Putting Together The Sketch

In the first step, we will construct the sketch. When doing this, you can follow the basic processes outlined below:

Tip: When drawing the sketch, use an H or HB pencil and never press too hard. This will allow you to erase guide lines and errors later on.

  • At first glance, a bunnys head can seem quite complicated, but if you break down the motif into geometric shapes, you can easily construct your sketch. Breaking the parts down is the best way to learn how to draw a bunny face.
  • To do this, draw an elongated ellipse in the center of your paper to suggest the bunnys face. Next, draw two more ellipses as ears that start in the upper third of the first ellipse and stick out a bit. Use your printed photo as a guide to get the angle of the ears right.
  • Another ellipse marks the cheeks of the bunny.

Tip: Break down your motif into simple basic shapes to learn how to draw a bunny face. This will help you to get the proportions right. This works for every motif!

  • On my sketch, you can also see that the head is divided by a cross in the middle. The horizontal line shows you exactly where the eyes are and the vertical line shows you where the center of the face is. This will help you later when drawing the eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • You can also roughly draw the outline of the body. Follow my sketch.

How To Make A Black Bunny Drawing

Illustrator Nashwa Mahmoud shows one way to draw a black bunny.

Anyone whos ever tried to draw a black animal knows that it can be difficult to add in details and dimension. One option is to draw the bunnys features, then use a pencil to incorporate shading techniques all around those features. Youll get the black, monochromatic look without having to add details on top of an all-black drawing.

Time For Some Light Shading

Shading is an integral part of any sketch because it helps to create dimension and depth. The exact areas that you will shade depend entirely on the reference photograph you are using. It is best to use a 2B or HB pencil for this first round of light shading, and remember not to make things too dark just yet.

  • For this first shading step, you want to locate the dark and medium shadow areas in the reference photo. In sketching, we use shading to emphasize shadow and dimension, so it can help to determine if and where the light source in your composition is.
  • In our composition, we added this first round of light shading to the inner and outer edges of the rabbits ears, with more emphasis on the inner portion. We also add a little down the bridge of the bunnys nose just over the eyes. We also added light shading on the cheeks behind the nose.
  • Even in this first stage of shading, you must make sure that you shade in the right direction. You can add a lot of shape and dimension to a sketch by shading with the direction of the differently shaped components. In terms of this simple bunny drawing, make sure that your nose shading follows the shape of the nose. Another important place for you to consider the direction of your shading is on the bunnys cheeks. You want to shade outwards and downwards.
  • Be careful not to get too trigger happy with this initial shading. If there are very light areas on your photograph, leave them blank on your paper.

Sketching Out Your Rabbit Drawing

How to Draw a Cartoon Bunny Rabbit Easy

The first step is learning how to draw a bunny face. Although you will end up erasing much of this initial sketch, it is an essential first step in learning how to draw a rabbit. Our first tip is to use an HB or H pencil when outlining this initial sketch and to try not to press hard. You want to be able to erase these guiding lines completely.

The best way to capture the right proportions in any animal drawing is to break it down into simple shapes. When learning how to draw a bunny face, the best shapes to use are ellipses.

  • Begin with a single, fairly large, and elongated ellipse in the center of your page. This first shape is the main body of your rabbits head.
  • Draw a curving cross within this main ellipse. Ideally, you want the center verticle line to bulge in the same direction that the rabbits head is facing in your composition, and you want the horizontal line to bulge downwards. This cross helps you place the facial features on your bunny.
  • For the ears, you are going to draw the next two elongated ellipses that meet in the top third of the face. It can be helpful to look at your reference photograph to help you get the right angle in the ears.
  • To mark out the chubby bunny cheeks, you can draw another slightly fatter and horizontal ellipse. This ellipse should fit between the bottom of your main face shape and the horizontal cross-section.

How To Make A Cartoon Bunny Drawing

Skillshare instructor and illustrator Maria Avramova demonstrates how facial expressions can create funny or comedic bunny drawings.

