Learn How To Draw A Castle For Kids Step By Step With This Elementary Drawing Tutorial For Schoolers And Preschoolers

Hello dear readers, and in this drawing tutorial, we will teach you how to draw a castle for kids. It consists of several tiers, and its towers are dominated by gabled roofs decorated with flags. We will depict not only the entrance to the premises but also the loopholes. These are holes in the walls through which the owners of the castle fired at the enemy. At the same time, they served as observation windows. As you already understood, castles were built not only in order to live in them. They were also erected as fortifications that block the enemys access to the city and do not allow robbing civilians.

The drawing of the fortress will be of medium complexity, but, despite this, anyone can complete it. Below will be detailed instructions describing each step to complete the drawing.

Time needed: 40 minutes.

How to Draw a Castle for Kids

  • Draw the roof of the castle entrance.

Draw a straight horizontal line in the center of the sheet. Draw two small lines upward from its corners. Now sketch out the top border of the roof, which is jagged.

  • Sketch the outline of the walls of the gate.

Draw a square under the previously drawn roof.

  • Draw the gate.

To do this, draw a semi-oval, and in the middle draw some vertical lines to indicate the texture of the wooden gate.

  • Draw the second part.

Draw the second part of the castle in the same way on the other side.

  • Draw the walls of the towers.

Draw two straight lines from each tower roof downward.

  • Draw a window.
  • How To Draw A Castle Instructions

  • We begin with the tower on the left. Lets draw a simple rectangle. Slowly, draw the straight lines of the rectangle. You can make it as tall as you want. I would recommend to draw it the size of your hand.
  • Lets put a spire on top of our rectangle. We are going to draw a triangle. Three lines make a triangle. Make the line slightly wider than the rectangle.
  • Now were going to draw the same kind of shape over here to the right for the second tower. Leave some space in between as wide as your two hands together. Try to get it to match the other tower you just made. Symmetry is important for drawings. First the rectangle. Then, the triangle. Now we have two towers.
  • Next is the most difficult part of our castle drawing. The front walls of the castle. Were going to draw a square zigzag line here to connect the towers. Starting on the left, and going down and up several times until you reach the other tower. Make sure that you have an equal distance between them. Lets complete the front wall by connecting the towers down here. Simply draw a straight line in between.
  • Next, were going to draw the middle tower. So, lets start from the zigzag line we just made. Going up, draw three lines as if you are drawing a rectangle. The middle tower is where the king and the queen lives. So make it wider and taller than the previous two towers. Draw a triangle on top to finish the tower.

Draw The Brickwork And Final Details

This step of our guide on how to draw a castle will require a bit of patience, but it will be worth it!

We will be drawing some brickwork patterns onto your castle walls, and this is another step where your ruler will be your best friend.

Start by drawing vertical lines all along the walls of the castle, keeping them closer together.

You dont need to keep the distance between them totally even, as this will help give your castle a handcrafted feel.

Finally, add lots of small, vertical lines between the horizontal ones to make the brick patterns.

You can then finish off your castle drawing with some final details on the turrets and door of the castle, along with drawing some vegetation at the sides.

Which other details can you think of that you would like for your castle? Perhaps something like a moat or even a dragon flying around would look great!

Still in the same way of building up your drawing, add the top of the towers as well as the hill the castle’s standing on.

Rub out the unnecessary lines shown as dotted lines.

Add the crenellations in the towers and embellish the hill with a few details.

Add the arrow slits in the towers and draw the drawbridge door.

Add a little path to the hill.

    Colour in however you like.

To make the scene more realistic, you could add some birds in the sky or a soldier on the path for example!

Start Using Your Pen For Your Castle Drawing

We will start to go over the pencil lines with a pen in this part of your castle drawing. First, draw a line at the bottom of the castle to form the ground.

Then, you can carefully go over any of your pencil lines using your pen. However, for the central rectangle we will be adding a pattern to the top line.

As you can see in the picture, there will be a square, almost zigzagged line for the top of this rectangle that you can create using your ruler.

Its a bit intricate and tricky, but take your time with it and youll do an amazing job of it! Then, add any other lines you would like before we proceed on to the fifth step.

    • Pencil. The Ticonderoga brand are the most reliable, make nice dark lines when you need them, and are the easiest to erase. Buying the pre-sharpened ones will save busy teachers a lot of time.
    • Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tip erasers, especially when erasing leftover pencil lines after tracing.
    • BlackSharpie Marker. These fine point permanent marker pens make nice black outlines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they get wet. Use them with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath to protect your tables.
    • Prang Crayons. These are a bit softer than other crayons so they sometimes look like oil pastels. They also have a some nice brown shades that Crayola does not have unless you buy their larger boxes.
    • Crayola Crayons. The reliable brand that always works well. The 24 pack has some of my favorite golden orange and yellow colors that seem a bit richer and warmer than the ones Prang has.

How to Draw a Castle Easy for kids step by step

Drawing a cartoon castle: some fun facts before starting sketching!

    • There is only one five-sided castle in England .
    • The Windsor castle is the biggest in England.
    • The Prague Castle is probably one of the biggest in the world.

    Step 1

Imagine you are a cartoon knight entering a big castle! How fun could it be? This cool castle is made of five towers , some arrow slits , a drawbridge and a small ward .

This castle is pretty basic. You can easily draw one with numerous towers, a chapel, dungeons and many more other parts. Complex castle are fun to draw and the effect is really more spectacular.

    Step 2

Since this castle has five towers, you can see that it is made of a big pentagon. The towers are made with cylinders. In this case, the castle seems perfect. All proportions are accurate.

This one doesn’t have a chapel or any dungeons so it is really simple to figure out. The drawbridge is made of a rectangle and the main entrance is drawn with an arc.

    Step 3

Let’s try to draw our castle. First, draw three rectangles, two for the towers and one for the main wall. Next draw two triangles to form the conical spire. Repeat the same process to sketch another tower in the middle. Add some details like the flags, bricks and the arrow slits. Add some colors and voila!

Finish Off Your Drawing With Some Color

Now that you have worked hard on your castle drawing and carefully drawn the final details, you can relax with some beautiful colors in this step.

We used a darker, more muted combination of browns and blues for our castle, but while that is one option at your disposal, you should let yourself get creative with your color choices!

Choosing your colors is just part of it, though, as you can also experiment with some great art mediums to bring your drawing to life.

From the bright vibrancy of paints and colored markers to the colder, more muted tones you get from watercolor and colored pencils, you have so many options to make your drawing look great!

Which colors and mediums will you choose for your artwork?

When Kids Learn How To Draw A Castle They Can Use Both Sides Of Their Brain The Right To Make It Look Structurally Sound And The Left For All The Fairy Tale Possibilities

When your kids are ready for something beyond the basic castle drawing, try this one out. It has the symmetry that helps them see and plan things out, but instead of sitting on a flat line, its perched on a hill. Not one that is quite as steep as some of the famous castles in, say Germany, but a bit of a slope. It makes the castle surroundings look a lot more interesting, which is part of their allure.

Media tip? Go with something that allows neat coloring, like crayons, pencil crayons or markers. Anything that smears too much will get frustrating when trying to color small details like the flags.
