Interesting Facts About Dandelions

Dandelion puff tutorial

Dandelions are more commonly a weed. They spread by releasing seeds into the wind after the flowering is done. Dandelions grow low to the ground and have tough roots that make it hard to pull up in flower beds. Dandelions are mostly a mass of spiny leaves and long sticky stems. On top of those stems are yellow tufts that hold the pollen like an ink pad. The flower of a dandelion measure 2 to 7 centimeters across. They grow all over the world and dont look to be going anywhere.

Did you know?

  • An old superstition says that if you touch a dandelion you will wet the bed.
  • Dandelions are used as a symbol of the sky. The yellow tuft symbolizes the sun, the fluffy white seed head is the moon, and the seeds symbolize stars as they drift away with the wind.
  • There are 30 species of Dandelions.
  • Dandelions are used as dye for clothing.
  • Dandelions open up in sunlight and close up at night time.
  • A seed can travel 5 miles on the wind before it touches the ground.

Activity: Give the gardeners a break at your school. Send your class out to pick Dandelions. Gather them all up and teach the kids how to make dandelion chains and jewelry.

What Does A Dandelion Flower Mean

Not only do dandelions look cute but they also represent quite a few things which make it a great addition to lots of your Bullet Journal orart pages.

Here are a few of my favorite dandelion meanings and symbolisms.

  • Travel and adventure. Because the seeds of the dandelion travel fair and wide on the breeze they make a great travel journal doodle.
  • Rising above challenges and difficulties. Dandelions can grow nearly anywhere and often in really difficult conditions. If you are going through challenges in your life a dandelion doodle would be a great symbol to add to your bullet journal vision board to remind yourself that you will rise above them.
  • Wishes Fulfilled. We all know that blowing a dandelion seeds means you get to make a wish. I love adding a dandelion drawing on my goals pages.
  • Happiness. With their bright color before seeding and warm weather growing, dandelions symbolize happiness and joy. They make a great theme for spring and summer spreads.

Revealed: The Extraordinary Flight Of The Dandelion

Dandelion seeds float thanks to a previously unknown source of lift.

The English poet and artist William Blake was no fan of the reductionism of Isaac Newton. True discovery, and therefore knowledge, Blake insisted in his poem Auguries of Innocence, was to be found in the everyday, where a world could be seen in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower.

Today, we know of exotic states of matter that can slow the vast speed of light to a mere sprint. And astronomers have spotted more than 3,800 planets in more than 2,800 distant stellar systems: a staggering rate of discovery, given that the first confirmed detection of a planet orbiting another star similar to the Sun was as recent as 1995.

None of this should blind us to the fact that as Blake suggested some of the most surprising discoveries come from the world of the familiar. No one has visited an exoplanet, but most people know what a dandelion looks like. This flower is found worldwide. And, as many a child discovers to their delight, when a dandelion sets seed, the flower turns into a mass of seeds known as a dandelion clock. Each seed is suspended from a parachute-like stalk easily released by a puff of breath.

What Is A Dandelion Puff Called

4/5dandelion

Likewise, people ask, what are dandelion seeds called?

And, as many a child discovers to their delight, when a dandelion sets seed, the flower turns into a mass of seeds known as a dandelion clock. Each seed is suspended from a parachute-like stalk easily released by a puff of breath.

Beside above, why do dandelion seeds have fluffy tops? Dandelion SeedThe white tuft at the top of each stem acts as a parachute enabling the seed to travel on the breeze or be picked up when brushed by a passing animal or person, thereby reproducing the dandelion. It is this distinct fluffy sphere of the dandelion which enables it to reproduce.

One may also ask, what are the parts of a dandelion?

At the base of a Dandelion head is a group of green bracts called the involucre. Dandelions have only one type of flowers, ray florets. Some members of the Aster family, for example daisies, have ray and disk florets. Ligules are the petals of the dandelion flower.

What are the stages of a dandelion?

The life cycle of a dandelion has three different stages: germination, flowering and reproduction. The germination stage is concerned with the seed taking root and starting to grow.

