How To Draw A Santa Claus Materials
- Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tips.
- BlackSharpie Marker. These fine point permanent marker pens make nice black outlines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they get wet. Use them with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath to protect your tables.
- Prang Crayons. These are a bit softer than other crayons so they sometimes look like oil pastels. They also have a some nice brown shades that Crayola does not have unless you buy their larger boxes.
- Crayola Crayons. The reliable brand that always works well. The 24 pack has some of my favorite golden orange and yellow colors that seem a bit richer and warmer than the ones Prang has.

Drawing a cartoon Santa: some fun facts before starting sketching!
- St. Nicholas probably lived near 350 AD.
- He’s known as Black Peter in Morocco.
- If Santa travels from east to west, then the day of Christmas would last 31 hours because of the different time zones!
This tutorial will help you learn how to draw a cool Santa Claus! This very well-known character is easily recognizable with his nice red hat , his long white beard and his big black belt . Santa also wears white gloves , a red suit and some black boot . Usually, Santa is a little overweight. Still, he’s able to fly in the sky to deliver all his gifts.
Our big Santa is mostly made of circles and rectangles. His head is made of a circle, the body and the arms are made with rectangles while the beard is created with half of a circle.
His feet are tiny compared to the rest of his body. In this case, Santa really has a big head. You could draw one a little smaller and the result would also be great! Let’s try to draw one the easiest way possible!
Start by sketching an oval for the body and two rectangles for the head and the hat. Next, add two rectangles for the hands and two more for the feet. Then, work on the outline of Santa to make it more precise, more accurate.
At this stage, you can draw the beard and the hat. Continue your work by sketching the belt and the bag of Santa. Finish your drawing by adding the eyes, the nose, the mouth and the buttons.

How To Draw Cartoon Santa
By | Submitted On November 08, 2009
We all love Santa Clause with his Christmas presents and gifts, yet when it comes to drawing cartoon Santa not everyone is so much in for the excitement. The main difficulty most people experience in trying to create Santa cartoons is that they don’t know where to start or what kind of costume details to pay attention to.
Fortunately, drawing Santa Claus is actually quite easy once you nail down some of the basic steps. So hopefully this article will help answer questions beginners might have when learning how to draw cartoon Santa.
Step 1. Santa Face
Remember his long white curly beard? And those big mustache that look like the shape of tree leaves? How about his nose? Simple, for a cartoon drawing, it can just be simple circle or oval shape if you prefer. Color it with soft pink, as Santa Clause always seems to have a swollen nose because of freezing winter cold. For the eyes just create two circular dots and it’s all done.
Step 2. Santa Hat
This part is super easy. First draw the fur part that sits on Santa’s head – draft a rectangular shape and then simply round up the corners to depict its softness. After that you can add a curly triangle with a circular shape on its end.
Step 3. Draw Body
Now you probably know well how big Santa Clause is! So draw this part of cartoon Santa with fairly smooth curly lines, just like you would drawing soft toys. Simplify as many details as you like.
Step 4. Legs and Boots
Step 5. Gift Bag
Second Step Cartoon Santa Hat
Because this is a rather simple lesson, theres no need to go about drawing all the shapes that make up your cartoon santa. Instead, youre going to draw him literally from head to toe! And it starts with the very tip of your santa hat.
Alright, first draw a circular cloud near the top of your page. Make it a bit small as this cloud will become the ball at the tip of your santa hat.
After the ball, move down the page a little. Below the ball, draw another cloud. Make it a rectangular cloud. It will become the brim of your santa hat.
It doesnt matter how much space you leave between the ball and the brim of your santa hat. It also doesnt matter if the ball is centered with the brim. Your santa hat can be drawn in many different ways, so why not make the ball of your santa hat falling to the side? All you need to do, is draw the ball off-centered to the left or right.
Now to finish your santa hat. Draw two lines to connect the brim of the hat to the ball of the hat. Make them straight or curved if you like. Its up to you.
And thats it! Your cartoon santa now has a hat, and all it took was two simple clouds and two lines. Pretty easy so far isnt it?
Next, well move down below the brim of the hat to draw santas face

Getting Started With Drawing Guides
The best way to get students off to a good start to any drawing lesson is to show them how to use guides as a reference point.
You may have noticed that all of the tutorials on this site have a dashed line running through the center of each step, in both horizontal and vertical directions. If students make their own centered lines on their own paper, before drawing, they will have an easy reference to follow.
Drawing skills are all about getting the size and placement of lines on paper, so having some visual reference point to get started, will always help anyone learn how to be a little more accurate.
So does that mean students need to get out a ruler to draw a big fat line down the center of their paper before they start? Goodness no, please dont! That will most likely be hard to erase and distract from any finished art. No, simply fold the sheet of paper in half both ways, make a crease, and unfold. The beauty is that by the time the drawing is done and colored in, the creases will disappear.
And now, on to the Santa drawing project.
Draw The Distinct Facial Features
Right above Santa Claus head, draw a Christmas hat, as shown in the illustration.
In the middle of the face, draw a curved line for the nose with a moustache right underneath. Then, at the bottom of his face, create a long, stubble beard by drawing continuous curved lines to make the beard look thick and fluffy.

