Draw A Tangent Line In Illustrator
Tangent lines are easy to draw in Adobe Illustrator. In this quick tutorial we’ll use an easy method for drawing perfect tangent lines every time.
In geometry, a tangent line to a plane curve at a given point is the straight line that “just touches” the curve. Tangent lines help give your icons and illustrations a symmetrical and modern look.
To begin, use the Ellipse Tool to draw a circle. Constrain the proportions by holding down the Shift Key as you create the shape.
Next, with the Pen Tool , draw a long line. Hold down the Shift Key so the 2 points align vertically.
Select both shapes. From the Align Window, select Horizontal Align Left.
Still in the Align Window, select Vertical Align Center.
Your objects should look similar to this:
Select the line. Go to the Object Menu > Path > Add Anchor Points.
This will add one point in the center of your line:
Select both shapes. From the Tools Panel, select the Rotate Tool .
Rotate both shapes:
Using the Direct Selection Tool , select one end of the line and delete it.
Now, let’s delete a portion of the circle shape:
Select the overlapping anchor points and Join them: Object Menu > Path > Join.
Now your shape should look like this:
That’s all there is to it. Now you’ve got a straight line that extends perfectly from the curve. This simple method will save you tons of time in the long run and really makes nice curved lines.
Set Up Your Color Palette
The next thing you should consider is your color palette.
Itâs important to think about your project’s colors before starting your vector illustration. Of course, you can change it whenever you want, but it’s much easier to have them in mind in advance.
The easiest way to select your colors is by using the Eyedropper Tool which allows you to pick colors directly from your reference images. But you can also play around with different shades of green for fresh leaves, or various hues of brown, yellow, or red if you are drawing autumn leaves.
The colors Soodabeh used in this video are:⢠107C7C for the leaf body⢠0F4848 for the stalk and veins⢠0A4343 for the shadow
If you want to learn how to create a color palette from scratch, we recommend you read this guide.

How To Draw A Leaf With Vectors
Some leaves have simple shapes that are easy to draw, while others demonstrate a beautiful complexity. And this is how we approached this drawing tutorial. Weâre going to start with a simple leaf, inspired by a Pilea plant, and move on to the infamous Monstera.
This guide was developed in collaboration with the talented Soodabeh Daramvani an Iranian illustrator and icon designer and a frequent tutor on our YouTube channel. She breaks down the whole process below in a step-by-step tutorial.
Letâs follow along! You can watch the video above or use the tutorial steps in the rest of this article.

For An Arbitrary Angle:
Use this tool/plugin for Illustrator by Astute Graphics called which will accomplish this for other arbitrary angles
You use the Tangent Circle option
Select the point where the lines intersect and then drop the anchor based on how large you’d like the circle.
- Is there a fast way to figure out the angle between two lines? I could manually measure and all of that fun stuff, but that’s a pain. EDIT: Nevermind, I get it now. EDIT EDIT: Okay, no. It’s still not wanting to snap to both lines unless they’re at 90 degrees, and horizontal/vertical.Jan 15 ’18 at 1:37
Obviously you want exact snaps and absolutely no angle measurements.
Here’s one patience exercise:
Your two crossing lines are blue and red, the circle is green. Start by drawing a horizontal line from the crossing point and duplicating the blue line. The duplicate is later seen as cyan. Be sure you have smart guides and snap to points in use. No other snaps!
Select blue and red lines. With the rotation tool rotate the blue and red line around their crossing point make the blue line horizontal this way. Leave the duplicate intact .Drag the cirle into the angle so that the bottom anchor sits on the blue line.
Make a 90 degrees rotated copy of the red line. Drag its end to the center of the circle . Bring the circle to front and add a new anchor to the circle at crossing A. Remove the rotated copy of the red line.
With the rotation tool rotate back the circle and red & blue lines. Remove the extra lines.
How To Make A Semicircle In Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator is a sophisticated drawing program that can be used for simple or complex drawings. When you begin to use Illustrator, understanding the way the tools work and using them to draw basic shapes is the first skill you must learn. After you master drawing semicircles in Adobe Illustrator, you can use the same skills to draw other shapes and patterns that make your Illustrator drawings intricate and professional looking.
Open a new, blank Illustrator document by selecting “New” in the File menu.
Find the Rectangle tool in the toolbar. Click and hold your mouse over the Rectangle tool until you see the other shape options available. Hover your mouse over the Ellipse Tool option and release the mouse.
Draw a perfect circle on your artboard by holding down both the “Shift” key and the mouse button while you click in the document and drag the mouse cursor. Release the mouse when half of the circle is the size you want your semicircle to be.
In the toolbar, click the Direct Selection Tool, which is a white arrow.
Select the anchor point at the bottom of the circle. Two handlebars appear on either side of the anchor point. Click the end of one handlebar and stretch it so that its end aligns with the width of the circle. Repeat for the other side. This step rounds out the bottom of the circle to its original arc.

