Hoofed Animals In Motion
Lets take a look at the anatomy of the horse and check the main differences:
The front legs of the horse has a slight difference from other animals: Its curvature resembles a knee, while the cat and dog look more like “elbows”.
Interesting… this means the horse is the only animal that has a different bone structure from other four-legged animals? No. It means that all hoofed animals follow the same pattern, regardless of the size and shape, you will realize that these features remain.
Well.. Not always, right?
The fact is that nature is full of mysteries and curiosities. Anatomy is a very complex subject, especially when it comes to animals. As a designer, I confess that I dont know even half of the muscles which form all animals. But you must understand that your role as an artist isnt to represent real life accurately through your sketches, but use your creativity to convince people than youre willing to show.
In fact, anatomy isnt that hard. You only need to unlock its secrets…

What Can You Do With Triangles
While squares and circles will be your usual go-to shapes when drawing cartoon people, triangles also have their uses. For instance, they can be simple noses for your characters. This can be done either by sketching a triangle and then erasing one side or by using the entire shape.
Additionally, triangles are effective shapes for creating feet or shoes from a variety of different angles. Try sketching an isosceles triangle and filling it in with details to make it a sneaker or a flat.
Drawing A Realistic Brain
Tip: If it’s easier for you, draw a horizontal oval and make a circle that’s about 1/3 of the size of the bottom line. Place the circle on the bottom line of the oval and draw a line connecting the circle to the oval outline. Then, erase the rest of the circle.

How To Draw The Basic Cartoon Face:
This is a quick;exposition of the basics on how to draw a human head. The final objective of this tutorial is to give you the tools you need in order to achieve convincing facial expressions for your cartoon characters.
For this introduction, we will draw a childs head. This head will serve us as a base for our future explorations on facial expressions.
Keep in mind, the cartoon faces have more exaggerated proportions compare a realistic head.;
We will start drawing a sphere, which will represent the;cranium;and the;face. Under the sphere, we will draw a pointy square. This square will be the;jaw;of our character. Once we have the;head;placed, we will draw;the;neck under;from the base of the head.
We will draw a horizontal line across the sphere. This curve will cross the middle of the sphere, establishing were the;eyebrows;could be placed if we were drawing a realistic head. But, because our character is a kid and the drawing style is a cartoon, the eyes will become huge spheres. As a result of that eyebrows will be placed much higher. We are already starting to bent the natural laws of facial;proportions.
Following this same line, we will draw the;ears;on the side of the sphere. Again, the ears will look like a simplistic and bigger version of the real ones. Then we will divide the whole;head;with another vertical line. Remember our head is in a 3/4 view, so both parts will have different sizes.
Hail To Differences Between Animals
Weve talked about cats but we forgot someone who is also very important in a childs life…
As the dog and the cat are, probably, the animals you will draw more in your life, lets make a comparison of the main differences between them:
- Large snouts, which aligns with the jaw;
- Ears closer to each other;
- Thicker eyebrows;
- Less rounded face;
When it comes to ears, a dog has an interesting feature that varies according to breed: their ears can fall down, or point up. You have greater freedom to explore the breeds and their characteristics in comparison to cats.
Other classes of animals, like birds to name a few, are very distinguished from others by having unique features as well:
Well, now its time to try for yourself. Try redraw the animals that I drew above as many times as necessary, until you can do it for yourself. Then, use the template below and make other animals that I havent shown. Remember to look for the special characteristics of each animal and try to reproduce them in paper:

Being able to draw the human form is an important skill for every artist. In so doing, the ability to draw muscles accurately must not be overlooked.
Whether making a realistic sketch or creating a comic book hero, bulging muscles often “make the man.” Much emphasis is often placed on the muscles of the arm, especially the biceps. The size of the biceps muscles is often used as an indicator of strength.
The term “biceps” comes from Latin terms meaning “two” and “head.” Biceps, therefore, are muscles with two heads, or two distinct sections. The biceps brachii is the muscle typically referred to as biceps. It is a prominent muscle of the upper arm.

Varying The Location Of The Features
While the eye line is usually halfway between the top of the head and the chin, interesting cartoon characters of many different types can be created by raising or lowering this line. Even with balloons of the same shape a shift in the eye line can be the start of a new character. Keep in mind, however, that since the features are evenly balanced on each side of the center line, this line serves as a fixed guide for locating them.

Addition Of The Skeleton
Now that we know how to define the forms, we need to define a simple skeleton structure. If you draw any kind of character in a cartoon style, you need to understand the main differences in muscles and bones among different cartoon categories, such as cats, birds and humans. This knowledge is necessary and it will guide us in relation to the character’s joints, such as elbows and knees.
When it comes to cartoon, it is important to keep in mind that we should be able to tell a story with each scene that we create. This does not happen often when it comes to photos or realistic drawings. Simply because human beings have a great facility to hide their real intentions.
In cartoon it’s different. The gestural and physical characteristics of your characters must be clear even without any dialogue or scene orientation. For that reason, it’s such a fascinating and adorable art style!
To summarize:
- Measure the proportions of your character with rounded shapes;
- Wrap the body using the famous rule of pear;
- Trace the lines that serve as guides of the main points of character’s joints ;
- Complete your character with the final details around the structure you’ve built.

All Cartoon Characters Are Based On Real People
All cartoon heads, regardless of the style of drawing, are based on real people. To turn a real head into a cartoon head you must do two things: Eliminate detail and exaggerate outstanding characteristics. This enables you to express the feelings and personality of the character clearly and sharply. To show you what we mean, we had four cartoonists draw their interpretations of three models. Their drawings, ranging from the realistic to the highly stylized, appear below. Note that each man has created a unique and individual cartoon while expressing the type and personality of the model.
