How To Make Cheer Leading Pom Poms – Seahawks colors

Cheerleaders use pom-poms to emphasize their words, draw the attention of spectators and add to the overall effect of their movements. When you purchase a set of pom-poms, they are commonly made out of plastic; however, you can make your own out of crepe paper streamers instead. These pom-poms do not last as long, but making your own allows you to fully customize them to match the colors you need for a specific occasion.

Cut lengths of crepe paper into streamers that are twice as long as you want the pom-poms to be. For instance, if you want the pom-poms to be 4 inches, cut the streamers into 8-inch lengths. You will need at least 10 full streamers for a good-sized pom-pom. You can always add more or subtract some if you aren’t happy with the fullness.

Cut the streamers down the center lengthwise to make the pom-pom strands thinner. If you want thicker strands, you do not need to cut the streamers in half lengthwise.

Fold the streamers in half so they are the proper length for your pom-pom. Bunch all of the streamers together to form a puffy pom-pom.

Tape the bunched ends of the streamers one end of a wooden dowel or unsharpened pencil. Overlap the streamers with the dowel or pencil by about 1/2 inch for a better hold.

How To Make Small Plastic Cheerleading Pom Poms

Cheerleading pom-poms made with plastic bags give a satisfying rattle when they are shaken. They create a bright, visual display that draws the eye, and home-made pom-poms are ideal for would-be cheerleaders to practice with at home.

The 60 Second Full Ball Method

Perhaps what you really need is a massive novelty pom pom and youre not too concerned about fullness or density as long as youve got a good size? Then check out how Handmade Charlotte made a massive pom pom out of an entire ball of yarn just by tying it tightly around the middle and cutting it! The results are looser and less dense than some other methods but amazingly big and poofy.

The Embroidery Hoop Method

Do you have small embroidery hoops stashed somewhere in your crafting room left over from the time you tried to teach your kids needlepoint and cross stitch? Then put them to another use by using them as a frame for pom pom making! This time, youll wind your yarn around the outer edges and tie it off in the middle on the inside of the frame before you cut, just like Red Brolly did here.

Fluff Each Side Of The Pom

How to Make Cheerleader Tissue Pom Poms

This step is the most time consuming part of this project. It may seem like a lot of extra work, but even if you were to buy a pre-made pom-pom for at least five times the price, they are usually sent un-fluffed, so youd have to do this step anyway.

  • Working in sections, take two strips at a time and pull the two strips in opposite directions . Repeat on all the strips until the entire pom-pom is full and poofy.
  • Be careful not to pull TOO hard since the plastic is thin and will stretch and tear if the pom-pom is fluffed too vigorously.

The second and third pictures show how the pom-pom should look when fully fluffed.

Cut 40 1-foot squares out of the plastic table runners for each pom-pom. You can make this process much easier if you fold the table runners several times and cut a bunch of 1-foot squares at once. If you want a two-toned pom-pom set, cut 40 squares of each color. If you want bigger pom poms, cut 18-inch squares, and if you want smaller ones, start with the 1-foot squares and trim the ends of the finished product to your liking.

Luz Diaz/Demand Media

Count out 40 squares and place them in a pile with the edges lined up. Layer the squares in an alternating color pattern if youre using more than one color.

Hold the squares together and carefully make 4-inch cuts on one of the edges, with the cuts going toward the opposite side of the square. Space the cuts approximately one-half to one-inch apart.

The most efficient way I found to do this was as follows.

  • Remove tablecloth from package and unfold it partway so that it is spread out to its full LENGTH but is still folded across the WIDTH. There should be four layers of tablecloth at this point. Folded like this, the tablecloth should be about 12 inches wide.
  • Use scissors to make a cut the entire length of the tablecloth along the remaining folds so that there are four long layers 12 inches wide, stacked on top of each other.
  • Place the ruler alongside the tablecloth and cut across to the ruler every 9 inches

1 It doesnt really matter what size tissue paper sheets you have but I wouldnt go any smaller than A4 . Simply make a pile of all the colours you want to use in your pom poms. We used about 10 sheets.

2 Were going to cut the strips for both pom poms at the same time so fold the tissue paper pile in half lengthways. Then using your pinking shears to make lovely zig-zag lines, cut thin strips all along the length of the paper leaving a couple of inches at the top uncut to use as your handle later.

3 Once youve cut thin strips all along your tissue paper, open up the two halves and cut along the fold to separate them.

4 Roll the uncut sections of tissue paper tightly to make the handles for your pom poms.

5 Lastly wrap the electrical tape tightly around the handle to make it secure and to hold all the colourful pom pom tassels in place.

Cheerleading has been around since at least the 1880s, when college football first became popular at America’s Ivy League schools. Participants were then called “yell leaders.” Cheerleading combines dance, acrobatics, and flashy attire to encourage the team and stir up the crowd.

Did you know? While we often think of cheerleaders as women today, the first cheerleaders were men. By the early 1990s, women began cheerleading, but they were still excluded from the all-male schools where cheerleading began – Ivy league universities first admitted women in 1987. Roughly 95 percent of today’s cheerleaders are women. Lots of anime cartoons also feature cheerleaders.
