All Cartoon Characters Are Based On Real People

All cartoon heads, regardless of the style of drawing, are based on real people. To turn a real head into a cartoon head you must do two things: Eliminate detail and exaggerate outstanding characteristics. This enables you to express the feelings and personality of the character clearly and sharply. To show you what we mean, we had four cartoonists draw their interpretations of three models. Their drawings, ranging from the realistic to the highly stylized, appear below. Note that each man has created a unique and individual cartoon while expressing the type and personality of the model.

Easy Cartoon Drawing Exercises

Now we will put into practice everything we have learned so far… Below you’ll find a basic cartoon face drawing template where we can practice our drawing skills in different positions:

Let’s mark the eyes in different directions for each one of the circles…

Now, let’s add some random jaws, with different sizes and shapes…

It’s up to you now. There are so many easy cartoon characters to draw. I guess you can walk alone and explore the techniques I gave to you to complete the drawings. Remember that cartoon face drawing has two premises:

  • Simplify the face details in rounded shapes.
  • Exaggerate the facial expressions.

Once you’ve managed to sketch the direction of the eyes and have chosen the proper chins, try to use your creativity to build however many faces you want. You can be sure that, if you practice at least ten minutes per day with the techniques presented here, drawing cartoon faces will be as natural to you as breathing.

Let’s summarize! To reinforce what I said throughout the tutorial, let’s remember the proper steps for how to draw a cartoon face:

  • Make a circle that will represent the skull of our character.
  • Set the direction in which your character will be looking and draw the guidelines.
  • Make the outline of the eyes in an oval shape.
  • Draw the eye pupils . Don’t forget the eyelashes.
  • Choose the correct eyebrow, depending on the age and gender of your character.
  • Draw an appropriate jaw.
  • Draw simplified ears.
  • Celebrate!

Tips for Drawing Yourself As a Character: What could be more fun than making fun of yourself by drawing a ? You could pay a professional to do it, but with a little practice, you could come up with a version on your own. Here are some tips for drawing yourself as a cartoon character.

The best way to start is with a photo. You might feel self-conscious looking at yourself for so long at first, but eventually, you will get used to it. Thats perfect. You need to be able to see yourself from an outsiders perspective.

Pretend youve never seen your face before. Now look at it and find out what your most noticeable feature might be. Perhaps you have squinty eyes or a huge dimple in your chin. You might have an unusual nose or very memorable hair. Or maybe just the shape of your face is noticeable.

Most people have at least one thing that is prominent about their faces. Some people have several obvious features. Those people are a s dream! They are easy to draw a likeness of, and easily recognized as a cartoon.

Take that feature and exaggerate it. If you have big teeth, make your smile take up half of your face. If your hair looks a little wild, make it look even wilder.

To get the proportions correct, see how far down on your face your nose is. Is it halfway down? One third? And then how big, compared to another shape, such as your whole face. Is your nose one fourth the size of your face, or half as tall?

Changing The Shape Of The Balloon

If everyone had his or her hair shaved off, you would see that there is as much variety in the human head as there is in the top of a range of mountains. Human heads come in almost every shape, from a lima bean to a toy top and so do cartoon heads. The round balloon head is only the beginning.Imagine that you are grasping a toy balloon in your hands. Now squeeze it hard. The balloon changes its shape but it still keeps its three dimensions. The same thing must be true of the different-shaped cartoon heads you draw. Regardless of the form, your center line must follow the curve of that form. If it does, you can place the features correctly in relation to the center line and maintain the three-dimensional effect. Changing the shape of the basic balloon head is the key to creating many different cartoon types. As you see here, just a couple of varied shapes can be the start of a whole cast of interesting characters Milquetoasts and mugs, debutantes and dowagers, seadogs and swamis.

      Bonus: How To Create Accessories

Creating a zine or a comic is pretty complex, so why not start with creating small items?

Today, I will explain how to prepare art for acrylic keychains, which are easy to make and look cute with chibi characters!

An acrylic keychain usually requires three separate data, depending on the printing vendor template.

Open the template, and paste these images on separate layers, usually the following:

Then, send the data to the printing vendor.

For the artwork, choose the data you want to use.

At the top, indicate where to place the hole for the keyring chain.

Make sure you dont draw anything over the hole.

The white fill is the base color under the illustration.

Without this white base, the illustration will be printed directly on the transparent acrylic, which makes the colors appear translucent and hard to see.

To print your illustration as you created it, make sure to create a white fill layer.

It is easy to create this data create a duplicate of the illustration layer and fill it with a solid color. The printing vendor will print this layer in white.

Because it sits under the illustration, the shape should be a silhouette of the artwork. If you want certain parts to appear transparent, you can remove the white fill on those parts.

