By the 1800s, gingerbread houses were first made in Germany following the publication of a certain fairy tale.

The tradition traveled to the United States with German immigrants. The construction of a gingerbread house then became a cherished Christmas custom.

Gingerbread houses have long appeared in popular culture. A German fairy tale about Hansel and Gretel tells of two children lost in the woods who stumble upon a witch’s cottage. The house is “built of gingerbread, cakes, candy and with window panes of clear sugar.”

In architecture, an embellishment called gingerbread was named after the fancifully decorated gingerbread houses.

Today, businesses often compete to have the biggest or best gingerbread houses.

The world record for the largest gingerbread house goes to a 2,520 square foot cookie in Texas, USA.

The largest gingerbread village was built at the New York Marriott Marquis hotel, housing over 150 gingerbread buildings.

Instructions For Your Gingerbread House Art Project

1. First, take your watercolor paper and tape it down to a wooden board using painters tape. This helps to keep the paper from buckling as you paint and helps the paper to dry nice and flat.

If you dont have a board to tape your paper down to, you can skip this step.

Draw a dot in the middle of your paper where you want the top of the roof to be and then draw two lines for the roof. Add in the sides of the house.

Draw the snow drips coming off of the roof. Add in a door and windows on either side.

Use a small plastic lid or paint bottle to trace three circles above the door and windows for the wreath and candies.

Kids can draw a tree, lollipop, or even candy canes as decoration around the house.

Finish off your drawing by adding in the gumdrops and any other special touches kids want to draw in.

2. If the drawing of the gingerbread house is too dark, use an eraser to lighten the pencil lines up a bit. This way the pencil lines wont show through the oil pastel.

Using a white oil pastel, draw snowflakes in the sky, outline the roof and color in the snow drips, and trace over the lollipop stick and the swirl lines.

Remind kids to press hard with the oil pastel to ensure the best results when painting over with watercolors.

3. Paint over the sky with clean water. Remind kids to be careful not to paint inside the house, tree, lollipop, or gumdrops.

Let everything dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Begin drawing your cartoon Christmas lights with a simple square, just like the one you see on the left.

Then, similar to the ornament in the previous lesson, sketch an oval above the square so that it overlaps the top.

Now, with the oval in place go ahead and erase the portion that overlaps the square so that all thats left is something that looks like a Christmas light the bottom being the light-holder, and the top being the actual light.

Actually, you may want to draw the holders so that theyre a bit skinnier, longer, etc. No problem. And change the shape/size of the bulb too! Its completely up to you as to how you want your Christmas lights to look.

OK one last step and youre Christmas lights are complete!

Diy Wooden Christmas Village

by Shara, Woodshop Diaries

How cute are these DIY wooden Christmas village houses??!

I LOVE Scandinavian Christmas decor! I cant get enough of that simple black, white, natural wood and green garland combination.

So, to incorporate a little Scandi into my decor this year, I built a Scandinavian style DIY wooden Christmas village for my fake brick fireplace mantle!

Its obviously a very simple style, but I LOVE the natural wood colors and the option to use them all year long since they arent specifically just for Christmas. These would be cute decorated up for any holiday or season, or just left natural for some modern shelf decor

Oh, and did I mention that this whole project cost less than $20?? You couldnt even buy one tiny piece of a regular Christmas village for that price! But, the real reward isnt the dollar savedits the fact you can say I made that, amiright??

Okay, so lets get to the how to, shall we? First, let me explain a little something. Ill show you a very general way of how I made the tall skinny house. You can customize whatever size or window/door design you wantthere is no right or wrong way of doing this.

The two houses on the left and right are made exactly the same as far as procedure, but with different dimensions and window placement. The house in the middle is made the same way as well, just with different dimensions and I added a little piece on the front. Feel free to get creative with it

Now Keep Adding Some Candy Decorations

There are already lots of delicious pieces of candy on your house, but you can never have too much candy!

For that reason, we will add some more in this next step of our guide on how to draw a gingerbread house.

First, start by drawing a large circle underneath the tip of the roof. This will then have some swirling lines inside of it and some small shapes on the side to make it look like candy in a wrapper. Then, we will draw some wavy lines beneath that and add some small circles along them.

This step will then be finished off with some candy cane supports for the house. You can draw these with some straight lines with curved ones going along it for that signature candy cane pattern.

Decide On The Sizing For Houses

First, you need to decide how large you want your Christmas village house. I made mine fairly large. The tall one is 16 tall x 6 wide and 6 ½ deep. But you can make yours however large or small you want.

Once you decide on your sizing, use a jig saw and a straight edge, or a table saw if you have one, to rip your ¼ plywood to the correct widths.

To make it easy, I just did 6 wide for the fronts and sides of my house so I only had to rip one size. Then cut two pieces the height you want your house. So in my case, it was 16.

By Step Instructions For Drawing A Gingerbread House

      1. Begin by drawing two slanted lines, forming a triangle shape that is open at the bottom. Notice that one line is longer than the other. This forms the eaves of the house’s roof.

      2. Draw a slightly wavy line extending from the point of the roof. This line forms the top of the roof. Then, draw a diagonal line downward, forming the opposite eave of the roof.

      3. Connect the two eaves with a wavy line, fully enclosing the side of the roof. Then, draw another wavy line. Start at the rear eave follow the edge of the roof, then up one side of the front eave and down the other side. This is icing that holds the gingerbread house together. Doesn’t it also resemble ice and snow clinging to the roof?

      4. Draw another wavy line. Begin at the front peak of the eaves, and draw the line just below the top of the roof. Double it back upon itself, traveling just above the roof and down one eave. This creates more adhesive icing.
