The Double Toilet Paper Roll Method
Perhaps youre hoping to make a pom pom thats a lot bigger and thicket than what you can get on the work tongs? Then save up a couple of empty toilet paper rolls and hold them side by side. Wrap the yarn around and around the thickness of both rolls held together until youre happy with the size and tie the pom pom in the middle between the two rolls so you can cut on the outer side of each. The Hand Wrapping Method
Would you rather make the pom pom with your bare hands instead of using all kinds of templates and tools, because that and a pair of scissors is all you really have to work with right now? Well, dont worry, because thats totally possible too! Hold your four fingers out and wrap the yarn around them like youve seen in every method so far. When it comes time to wrap the middle of the pom pom before you cut the fringe, do it between your middle and forefinger, just like shows you here.

Fluff Each Side Of The Pom
This step is the most time consuming part of this project. It may seem like a lot of extra work, but even if you were to buy a pre-made pom-pom for at least five times the price, they are usually sent un-fluffed, so youd have to do this step anyway.
- Working in sections, take two strips at a time and pull the two strips in opposite directions . Repeat on all the strips until the entire pom-pom is full and poofy.
- Be careful not to pull TOO hard since the plastic is thin and will stretch and tear if the pom-pom is fluffed too vigorously.
The second and third pictures show how the pom-pom should look when fully fluffed.

Why Are Strands Of Yarn Falling Out Of Your Pom Pom
It is very frustrating if your pom pom falls apart after all your hard work.
To prevent this from happening you want to tie your pom pom up super tight. Your yarn wont fall out so quickly.
Tightly looping the string around two or three times before you make your knot can help as well.
Another thing is to not start pulling on strands of yarn just to see if they come out. If you pull hard enough they will. And if you pull out a few of them, all the others get more room to move and fall out on their own. So resist the urge to pull on them.
How To Make Crepe Streamer Pom Poms For Cheerleading
Cheerleaders use pom-poms to emphasize their words, draw the attention of spectators and add to the overall effect of their movements. When you purchase a set of pom-poms, they are commonly made out of plastic however, you can make your own out of crepe paper streamers instead. These pom-poms do not last as long, but making your own allows you to fully customize them to match the colors you need for a specific occasion.
Cut lengths of crepe paper into streamers that are twice as long as you want the pom-poms to be. For instance, if you want the pom-poms to be 4 inches, cut the streamers into 8-inch lengths. You will need at least 10 full streamers for a good-sized pom-pom. You can always add more or subtract some if you arent happy with the fullness.
Cut the streamers down the center lengthwise to make the pom-pom strands thinner. If you want thicker strands, you do not need to cut the streamers in half lengthwise.
Fold the streamers in half so they are the proper length for your pom-pom. Bunch all of the streamers together to form a puffy pom-pom.
Tape the bunched ends of the streamers one end of a wooden dowel or unsharpened pencil. Overlap the streamers with the dowel or pencil by about 1/2 inch for a better hold.

Sew The Yarn Tails To The Hat
Pull on the tails so that the pom pom is secure on the right side. Then begin sewing one tail securely to the hat: Go back up to the right side, sew through the pom-pom, then come back through the wrong side. Youll want to sew the tail through the loop that holds the pom-pom together to really secure it.
Repeat this process with the other tail, then weave in the loose ends with the tapestry needle.
Pro Tip: You can knot your pom-pom yarn tails together to make sure they dont fall off. If youre totally against knots in your projects, just be sure your sewing is secure.
Remember, pom-poms look great on hats, but theyre also fun on scarves, jeans, throw pillows, even gift wrap basically anything!
Wrap The Yarn Around The Cardboard
Lay the end of your working yarn on the edge of the cardboard, stretching it across the width of the cardboard. Hold that end of yarn in place with your thumb as you begin wrapping the yarn around the cardboard, width-wise.
Try to wrap the yarn evenly around the cardboard as you go, keeping the same amount of tension and not pulling too tightly. If you pull too tightly, the yarn may stretch, making the yarn pom-pom smaller after you cut it.
