Aliens are frequent denizens of science fiction, from Star Trek to Star Wars to Disney’s Toy Story, and the search for extraterrestrial life is carried out by some serious scientists. This, however, has not always been the case.

Aliens are often linked with sightings of UFOs, or unidentified flying objects. These sightings generally did not occur prior to man’s experimentation with flight. One of the first UFO sightings occurred in 1947, when a businessman reported seeing several crescent shaped objects flying alongside his small airplane. A local newspaper mistakenly reported that they were saucer shaped, thus the term, “flying saucer.”

Scroll down for a downloadable PDF of this tutorial.

UFO sightings increased with time during the 1950s and 1960s, the U.S. government recorded more than 12,000 such sightings. Most were eventually discovered to be astronomical phenomena or aircraft, with only six percent remaining unidentified.

During this time period, supposed aliens began to be referred to as “little green men.” This description had long been used to describe mythical creatures such as goblins and gremlins, the latter of which were said to reek havoc on airplanes and other mechanical devices.

First Design A Simple Framework And Draw Your Alien

Similar to the recent string of cartoon people lessons Woman, Man, Girl and Boy designing a humanoid cartoon alien is again, quite similar. As mentioned above, the one difference that really stands out is that drawing a humanoid version will be much easier!

Take a look at this

As you can see, the original framework is a little bit distorted in comparison to say, a cartoon boy. The head is bigger, the neck and arms are longer, and the legs seem somewhat shorter.

Actually, its quite often that when drawing a monster you can refer back to how to draw people. There are many humanoid monsters vampires, werewolves, zombies, skeletons and the list goes on. The key is to be able to manipulate and distort the natural form of the human, to give you something truly monstrous! just like this alien.

Start Drawing Basic Outline Of The Head

The most straightforward approach to beginning your drawing od an alien is to draw an elongated oval shape. This will represent the outline of your alien, which could be altered at a later stage.

Draw with a continuous faint line when you draw this shape as this will cut out any unnecessary erasing of drawn lines if you make a mistake. Due to the fact that an oval is a simple regular shape, you can also add additional details to the head of the alien at a later stage.

Finish Off Your Alien Drawing With Some Color

No one has ever seen an alien in real life so that means that when imagining what an alien might look like theres room for a lot of imagination.

This is a step where you should really let your creativity run wild and show us what you can do!

Anything goes when it comes to colors for this image. You could go for something incredibly bright and vibrant along with some crazy patterns for one approach.

Alternatively, you could just as easily use some darker and more muted colors for a different effect.

You can also have some fun with the mediums you use. For this image, it might be fun to use some different mediums together!

Maybe you could use some acrylic paints and colored pens for the alien, yet use some watercolors and crayons for the background.

This is just one of many options at your disposal, so how will you color in your picture?

Adding Surface Details To Your Alien

After you have created an initial layer of color onto the surface of your drawing, you may want to add further detail over the initial layers of colored pencil.

  • Consider adding texture in the form of drawn scales or patterns on the head and body of the alien.
  • Accentuate the head and the eyes of the alien by adding layers of shadow onto the forehead of the alien. This will give the head a bulky appearance and make it have more of a visual impact.
  • Texture can also be applied to your drawing by creating small areas of any area shadow next to a scales or patterns you have drawn.

Creating An Alien Drawing Using Simple Curved Lines

How to Draw Toy Story – Alien – Easy Pictures to Draw

Creating a cute alien drawing can be done quite easily. You can choose to draw green characters with big antennas and large teeth. You can simply draw a monster and add a spaceship next to it.

But these creatures are also often depicted as being human like. They are colored in grey and made with large eyes. That’s the kind of cartoon character we are going to create for this drawing lesson.

Do you like this illustration? Good news! It can be yours now! Learn how 🙂

Step 1

First, open your vector application and draw the head and the body of the character. Since the feet are attached to the body, make sure that this part is also added.

Notice how the head is similar to a human head. You can see the jaw, the chin and the top of the head being round and cute. The legs are small and narrow while the feet are tiny and pointed near the end. The body is not too large and almost made of a rectangle.

Step 2

Next, you can start adding details on the face. Aliens are often depicted as having large black pupils. So it might be a good idea to draw large eyes and large pupils. You can also create the mouth using a single line. Another line added below the mouth can be used to enhance the chin. You can draw both arms and hands using a simple design.

A single line added near the top of the legs and below the stomach can give more volume to the character and create a small separation between these two parts of the body.
