Draw The Fur For The Inner Area Of The Face
For this step add some fur patterns for the inner part of the wolfs face.
If you are going to be drawing the clumps using pencil over top of the construction lines you may have to erase the construction lines a small part at a time and then add in the clumps. Alternatively you can also lighter the entire line with an erase to the point where its barely visible so that you can keep it in the final drawing.
Draw the fur as follows:
- Forehead as a set of stacked up small curves
- Areas below eyes; a sort of swirl that follows the shapes defined earlier
- Above eye wave shapes random clumps that point in the general direction of the wave
- Around eyes some small hints of fur above the eyes and near their inner ends
- Inner parts of face varying length small strokes pointing slightly downwards and to the sides of the face

Go Over The Drawing With Ink And/or Color
To finish your drawing in ink, pull out your favorite pen and slowly trace over your final drawing. Once youve gone along all of the graphite lines, consider adding texture to some of the white areas of the illustration to make it pop. Hatching and drawing dots are two easy ways to cover blank space in an interesting way.
Finally, once you’ve given the ink ample time to dry, erase any remaining pencil lines. Congrats! You now have a dramatic illustration of a wolf howling at the moon.

Adding The First Construction Lines
Draw a line down the middle of the oval, from top to bottom, and then, about one-third below the top of the oval, draw a line across. This crossline will help you to decide where to draw the eyes and eyebrows, and will also give an indication as to where to center the snout and the ears. Once these features are centered, you will find it much easier to find the best position for the wolfs mouth on your sketch.

How To Draw Wolf Fur
A one-piece pajama skin is what makes felines look cat-like. A wolf can be created by following some other rule: a special direction of fur over the body. It may look complicated at first, but if you draw it a few times, youll see its quite easy to remember.
Of course, you dont need to draw all the strands every time. Just use the rules to create outlines of all the areas. The most important elements that should be stressed are the neck mane, the shoulder cape, the butt cape, and the bushy tail. The rest can be stylized in your preferred way. In fact, if you outline the most important areas, you may not need to draw the rest of fur at all!
Wolves look very intimidating when theyre so furry, but theyre not always this way. Their summer coat is less impressive, making them more similar to a German shepherd. The areas of fur are still visible, but you can draw them with subtler lines.
Structure The Front Section Of The Body
Follow the underdrawing to structure the neck, and add a small hump on top of the shoulder section. Draw a line that comes down to the elbow with a curl at the bottom. Mirroring the curl, draw the shoulder and section it off from where the legs starts. The leg tapers down to the wrist, connecting to the tube-shaped hand jutting forward. Then attach the paw formed like the shape of a puck. Draw out the chest located behind the arm, right under the shoulders. Repeat the same thing for the leg behind.

Shaping The Facial Features
Draw softer, curved ear shapes over the construction lines. These shapes do not need to touch the lines of the oval, nor be perfectly symmetrical at this stage. When we add the fur later, the wolf features will become more realistic.
Next, we will draw the shape of the mouth, starting with the top lip curling up from the top of the bottom horizontal line, widening to just below the snout. Add detail with a hint of the bottom lip on the bottom line to emphasize this important facial feature.
Add The Whiskers & Finish The Drawing
To finish the drawing you can give the wolf some whiskers. Generally these are fairly short and thin when compared to other animals such as cats. Draw them with just a few curved lines around the bottom outer sides of the snout.
Once you are done you should have a finished line drawing of the wolfs head.

Interesting Facts About Wolves
Wolves hunt other animals for food. Their diet consists of moose, deer, and bison, among other animals. They always hunt in packs, never by themselves. Packs can be as small as two wolves or as large as 30, but they are usually made up of 6 to 8 wolves.
Did you know?
- On average, wolves live until they are 6 or 8 years old. They sometimes live until they are 13 years old.
- Wolves can sense other animals up to a mile away.
- Wolves have webbed toes that help them swim up to 8 miles at a time.
- Wolves can run as fast as 40 miles per hour, only for short distances.
- Howling is the way wolves communicate with each other. They howl to warn each other of predators, to find each other when they are alone, or to meet up when they are ready to go hunting.
Wolves have a sense of family. Their packs are made of a mother, father, and their offspring. The mother and father mate for life and take care of their offspring the way human parents take care of their children. The gray wolf and the red wolf are the only species that live in North America.