First Step Clouds For Your Santa
Drawing santa immediately becomes a lot easier after you learn to appreciate and then draw the simple clouds that hes composed of.
Any cloud in the sky can be simplified to simple lines or for our purposes, simple shapes. Just like the ones you see to the left a circle, a square and a triangle.
So, on a scrap piece of paper, and using a pencil, go ahead and draw these simple shapes. Make them any size you choose. This is strictly practice no santa drawing at thsi point!
Got your shapes drawn? Great! Now, take out a black pen or marker, and draw over each shape. Except instead of drawing straight lines, draw your lines so that theyre bumpy just like the way I did on the right.
Make yours more or less bumpy. Its up to you.
OK. Now go ahead and erase the pencil lines. Whats left? You guessed it! Three simple clouds each one resembling one of the three simple shapes.
Sure, you could have easily drawn these “clouds” without first drawing the shapes, but in doing so, you can really see just how easy drawing clouds is.
Next, youre going to begin to draw your cartoon santa. Remember how easy these cloud shapes were to draw. Youre about to find out just how important this is in being able to draw a simple cartoon santa. In fact, it all starts out by drawing a circular cloud the very top of santas hat!

How To Draw A Santa Cartoon With Both Arms Wide Open
A nice Santa cartoon is now the subject of this new drawing lesson! Indeed, it doesn’t matter whether you are in the middle of winter or relaxing under the sun. Drawing a fun cartoon character like Santa is always a pleasure!
Don’t forget that this tutorial is strictly based on adding nice shadows and reflection to a simple character. You don’t need to draw a detailed illustration to come up with something clean with a touch of 3D.
Important note: For each step available below, the first image represents the operation you must perform for this particular step. All changes are surrounded by a red outline.
On the second image, you will have the opportunity to see the result of this particular step.
Do you like this illustration? Good news! It can be yours now! Learn how 🙂
First, create your illustration using a few basic shapes. Don’t forget to add small details like the hat, the belt, the beard and long shoes. Once you are finished, add plain colors on each shape of the drawing. Great! The character looks good, but we can definitely add a few more effects to make it even better!
Once again, select each shape one-by-one and grab the gradient tool. Your goal is to create a simple shadow on each part of the body using both a darker and lighter version of the color already available on your shape. Don’t forget that the light is coming from above in the illustration so the bottom of each shape of the Santa cartoon must be darker.

Final Step Give Your Santa Head A Beard And Then Finish His Hat
In the steps below, Ive outlined a simple way to go about the rest of your drawing.
The bottom of the circle give you a nice idea of how the beard can pan out. I say can as really you can make it longer/shorter/curlier/spikier/etc. if you like!
Heres how to go about it
As with the hat, youll notice that Ive created sort of a 3D look by making the end look as though its being obstructed by the base. To do this, as you can see above in example two start off with a simple curved line which outlines the portion of the hat indented by Santas head before it turns over, falls to the side and is only partially seen in behind him. Got all that?
Next? Well, how about I leave the rest up to you. Remaining details and color see what else you can come up with!
And that wraps up this lesson hope you had some fun!

A Santa suit is the costume of a person portraying the character of Santa Claus. In America, this usually consists of boots, red pants, and a red coat with white fur trim. Another integral part is the Santa hat, also red with white trim.
This design is attributed to the artwork of Thomas Nast, published in the magazine Harper’s Weekly. It has also been used prominently in advertising by the Coca Cola Company.
In fact, this advertising may have caused the depiction’s popularity to spread in contrast to the more religious attire worn by Saint Nick in Europe.
Later, it became synonymous with Christmas decorations, stories, and media portrayals. Many people also wear Santa hats during the festive season.
It was long enough to keep the back of the neck warm, much as a scarf does.

Elves and gnomes were also said to wear this type of cap. One of its most famous wearers was Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, who was visited at bedtime by the Ghosts of Christmas Past.