Cut area shows where the acrylic board will be cut.

The layer can be purely black. Fill the area surrounding the illustration in black.

Avoid creating a complex cut border, as the keyring maker may not be able to cut it.

Method 1: Making A Cartoon Of Yourself By Hand

Draw Yourself by LEXYFACEEE on DeviantArt

    • To draw yourself as a cartoon, you a first going to need a general picture or idea of how you would look as a cartoon.  A fun and easy place to start generating some mental images for yourself is online at  At you can see yourself as a cartoon.  Recreate the cartoon image of yourself on a sheet of paper.  To do this: use a simple black outline, add in your facial features, incorporate your specific clothes and hairstyle choice, and then use colors such as pencils crayons, or paintbrushes to color in your image.
    • Now, turn your piece of paper over and draw yourself again as a cartoon.  However, this time, change around your facial features.  For instance, you can make your eyes bigger, work in some crazy hair, or exaggerate some of the features you already have.  Do this by changing around the size and shape of your features.  Then, give your image some color.
    • Take the two drawings that you made and compare them.  Are there any differences that you notice?  Can you tell that one is an imitation that you were copying from the computer, and the other is the image that you have in your mind of yourself.
    • Now that you have an idea of what a cartoon can look like, take out another piece of paper and start writing down ideas for the final draft of the cartoon of yourself.  You might want your cartoon to tell a story, or you might want to draw a cartoon of yourself as a baby.
    • Now, go ahead and add any dialogue or action to your cartoon.
    • How To Draw A Female Character

Let’s try some more easy cartoon drawings. I don’t know… I think Tommy needs a sister! He’s been very lonely out there. Let’s create a sister for him now, as if by magic:

Hey!!! How did you do that so fast? Very simple… Women tend to have more delicate facial structures. Here’s a female cartoon face drawing step-by-step guide:

      • Thin eyebrows
      • Small nose with fewer details
      • Long hair

That’s it. These are all the changes you need to make. Besides that, I took everything I could from Tommy, her brother. After all, they are siblings, right?

When you start to feel more comfortable, you can slowly create some more “realistic” details for your characters. Such as larger pupils…

Varying The Location Of The Features

While the eye line is usually halfway between the top of the head and the chin, interesting cartoon characters of many different types can be created by raising or lowering this line. Even with balloons of the same shape a shift in the eye line can be the start of a new character. Keep in mind, however, that since the features are evenly balanced on each side of the center line, this line serves as a fixed guide for locating them.

The Five Shapes: How To Cartoon Yourself Accurately

At the core of cartoon art is the human face. All but the most detailed cartoons can get by with basic bodies, but in order for a caricature to look good, its face needs to match up with the person its about.

Many people mistakenly believe that the human face is complicated. From wrinkles to cheeks, hairlines to lips, various features can make the face seem more difficult to draw than it really is.

Tom Richmond, one of the cartoonists behind Mad Magazine, breaks the human face down into five simple shapes: the head shape, eye one, eye two, the nose, and finally, the mouth.

Classic portrait artists understood the importance of getting these five shapes right in their paintings. The difference between portraiture and caricature is that portrait artists try to stay within the natural limits of proportion and scale in the face.

Learn more about the techniques used in portrait drawing by enrolling in our expert course, The Secrets to Drawing.

In caricature, proportion and scale is yours to play with. If the relationship between the five shapes of the face is correct, even the most unrealistic scale or proportion is still going to look like the person youre trying to draw.

Before you start drawing cartoons of yourself and your friends, spend some time on the five key shapes that make up the face. Experiment by changing the placement of the nose, eyes, or mouth on the face and see what a dramatic change it can produce.

Hair On The Head And Face

In the simple cartoon head, hair makes the head male or female. When it comes to hair, anything goes from the last precious few of the almost bald gent to the weird result of miladys latest visit to the beauty parlor. Every successful cartoon character has its own distinctive hairdo. Hair is important stuff.

      Drawing The Balloon Head

Draw Yourself In 9 Different Cartoon Styles by pink

Before beginning to draw cartoon heads, you must learn to draw the balloon shape freely and quickly. Never use a compass. To form your balloon, swing the pencil around several times on the paper. The freely drawn balloon will be only a guide for the general shape of the head, so make it light you can strengthen the outline later. Practice drawing balloons about the size shown here, because most of your work as a cartoonist will call for heads this size or smaller. After you have gotten the hang of drawing the balloons and can dash them off easily, you are ready to swing the two guide lines in. Sketch these lines as though they go completely around the balloon. This will give the head a solid, three-dimensional quality and keep you from drawing flat, pancake-type faces. Then start drawing in the eyes, nose, mouth and ears, following the principles demonstrated here.