How To Curve A Picture Around A Circle In Adobe Illustrator
Occasionally, when you are designing something you might want to curve your design on a sphere to give it more dimension. For example, if you are creating any sort of ball you can create the pattern of the ball and curve it around a sphere. In todays tutorial, I am going to teach you how to do just that. We will use a map of the world to create the sphere part of a globe. I am going to include the map of the globe here so you can follow along.
So lets get started!
Select your map and go to your symbols panel in your right side toolbar. If you cannot find your symbols panel, go to window in your top toolbar and scroll down to symbols.
Your symbols panel looks something like this. In the top right corner of your swatches panel there is 4 lines that form into a rectangle. Click on that to reveal a drop down menue filled with more symbols options.
Name your new symbol and press ok.
If you did everything correctly the world map should show up in your symbols panel. Now drag your world map to the side so you can work on the sphere part of your globe.
Draw a circle with your ellipse tool . With your pen tool draw a line directly down the center of the circle.
Select the line and the circle. In your left side toolbar select the shape builder tool .
Cut Path At Selected Anchor Points
The Cut Path At Selected Anchor Point icon cuts a path at the anchor point, and the one anchor point becomes two anchor points with one located directly on top of the other.
Select the path to see its current anchor points.
Select the anchor point where you want to split the path using the Direct Selection tool.
When you split the path at an anchor point, a new anchor point appears on top of the original anchor point, and one anchor point is selected.
Use the Direct Selection tool to adjust the new anchor point or path segment.

Illustrator Tutorial: Wrapping A Pattern Around A Circular Path
Start by creating a circle, an object you want to wrap, and a copy and pasted verison of the object .
Highlight both objects and select Object => Blend => Make. You should now see a continuous pattern between your two objects.
Now highlight the newly blended path and the circular path and select Object => Blend => Replace Spine.
Notice how the object does not wrap around the full circle. This is not what we want, so lets go back a step so that the blended object and the circle are separate. Select the scissor tool and click on one of the points along the circular path . You will not notice any changes, however, your circular path is now split at the point you just selected with the scissor tool.
Now if you select Object => Blend => Replace Spine again, you should see something similar to what is displayed below.
We have successfully wrapped an object around a circular path. However, Im still not satisfied with how it looks. I want it to look more like a sun, with the triangles pointed outward. Therefore, with the blended path highlighted, lets select Object => Blend => Blend Options. Under Orientation select the Align to Path button . If you select the Preview box, you can see how the triangles are now pointed outwards.
We also have options for Spacing. There are three options:
Once you have made the changes you like, select OK, and you should get a result similar to what is displayed below.
Identify The Basic Shapes
Here’s a drawing secret: You can deconstruct anything you want to illustrate into basic shapes.
This trick will make your life so much easier. So try to be analytical here and find the basic shapes that form your main object.
For example, the first leaf has a simple, circular shape while the maple leaf has a lot of angles and the third leaf blade is made up of 2 triangles joined together.