Illustrator and Skillshare instructor relies on facial expressions to draw funny bunny cartoons. She says you can take a general bunny face and show expressions with the eyes, eyebrows, and mouth.

To learn how to draw a cartoon bunny, study the features and expressions of your favorite characters. Bugs Bunny, for instance, has a crooked smile, darting eyes, and a big grin on his face. His facial expressions are emotive and are what make him unique.

Snowball, from The Secret Life of Pets, is a highly animated little guy, and his eyebrows are constantly moving around.

According to Avramova, learning how to draw a bunny face is really just mastering their eyes, eyebrows, and mouth. The bunnys entire expression can be expressed through these three features. If youre going for a more realistic bunny, you might skip the eyebrows, but for a cartoon bunny drawing, they can make the entire face.

Fleshing Out Your Sketch

Now that you have the basic anatomic proportions of your rabbit drawing down, it is time to flesh it out. You can use the cross to add beautiful eyes, a little nose, and a fluffy chin to your simple bunny drawing.

  • The eyes should sit just above the horizontal line of the cross. A bunnys eyes are more towards the side of its head, and its nose protrudes in front of them. You can easily capture this difference in depth by drawing a small line from the top of the eyes and curving down and inwards.
  • Your bunnys nose should sit just above the bottom of its face. You can use the vertical line of the facial cross to place the nose correctly. It is shaped a little like a crescent moon. Rabbits noses tend to stick out a little more right at the bottom, and you can capture this shape with two small outwardly curved lines from the base of the chin to in line with the nose.
  • You will notice that the ears of your bunny in the reference photograph are not a smooth ellipse. The ears are a little more narrow at the tip, and about halfway down, they begin to widen. You can carefully alter the shape of your rabbits ears. Finally, add in the line to differentiate between the inside and outside of the ears.
  • The final step in the fleshing out process is to join the outlines of your ellipses together with a smooth line. Once you have created a fleshed-out sketch of your bunny, you can erase the construction lines.

Drawing The Rabbit’s Face

Now I’ve erased the extra parts of the circles that I don’t need for the finished rabbit drawing. Now add the bunny rabbit’s face and eyes. The eyes are on the side of the bunny’s head, so are seen from the front as half-circles. This can make them a little bit tricky to draw, as we tend to think of eyes as round or angled a certain way, to be careful to draw what you really see, not what you think they should look like. To complete the face, draw the rabbit’s nose like a letter Y, adding the soft curves of mouth, chin, and cheeks.

To finish off your rabbit drawing so it looks soft and fluffy, you might want to gently erase some of your outlines so that you can just see them, or lightly trace your drawing onto a fresh sheet of paper. Look at the rabbit reference photo to see how the fur looks, and use a combination of long and short lines along your outlines, to create the effect of soft fluffy rabbit fur. If you want to be able to ‘fill’ your drawing with using graphics software later, you’ll need to draw with a ‘zig-zag’ motion so that you still have a continuous outline.

Where you can see lines or dark areas on the rabbit’s body, you can add some scribbly fluff too. Try short, flick marks. Then finish off by adding long whiskers on face and eyebrows.

Now draw the bunny rabbit’s ears quite straight, narrowing at the top. This rabbit has tall ears, and they are much easier to draw than a lop-eared bunny’s ears are. The main thing here is to look carefully at your photo and remember the shape. Draw lightly so that you can easily correct mistakes without having lines dug into the paper.

Draw curving-in lines for the bunny’s front legs, then add the back leg and tail, copying the shapes I’ve drawn.

A simple start is to look for a couple of big circles in the rabbit’s body and a smaller circle usually with joining parts of circles for the head. Here are the simple shapes I see when looking at this rabbit.

Here’s what the bunny’s basic shapes look like on paper. First, draw a vertical line to help keep your circles straight. Then draw two overlapping circles, one above the other, then a big oval underneath, touching the first circle.

Then draw a bigger oval at an angle. They don’t have to be perfect you can draw them freehand, or use coins or a circle template if you have one. Make your lines very light I draw this dark so you can see them on screen.
