Pumpkins just have it all when it comes to art projects. The built in ridges help show off their dimension so they dont look like flat circles, and the bright orange color is so festive to look at.
This sample shows that you dont need fancy art supplies when it comes to coloring your pumpkin. I used Prang® crayons, pressed really hard to get the most pigment, and overlapped for a soft edge. Some crayons seem to blend a little better than others, and Ive found the Prang brand to be good for that.

Next Erase The Guide Lines
Once youre happy with what you drew in step 2, you can go over the pumpkin outline in pen or darker pencil if you used a lighter pencil at first.
Once you have it drawn in, you can erase the guiding oval from step 1 as we wont be needing it anymore.
Before you erase, make sure that the ink for the rest of the drawing is dry if you used a pen. If you erase too early, you may smudge the wet ink. For this reason, patience is key at this stage!

First Step A Guideline For Drawing Pumpkin Faces
To begin, go ahead and sketch out a nice, simple guideline just like the one you see in the example. If youre sketching your design directly onto a pumpkin, you can omit the circle as the pumpkin itself already forms one!
The cross is the most essential part as divides the face into four equal and opposite quadrants, allowing you to carefully map out and sketch in the eyes, nose, mouth, etc. Tip: use some sort of marking that will clean off easily if youre drawing directly onto your pumpkin.
All set then? Great! Lets draw some pumpkin faces!
This Needs To Be On Top
Im very messy today. For heavens sakes. Okay. Okay, so thats good for now. We have it all blocked in. Now if youve watched before, you know that Im gonna fill these all in with white, and because Im going to go and paint them, I dont want them to just be solid. So Im just going and clicking on that layer and filling what I had colored just to be white. And for the leaves, cause I dont wanna go and drop each one, Im just gonna click on the plus sign, click on the layer, click clipping mask. Do that, and then just merge down. A little faster that way. Okay, so now everything is solid underneath, so if I turn off my background layer, you can see its like that. And now I can go and do some painting. So lets start with the bear, Im just gonna add the plus sign, add a clipping mask, go and grab this brown here, and Im going to go to, Im gonna go What am I gonna do? Im gonna go into the painting. I cant see anymore. Youre gonna get the spectra, put it at about 35. Just fill him in, and the clipping mask is just gonna make sure that it all stays on that one layer.

Draw In The Start Of The Pumpkin
Now that we have the penciled oval as a guide, we can start to draw in the beginning of the pumpkin drawing.
Using both your pencil oval and the reference picture as a guide, you can start to draw in the outline of the pumpkin using some curved lines.
It should be much easier to do if you start from left to right and copy the lines that you see in the picture closely as you draw.
This part could take a bit of practice, so you could always use a light pencil to draw in the outlines and then go over them in pen when youre happy with how it looks.