Place Your Text In A Circle Or Any Other Non
It’s easy to add text to a circle in Illustratordraw a circle, choose the Path Text Tool, click the circle, and type. The tricky part comes when you want to add two phrases and have one right side up at the top of the circle and one right side up at the bottom of the circle. In this article, we show you how to type on a path in Illustrator.
Instructions in this article use Illustrator CC 2017 but apply to any modern version since this has been a long-established feature.
How To Snap Line Tangent On Circle
Copy link to clipboard
How a line can be snap to a circle at a certain angle? I no found tangent option anywhere. Image above shows that when displayed in normal size everything is ok, but when you zoom in and switch the display to outline you can see that the line does not touch the circle at all, or it could be that the line cuts a circle. Where is the tangent in the Illustrator?

Create One More Layer
To add a new layer, just tap the plus button in the Layers Tab, and place the newly created layer under the sketch layer.
This way, everything you draw is going to be underneath your transparent layer.
Try incorporating multiple layers into your workflow when adding any dimension to your leaves, like shadows, details, and so on. It will help keep everything neat and organized, and it’s a great habit to learn early in your illustration journey!

Create A Duplicate And Scale Down
Select the large black circle we have just made and press Cmd/Ctrl + C to copy and then immediately press Cmd/Ctrl + F, which is the shortcut for Edit > Paste in Front.
Change the Fill color of this shape to solid white, and again, without any Stroke color so that we can see the difference between the two shapes accurately.
Now the white circle should be completely covering the black circle since its exactly on top of the shape and is exactly the same size.
We now want to hold down both the Shift + Option/Alt keys and then select one of the four corners of our white circle. While still holding the keys down, click and drag inwards so that we are now reducing the white circle from the center.
Normally, if we were just holding down Shift, it would maintain the proportion of the shape but it would scale down from the corner rather than the center. This is a bit of a time-saver, as we dont have to try to center the shapes ourselves.

How To Create A Quarter
- A. Freehand method
- Before drawing a freehand quarter-circle for the first time, you must use the exact-size method to enable closed-shape drawing. If you do not, you will only get the curved line, not the whole the shape.Quarter-circle: Hold down the key on your keyboard, click and drag to draw a quarter-circle of the desired size.Quarter-elipse: Click and drag to draw a quarter-elipse of the desired size.
- B. Exact-size method
- Click once anywhere on your artboard to open the arc tool options dialogue.
Type in your desired dimensions for the radius of your quarter-circle, and select Closed from the Type drop-down. If your y-axis and x-values are equal, you will be drawing a quarter-circle, but if they differ, you will draw a quarter-ellipse.
Do Research And Get Inspired
Itâs wise to study your topic before you start drawing.
Look for some photos of your favorite leaves to use as a reference later in this tutorial.
But, of course, also look around you! You can take inspiration from your house plants, from your garden, or the trees in your local park. It’s a lot more fun than just surfing the internet, and itâs bound to get your creative juices flowing.

Use The 3d Tool In Illustrator
You can easily create a 3D effect in Adobe Illustrator. For example, if you wanted to draw a sphere in Illustrator, the 3D effect would be the way to go. Since Illustrator is a vector based program, the process of creating a 3D sphere is different than the process you’d use in Photoshop.
All you have to do to draw a sphere in Illustrator is to draw a circle and cut that circle into a half circle. Then add the 3D revolve effect and “presto”, you have a perfect sphere. You even have some control on the surface texture and the light source. The 3D effect in Illustrator is quite a handy tool. The following video tutorial takes a look at how to use the 3D effect to draw a sphere in Illustrator.

Trim Objects Using Clipping Masks
Clipping masks let you use an object to hide portions of other objects. For details, see Clipping masks.
Create the object you want to use as the mask. This object is called the clipping path. Only vector objects can be clipping paths.
Move the clipping path above the objects you want to mask in the stacking order.
Select the clipping path and the objects you want to mask.
Choose Object > Clipping Mask > Make.
To create a clipping path from the area where two or more objects overlap, group the objects first.
