How to Draw a Chinese Dragon

This third step of our guide on how to draw a Chinese dragon will be all about adding more pen details to your image.

First, you can keep extending the square scales along the chest of the dragon. Then, add some pen detail to the other leg and foot thats near the bottom of the dragon.

There is also some more fiery detail trailing behind this leg.

Then, the dragons body will continue with some more curvy, twisting lines, and then the scales will continue as the body loops over.

The reference image will be very helpful in seeing where the scales should be going to make the body placement consistent!

How To Draw A Dragon Head Step By Step

Step 1: Draw a V like shape and continue to draw small lines parallel to each other to form the beak. Add some curves for the snout and a tongue if you require.

Step 2: From the top of the snout add a line to form the top portion of the face as shown. Lengthen the jawlines and draw the teeth.

Step 3: The eye is formed by drawing a V shape sideways. Increase the depth of the eye as shown. The pupil is drawn as a thick oval.

Step 4: The fins are drawn by series of curves.

Step 5: We then draw a series of pointed curves which forms the top of the face. These spine like shapes gives it a serpent look. We draw a curved oval for the nostril.

Step 6: The neck is formed by drawing wavy lines. Shading is done for more effects and circles shows the scales.

The Body Of The Chinese Dragon

Before you start, a little hint: new design elements at each step are indicated in red.

Step 1: Start by drawing a small sketch in the shape of a simple circle in the upper left corner of your white sheet of paper. This will be the base of the head of your Chinese dragon. Be careful not to make it too small: think of the surface of a billiard ball. The circle doesnt have to be perfectly round!

Step 2: Draw a curved line on the left side of the circle, which will go down to the middle, then draw a second horizontal line just as curved that will cut the circle in two. These are construction lines that will allow you to draw the dragons head. ?

This is a very good start!

Step 3: Draw a first line in the shape of a C that will start at the beginning of the previous line, until almost its end inside the head. Draw a second U-shaped line this time at the bottom of the head on the left side. These are markers for the dragons jaw.

Step 4: You have to draw 2 circles :

?A circle similar in size to the dragons head just below, slightly offset to the right. The farther this circle is from the head, the longer the neck of the dragon will be.?A smaller circle in the upper right for the lower part of the body. These 2 circles will determine the shape and the waviness of the dragon. You can decide to make your dragon longer if you wish, just move the circles away!

Dont add too much detail you only need quick sketches. Use them to figure out the proportions of your image, the pose of the dragon, how long the tail will be, etc. Curved lines work well when drawing dragons as they play up their serpentine nature.

Doing those quick little gesture sketches, without going into any detail, is going to give you a very powerful form, Merien says.

For simplicity, start with a rectangle to mimic the dragons head, wider at the base and thinner at the nose. Use circles of varying sizes to simulate joints, like those of the wings. Use a connecting line to form the basis of the spine and tail. After that, if you connect the edges of your basic shapes, you will start to see the shape of the neck, tail, and torso. Fill out the dragon wings with big, swooping lines from each wingtip. Remember, you can craft each anatomical section to correspond with a real-world animal and use that as a reference for the structure of your dragon.

First Step Dragon Drawing S Framework

Drawing a Chinese Dragon with Paolo Morrone

Because the chinese dragon is long, skinny and snake-like, it curves around to form a number of different patterns as it flies through the sky.

If you take the letter “S” as Ive done on the left, you can use it to come up with a guideline from which to make your Chinese dragon drawing. Sure there are many ways you could draw it but I think the S-way looks great. Feel free to change the shape of your Chinese dragon if you like.

Using the S as your guide, draw a simple curving line. The trick is to deviate from the S so that you can yield a truly unique-looking guideline from which to create your Chinese dragon drawing.

In my case, I decided to cut the lines short before each end of the S. The top line curves up, and away in the other direction. It become the tail of the dragon. The bottom line later to become the head and neck of the dragon, curves up and to the left just before the end of the S. Go ahead and do the same with yours.

Got your Chinese dragon drawing guideline all complete? Good stuff! Lets continue

    INFO BOX: European Dragons

Dragon mythologies evolved separately in Europe and in Asia. European dragons are often depicted as being dinosaur-like or griffin-like, having six limbs – arms, legs, and wings. This style has been especially common since the Middle Ages. European dragons depicted with only two legs are known as wyverns.

Early Mesopotamian mythologies introduce the idea of a hero slaying the dragon, and this is carried on throughout Middle Age literature. The image of dragons protecting or hoarding a treasure may have arisen from the practice of introducing snakes to food storage areas to deter mice.
