Crafting: Celtic Cross Pendant

I began by making the circle for the centre of the cross. I could then cut this into sections to place around the middle section of cross. I did this in parts in order to have it sitting slightly higher than the circle detail. A slow process but well worth it I hope you will agree!

Once I began fitting in the sections, I numbered each piece so that when it came to soldering they sit together perfectly.

Celtic crosses are synonymous with Ireland and Irish jewelry. Ive been doing some research into these historic stone carved crosses to get some inspiration for a new piece Im designing. While we have this Silver Celtic Cross for ladies on our online shop, Id been planning on designing this Celtic Cross Necklace for men for quite some time.

Before I began, I visited a number of Irish standing stones around Ireland and much of my inspiration has been taken from that trip. I knew I wanted to retain the classic shape of the Celtic cross as I love how the circle and the cross tie in so nicely together. I especially like the subtle details of the rounded cut-outs on the axis of the cross and the way it tapers in width, both elements I thought important to keep in the final design.

So I have the basic shapewhere do I go from here? Well my next step was to look at the various finishes and decorations.

What is a Celtic cross? It is a form of the cross used in some Christian religions that features a nimbus or halo around the middle. The Celtic cross became widespread in Ireland and Britain beginning in the ninth century.

Stone Celtic crosses on pyramidal bases from the Middle Ages can still be seen in town squares, as funerary monuments, and in war memorials.

Why does the cross feature a halo? Some researchers feel it harkens to the wooden struts that were used to support the arms of large wooden crosses. Others trace it to the longstanding religious iconography in which circles of light were used to denote holiness.

For example, statues of gods and goddesses from ancient Egypt often featured a circle behind the head. This was later adopted into Christian art to denote the holiness of saints and others. It is also the source of the metal ring, or halo, seen floating above the heads of angels depicted in modern popular culture.

Another theory lies in Irish legend. It is said that Saint Patrick introduced the Christian cross to the area, combining it with the sun cross or solar wheel “to give pagan followers an idea of the importance of the cross.” It is thought that linking the Christian symbol with the “life-giving properties of the sun” would make Christian worship more appealing.

What Are Celtic Knots

How to draw a Celtic cross

A Celtic knot is a motif that is infinite. It has no beginning or end. Celtic knots were originally seen in sculpture, carving, and manuscripts of Ancient Celtic people.

Knots may have been such a common motif because the Celtic religion prohibited realistic depictions of living creatures. When Christians came to power in Ireland they adopted the knots to their own meanings and purposes.

The meaning and symbolism behind the knot designs is mostly speculation. The designs held different meaning for different groups of people.

Card : The Recent Past

This card indicates events and influences that are more recent. This card is often connected to Card 3, but not always. As an example, if Card 3 indicated financial problems, Card 4 might show the Querent has filed for bankruptcy or lost their job. On the other hand, if the reading is generally positive, Card 4 might instead reflect happy events that have taken place recently.

But What Exactly Is A Celtic Knot

Glad you asked! These knots are complete loops that have no start or finish.

They could be said to represent eternity, whether this means loyalty, faith, friendship or love.

So if you were to create or draw a Celtic knot, you would have one start point and eventually finish back where you started, which symbolizes how life and eternity are interconnected.

The Celts were certainly a wise bunch.

  • You can find Celtic knots in the Book of Kells, 8th century St. Teilo Gospels and the Lindisfarne Gospels.

The book of Kells, written in Latin and stored safely in Dublin. Clear evidence of a Celtic Knot. Created around 800AD.

  • It spread like wildfire after that. Heck, even in the Roman Empire, there is evidence of handicrafts with Celtic knots interwoven onto them.
  • Quickly followed up in the 3rd and 4th Century with floor patterns to architecture, even spreading into Islamic art and Byzantine architecture.

So yes, while that may look just like a pretty necklace or a leg tattoo, you are actually wearing a piece of history.

Some historians even believe that Celtic knots could date back as far as 500 B.C. However, when looking into this further, the evidence is vague to back up their claims.

But that being said, anything from B.C lacks a lot of proof. It was over 2000 years ago, after all!

Card : Hopes And Fears

While this isn’t exactly the same as the previous card, Card 9 is very similar in aspect to Card 8. Our hopes and fears are often conflicted, and at times we hope for the very thing we are afraid of. In the example of the Querent torn between the lover and the husband, she may be hoping that her husband finds out about the affair and leaves her because this lifts the burden of responsibility from her. At the same time, she may fear his finding out.

How To Draw Celtic Knots : Crossed Cords

The basic, underlying unit is two crossed cords in a square. Here is what it looks like:

Notice which cord is drawn on top. Its the one starting top left and coming down to bottom right. That makes this unit a right-handed cross. Its called right-handed because it looks like your two forefingers crossed with the right hand on top:

If the other cord were on top, it would be a left-handed cross. Both are necessary. All Celtic knotwork consists of lines of right-handed crosses alternating with lines of left-handed. Together, these construct the over-and-under of a woven design.

Were going to start by using right-handed crossed cords, and add the left-handeds later.

Heres some good news. If you can draw these two crossed cords in a square well, you can learn how to draw Celtic knots:

Drawing these crossed cords well means:

Get used to stopping your lines well short of the box edges. This will be important later on. When you draw the two lines which form each cord, keep them parallel and the same length. Make both cords middling fat and the same thickness as each other. A good guide is to imagine each line originating from a point one-quarter of the way along each edge of the square, like this:

So, youve got the idea of the crossed cords? Its the first principle you need to know well: these uniform Xs in boxes are a fundamental building block from which you can create all the knotwork you like.