Here are some facts about Wolves that you might find interesting.
Start drawing the wolf by following each of the 8 steps in sequence.
Step 1: Begin by drawing the forehead of the Wolf.
Step 2: Draw the first ear.
Step 3: Draw the snout.
Step 4: Sketch the upper neck and lower back towards the tail.

Sketch The Basic Shape Of The Head
Start off by drawing the head as an oval tilted to the left about 45 degrees. Connect the muzzle pointing down in the same direction, almost as long as the oval. The bottom of the muzzle goes flat across, half way to the oval just below it. Block in the shape of the ear by drawing a line as the base of the ear on the head, forming a triangle above that’s slanted forward and curved in the back.

Find The Length Of The Neck And Body
Locate the base of the neck by measuring the length of the oval head two times sideways. Relative to the body, a wolf’s head stands lower than a dog’s head, so make sure to draw the neck angled lower. The length of the back is three times the length of the oval and neck. From the neck, connect a straight line across to indicate the back.
Start With Reference Photos
Study your subject before you start any step-by-step drawing tutorials. Wolves have a distinctive appearance that sets them apart even from more wolfish dogs like huskies. Before you begin drawing wolves, examine some reference photos to get a sense of their features and proportions. They look like theyre constantly looking out for themselves, says artist Lucas Elliott. Note the wolves long legs, the thick neck scruff, and the leaner torso. A wild animal is typically going to have a more severe and angular look because it has less fat, artist Jonathan Case agrees. Emphasize those angles when youre drawing a wolf.
Even the body posture of a wolf differs from that of a dog. Wolves carry themselves like apex predators, much more upright than dogs. They move a little more elegantly, says artist Megan Levens. When shes drawing a wolfs body, she says, I think about what this animal is designed to do and focus on those features. So the legs are designed to run fast and catch prey. The jaws are strong to capture prey and kill it. The ears are perked up to stay alert.
To gain an even better understanding of what the lines of a wolf should look like, practice sketching the basic shapes of some of your reference photos.

Place The Facial Features
Position the eyes with their top end slightly overlapping the horizontal line from the the first step. You can also use the same line to help you make sure both eyes are on the same level.
From above the eyelids and transition these into two wave like lines that go to the outer sides of the head. These will be used later to help draw some of the wolfs fur patterns.
Finally draw the nose .
At this stage draw the mouth with just two straight angled lines from the bottom part of the snout curve towards the nose .

The Meaning And Symbolism Of The Wolf
Humans are likely to have associated wolves with symbolism since the early days of interaction between them. The symbols and their meanings have changed over the centuries, depending on the development of humans. The wolf was often negatively associated with darkness, aggression, and Chthonic powers, and positively because of their intelligence, excellent hunting skills, protecting their young, pack loyalty, and a well-defined social structure.
Wolves are believed to be closely linked to the sun, moon, light, and spirit. Some cultures believe wolves are guides to the dead and linked to Hades, God of the underworld.
Wolves have a history of being portrayed as evil in childrens stories such as the hungry wolf in The Three Little Pigs. The phrase, the wolf at the door was a symbol of the fear of hunger and starvation, which was widespread during the Great Depression in America and Europe. Additionally, the tale of Little Red Riding Hood may have been the inspiration for symbolizing the wolf as a sexual predator in the 20th Century and later as a symbol of male aggression.
Although legends of werewolves go as far back as Greek Mythology, the concept was embraced by more recent popular culture a man turning into a wolf every night of the full moon. Brought to life in comic books and horror movies, the legend of the man-wolf lives on.

First Step A Framework For Your Wolf
Start off your cartoon wolf by drawing three circles just like Ive done. Actually, its the top one that is a circle while the bottom two are ovals.
Each of these shapes the circle and the two ovals, represent the three core parts of the wolfs body the head, the chest, and the behind. Because its a cartoon, and because the wolf is sittingthis arrangement of shapes is much more simple in nature.
Now, what about those lines between the shapes? Well, its these lines extending right through the tail that are actually the spine of your cartoon wolf. Draw them in to connect each shape and to serve as a “line of action” for your drawing.
Now one other thing to do is draw the snout. The snout is a distinct feature. Draw it as a circle located within the circle at the top that makes up the head of your wolf. Draw it so that its off-centered, positioned down and to the right slightly.
All is good then? OK, lets move on and draw in a few more guidelines
