing.
Learn How To Draw A Book With An Easy Step By Step Tutorial And Then Add Your Own Words On The Cover
Sooner or later, there may come a time when students need to know how to draw a book. It could be to go with a book report, or for a school book drive, or some decorations for the library.
If that is the case, then why not have them draw a book that looks really substantial, with a fancy hard cover? It only takes a few extra steps to have the pages set in a bit for a big and heavy look. The finished book is so much prettier than just a rectangle with straight sides, like you would see for your average paperback.
Adding a title to the cover is also a good chance to practice some lettering skills. To make the letters look like they are laying flat on the cover, they need to run parallel to the edges of the book. Making a very light guide line first, as shown in step 6, will really help students plan out their letters before they trace them.

And here is the coloured in version. We have gone for a red bookmark, with the yellowish-beige pages of an old book. There is a bit of brown for the cover, and a touch of light blue to mark out the individual pages.
You Can Refer To The Simple Step
Start as you do an actual book with the first page. Draw three curves to outline part of the wavy rectangle. Note that the top and bottom lines of the page are nearly parallel, and that the edges of the page are nearly straight.
Draw a line from the bottom of the page to the top of the page, outlining the spine or the spine. Then let the line continue to form the next header. Use two more curves to completely wrap the page.
Draw more pages below them. Use curves to outline rectangles partially obscured by the first pages. Note the line where two of the pages come together at the back of the page.
Draw a rounded triangle at the base of the spine. In the opposite corners, draw a series of overlapping curves to indicate the page corners. Then, connect the corners and spine with a series of almost straight lines.
Extend short lines from the spine and connect them with a curve. Then, draw lines that are almost parallel to the final line, connecting the corners to the spine. This outlines the cover of the book.
Detail of page edges. Draw curves from spine to corner. Use two curves, connected to a V shaped line, to form a marking strip. Delete as needed.
Draw curves of different lengths from spine to corner to give vignettes to the edges of the page.
Draw a series of curves through corners. Then, draw lines of different lengths across the remaining page edges.
