Sketching An Easy Cartoon Brain

1Draw a large bean shape to make the outline for the brain. Use a pencil to sketch a kidney bean shape on your paper. You can make the outline for the brain any size you like. To make the kidney bean shape, draw a circle that has an indent at the bottom.XResearch source

If you prefer, you could draw an oval instead, but make the middle noticeably wider than the ends.

Tip: Use pencil while you’re sketching since it’s easy to erase mistakes.

2Make a half-circle from the bottom that curls into the middle of the brain. To highlight a section of the cartoon brain, place your pencil on the bottom line of the outline near the center where it indents. Draw a half-circle that extends from the bottom into the center so it looks like a curlicue.XResearch source

Remember that the brain doesn’t need to look realistic since you’re making a simple cartoon drawing.

3Draw 2 to 3 squiggly lines that connect across the brain. The brain is known for looking wrinkly and some of those wrinkles extend across the entire brain. Make a few wiggly lines that move from the outline to the half-circle you just drew or have them touch the opposite side of the brain.XResearch source

4Sketch lots of small squiggles that don’t connect. These will look like wrinkles once you’ve made them over the entire brain. There’s no need to make them all connect to each other, so make your squiggles different sizes and lengths.XResearch source

Lets take a look at the anatomy of the horse and check the main differences:

The front legs of the horse has a slight difference from other animals: Its curvature resembles a knee, while the cat and dog look more like “elbows”.

Interesting… this means the horse is the only animal that has a different bone structure from other four-legged animals? No. It means that all hoofed animals follow the same pattern, regardless of the size and shape, you will realize that these features remain.

Well.. Not always, right?

The fact is that nature is full of mysteries and curiosities. Anatomy is a very complex subject, especially when it comes to animals. As a designer, I confess that I dont know even half of the muscles which form all animals. But you must understand that your role as an artist isnt to represent real life accurately through your sketches, but use your creativity to convince people than youre willing to show.

Imitating Your Favorite Cartoon

1Find a picture of the character online. It’s easiest to copy a cartoon character if you have something to work with! Look up a detailed picture of your favorite character, and use that to guide your drawing.XResearch source

You can even look up tutorials on how to draw specific characters to make life easier.

2Start with the basic shape in pencil. Sketch in circles, ovals, and rectangles to help get the figure in the correct perspective. Look closely at the face, for instance, to see if it’s more of a circle or oval, then sketch that into place. Maybe the torso is more of an oval shape, so make a light sketch for that. Add rectangles for the limbs, including ovals or circles for the arms.XResearch source

3Add in the hands, ears, and feet. If your character has unusual ears, such as Mickey Mouse’s round ears, sketch those in. Similarly, add in ovals or circles for the hands, depending on what the character’s hands look like.XResearch source

Don’t forget to add shoes or feet!

4Put in guidelines for the face and torso. Add a curving center line for the face, going vertically. The line should curve in the direction the character is facing. If the character is looking straight ahead, it can go straight down the face. Similarly, add a vertical line along the character’s torso, curving the direction the character is turning.XResearch source

For example, some characters will have very skinny arms and legs, while others will have more defined curves.

What Can You Do With Triangles

While squares and circles will be your usual go-to shapes when drawing cartoon people, triangles also have their uses. For instance, they can be simple noses for your characters. This can be done either by sketching a triangle and then erasing one side or by using the entire shape.

Additionally, triangles are effective shapes for creating feet or shoes from a variety of different angles. Try sketching an isosceles triangle and filling it in with details to make it a sneaker or a flat.

1Draw a horizontal oval that juts out along the bottom line. Lightly sketch an oval that’s as large as you want the brain to be. Curve the top of the oval in the middle to make the rounded part of the brain. When you’re drawing the bottom line, make it bump out near the middle. The bump should be about 1/3 the size of the brain’s length.XResearch source

Keep your pencil marks light so you can erase mistakes or go over them with a pen.

Tip: If it’s easier for you, draw a horizontal oval and make a circle that’s about 1/3 of the size of the bottom line. Place the circle on the bottom line of the oval and draw a line connecting the circle to the oval outline. Then, erase the rest of the circle.

2Sketch a narrow curve above the top line of the brain. This will give your drawing a sense of dimension. Place your pencil on one end of the oval and draw a line that curves over the top line. It should be about 1â2 inch above the original outline at its widest point.XResearch source

If you don’t want to give the brain dimension, you can skip this step.

3Make a curve that looks like a C on the bottom bump. Now that you’ve drawn the basic outline for the brain, you’ll start to draw lines that separate the different segments of the brain. Locate the bump you made on the bottom line and draw the base of a C shape so it fits into the bump. Extend the top of the C towards the middle of the brain.XResearch source

For this introduction, we will draw a childs head. This head will serve us as a base for our future explorations on facial expressions.

Keep in mind, the cartoon faces have more exaggerated proportions compare a realistic head.;

We will start drawing a sphere, which will represent the;cranium;and the;face. Under the sphere, we will draw a pointy square. This square will be the;jaw;of our character. Once we have the;head;placed, we will draw;the;neck under;from the base of the head.

We will draw a horizontal line across the sphere. This curve will cross the middle of the sphere, establishing were the;eyebrows;could be placed if we were drawing a realistic head. But, because our character is a kid and the drawing style is a cartoon, the eyes will become huge spheres. As a result of that eyebrows will be placed much higher. We are already starting to bent the natural laws of facial;proportions.

Following this same line, we will draw the;ears;on the side of the sphere. Again, the ears will look like a simplistic and bigger version of the real ones. Then we will divide the whole;head;with another vertical line. Remember our head is in a 3/4 view, so both parts will have different sizes.

When it comes to ears, a dog has an interesting feature that varies according to breed: their ears can fall down, or point up. You have greater freedom to explore the breeds and their characteristics in comparison to cats.

All Cartoon Characters Are Based On Real People

All cartoon heads, regardless of the style of drawing, are based on real people. To turn a real head into a cartoon head you must do two things: Eliminate detail and exaggerate outstanding characteristics.
