Merging The Ends Of Both The Sides Of The Street

The end of the left side of the street should be drawn with diagonal lines, one from the top and one from the bottom of the building. This is because the viewer will only see the width of the buildings from his/her side.

The more narrow side of the street, which is the right side, should be ended by a building overlapping the vanishing point. Because, from the perspective, only the front side of the building will be visible and not anything else.

City Drawing Tonal Value Drawing Tips

Now with the line drawing for the city sketch in place, we start adding some basic tonal values! I start by putting in the general shadow values on the buildings. Try not to get distracted by small details. Simply look at the big picture and draw the general light and dark values that you see.

One very helpful tonal value drawing tip, is to squint your eyes while searching for basic values! Simplifying is much harder than it may seem at first. This is one big aspect where practicing simplifying while drawing will really impact your painting skills in a good way. When you start to simplify what you see your skills improve drastically.

Create An Interesting Composition

How To Draw A City Step By Step | City Drawing EASY

Of course you can just draw a straight on, eye-level-view replica of the building youre looking at, with the focal point around the middle of your page. This kind of composition works well for certain subjects and is a style in its own.

However, in most cases an angled view that is less straightforward and centred will be a better choice, especially for architecture. This avoids your final piece being too flat, symmetrical and, excuse the French, dull.

Instead, follow some of the examples from my above mentioned post Architecture-themed Art Prints that will Impress and Inspire you and see how creative the artists there were with their composition.

This quick sketch shows a very successful composition with the palatial building as focal point but the stairs on the right and courtyard on the left also drawing the eye and adding interest.

Even though we humans often draw things straight ahead at our standard eye-level, either when were standing upright or sitting straight, that is by no means a must.

For very tall buildings it can look amazing if you use a nice worms view , or, birds view, looking down from it onto other buildings. These kinds of angles can be very dramatic, or you can use them very subtly, depending on the effect youre after.

Watch All Skylines With Their Drawing Tutorials

I have made some video tutorials on how to draw skyline on Youtube, which you can refer to and can draw them easily within few minutes. Skyline drawing can be done at the ease of your couch, or while traveling in a train/plane, relaxing on the bed as it does not need a huge art studio type of set-up. You just bring your favorite pen, paper, and let down your creativity flows with your favorite travel memories.

I hope you loved to know about some of the most beautiful and best skylines in the world with their interesting facts and where to get the best views of them. Also, you can draw them by simple drawing techniques and you can create your handmade travel journal, a travel diary, or travel scrapbook. I would also love to know your favorite skyline from this post or your previous travel visits.

Add Trees And Background

Sketch five trees in front of the middle buildings using squiggly half circles around the top railing. Evenly space pairs of vertical lines on the sides of some of the buildings, as shown.

Use diagonal lines on the sides of the two tall middle buildings to continue the bands. Draw a few more buildings in the background. Give the tall narrow building on the left a second side using parallel lines connected to the front with diagonal lines. Complete the roof using two triangles.

When Is A Drawing Considered One

A drawing is considered as one point perspective when it has only one vanishing point. This type of perspective is used mainly for drawing images where the viewer must have a front-facing view.

One-point perspective is used typically to draw railways, streets, lengthy hallways, and housing complexes. The objects drawn in one point perspective should be made of two types of lines: lines parallel to the viewers sight as well as lines perpendicular to the viewers sight. All the parallel lines are supposed to converge at the vanishing point of the plane.

Also, a drawing in one-point perspective is composed of linear elements that only intersect each other in right angles. It is through considering all the above factors that we chose one-point perspective to draw a city street.

However, there are various other ways to draw a city street.

How do I know that? Because it wasnt my first choice either, when I reached that topic in my Sketching Project. Yet, here I am, writing blog posts about how awesome it is to draw buildings.

Much like with Still Lifes, sometimes it just takes an open mind and a bit of research to find that something you usually dont consider can make for a super interesting subject. So, before you dive deeper into the topic why not take a half hour or so and have a look at some fantastic architecture drawings and paintings?

Some places seem to have been built with urban sketchers in mind, like Victoria Street in Edinburghs Old Town.

You could go through the works of your favourite artists, quite often they have found at least some buildings worth their time. Van Gogh, da Vinci, Picasso, all of them will have something nice for you to study.

Or you can have a look at my post Architecture-themed Art Prints that will Impress and Inspire you, which features modern artists from Etsy, a website selling handmade things. All of these are skilfully done and extremely inspiring. No better way to get yourself in the mood.

City Drawing Sketch With Realistic Value Drawing Tips

I recently moved to downtown Seattle. For the past two years I have been living in the suburbs so it is a big change! After being inspired by the new location I decided to create a city drawing tutorial for you since I have access to some open city views! Drawing a city provides some opportunities to look at big large general shapes and work on simplifying.

If you are a painter dont leave! This drawing tutorial will help you to build your skills in creating a realistic sense of light. Values are extremely important in painting. Working on them with paper and graphite first will help you to create better paintings. As when you understand tonal values, you will be able to create a stronger sense of light and dark as a result.

Fill Out The Sky Between The Buildings

At this point in the painting, Im beginning to question the textured approach. Im definitely going to want to do another one of these city skylines later in a nontextured style.

For this step, we need to fill in the sky between the buildings. Since this is my first time doing a painting of this sort of style and subject matter, Im left questioning if there was a better way to do this.

While I like some of the swooping textures in the wide open sky, filling in the smaller parts between the buildings left much smaller texture details that arent as cool looking as the textures in the open sky.

The other challenge here is getting the colors right so they mesh with the sky above the buildings.

While we begin to stray from the colors depicted in the main skyline reference, it is a necessary evil to get the blend anywhere close to looking like it belongs.

You have to be careful to mix your colors right so it doesnt look like there is this blob of different colored material between the buildings and the open sky.

In my example, I wanted to try and make the sky brighter as that is how the gradient goes in the picture but a light blue mixed with the pink rose paint was the best way to get a color that actually went with what I have on the canvas already.

To apply it, we need to again work very carefully by loading the paint at the very tip of our pointed palette knife. I likely will need to come back in with some more black to touch up some of the buildings where I messed up.

“Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city, Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty.” – Petula Clark, “Downtown”

Big, bustling cities have become a part of the global culture. Some cities are iconic. Paris is known as the City of Love Tokyo is often called the Neon City. Other famous metropolises include London, New York, San Francisco, and Sydney. The buildings and landmarks of each city – such as the Eiffel Tower, the Golden Gate bridge, and the Statue of Liberty – are widely recognizable, giving to each a unique personal identity.

Culturally, cities have represented both good and evil in religious works, such as in the Bible. They have been the subject of written stories and in movies. One example of the city in film is that of Metropolis , based on a futuristic dystopian novel.

The cityscape is a popular image in art, especially photography. City landscapes at night are especially lauded, the city lights sparkling against a bedarkened sky. Many photographers use long exposures to capture “rivers” of vehicle headlights. Bokeh effects, or softening of light rings, are also used. Before the advent of photography, cityscapes were recorded in paintings.

    Finalizing The City Drawing Sketch

How To Draw: A Simple City Scape

Now we reach the end of the city drawing sketch! I work at making the sky reflect what I see in real life by making some areas a little bit darker and creating a large white cloud at the top portion of the drawing sketch.

In addition, I darken areas that need to be darkened. Especially the dark front facing walls of the buildings on the right. Making the areas that need to be darker creates more dimension within the drawing.

Divide The Big Shapes Into Smaller Shapes

This is where your sketch begins to take form, where things start to look like what youre actually drawing.

When youve got your basic, big shapes down, correct them where needed, then divide them into smaller shapes. For example, for a standard house thatd mean adding in the roof, the position of the windows and doors.

Youll also want to start indicating big-ish objects like trees, fences, cars or background shapes.

In its essence this sketch of medieval-style houses consists of triangles, rectangles and a few ovals for the bushes and trees.

Use the vanishing points as guides as long as you need them, theyll help you confirm what you think you see and figure out how far your eye can be trusted. Of course you can also always use your pencil to measure angles .

When you divide very complex subjects into smaller shapes, such as Greek temples with all those columns or Gothic cathedrals with their elaborate ceilings, add some rough detail as you go along.

That might be a person at the foot of a column or a stem of ivy curling around a small part of it. Itll work as an anchor point and prevent you forgetting where in your subject these lines and shapes were and get all confused with the complexity of it.

Depending on your medium you can also start adding some paint to your work.

    Work Out The Perspective

How to Draw a City in 2 Point Perspective Easy Step by Step

Once youve decided on a subject, medium, style and view youll want to work out what perspective rules youll need to apply in order to draw it correctly. Of course it helps if you know a little about perspective.

You can have a look at my post One-point perspective: How it works and how to use it for your Art to get you started.

The easiest way to work out the perspective of a subject from your point of view is to make a quick thumbnail sketch .

Just sketch your building very roughly and find where the horizon line is . Then look for convergence lines and vanishing points .

Are you dealing with one-point, two-point or multi-point perspective? Is there any atmospheric perspective? Are any parts of your subject overlapping other parts?

This tall building is practically made for a nice three-point perspective composition to emphasise its height, towering above the viewer.

The reason why I emphasise working out the perspective before you begin your drawing is that sometimes our eyes and brain make us believe we see something when in reality its not actually quite like that.

For example, we are prone to setting the horizon too high and having angles too steep. If you know where your vanishing points are you can use your pencil or brush to quickly measure an angle if youre not sure.