How To Paint A Dandelion

Dandelions seem to be popping up everywhere especially on artwork and cards. Here is a simple way to paint your own using a pen, a dab of paint and a small paintbrush.

Dandelions are incredibly easy to paint and draw and the best part about them is that they don’t hold a perfect shape.

Feel free to use my Amazon suggested links below:

All you’ll need for this craft:

First, make a long stem leaning towards the center of the board.

Then make lines coming off the tip of the stem to make a circle… these do not need to be all the same length so don’t worry about perfection. This will be the flower.

Add a second dandelion by drawing another stem and another flower. Darken any lines as necessary.

Now draw little lines coming from the flower to the edge of the board. These will be the seeds in the breeze. You want a slight curve in these little lines and want them going in different directions.

Next is to paint the little whisp-y things. Not sure if they have a more scientific name… The part of the flower that you blow off to make a wish. Here is a picture of the brush I used.

Just dab some paint onto the paper to have a couple of testers. You don’t want too much paint or it will just look like a glob. If just enough paint is on the brush it will resemble the little whisps.

Carefully dab along the outside of the flowers. Take turns between doing heavy dabs and light dabs.

Now do a dab of paint on one side of those little lines you made earlier.

By Step Instructions For Drawing A Dandelion

1. Begin drawing the flower’s narrow petals. For each petal, extend two parallel curved lines. Connect the lines on one end using a short, curved line. Notice that the sides of the petals connect to one another in sharp points.

2. Some distance from the first set of petals, draw a second set. Again, use sets of parallel lines and connect them using short, curved lines on the ends. Connect the petals to one another, allowing the lines to meet in sharp points. These petals should resemble a mirror image of the first.

3. Next, draw additional petals to connect the existing sets of petals. For each petal, use a set of parallel lines connected on the end by short curved lines. The petals should connect to each other in sharp points.

4. Fill in petals between the existing petals. Use parallel lines and “V” shaped lines to craft the petals.

8. Craft the leaf using curved lines. Extend each squiggly line from the tip of the leaf vein to the middle of the leaf. Connect with the leaf vein to enclose the shape. Repeat on each side.

9. Then, draw the spiky portions of the leaf by forming small, curved triangles. Use the leaf vein for one side of each triangle, along with two curved lines for each.

10. Color your dandelion. Dandelion flowers are yellow in color with deep green leaves and stems.

How To Draw A Dandelion: Easy Step By Step Instructions

This our easy dandelion drawing step by step tutorial in one picture. Below I break each step down and give you my best tips and tricks.

How to draw a dandelion

As I am not very good at freehand shapes my first step was to draw around the base of a cup with a pencil to get a circle I could use as a guideline.

You may decide to skip this step altogether, free draw a circle or even use a compass.

Next, I drew a stem and center of the dandelion using a thick pen.

The next step is to create the shape of your dandelion.

You can make this as simple or as intricate as you like. If you start with just a few points, you can always add more later.

Now you need to fill in your dandelion.

To be honest, it was always this part I thought would be tricky but just take a look at a simple dandelion seed doodle by itself and you can see just how easy it is to draw.

So all you need to do next is add a seed doodle at the end of your dandelions drawing.

I ended up adding more shape as it looked a little bare and I wanted a fluffy drawing of dandelion.

I also added a few seeds blowing in the breeze for movement and interest.

The last step is to erase the pencil line and you have finished your dandelion drawing, easy!

In this lesson I will show you how to draw a dandelion. But first I would like to say that it is not just a flower with fluffy prickles on its head that grows everywhere. It is also a very useful plant. Every old lady will be extremely happy if you bring her a bunch of yellow flowers.

As it turns out you can eat them. Though, I have never tried them. Let me tell you more:

  • You can make jam from these flowers. It might be tasty.
  • You can also make wine from them.
  • If you fry its root you can brew it as coffee. You could even forge instant coffee. Who knows what we get in supermarkets. So be careful!
  • We can make soup with their leaves. They are as green as cabbage and not bitter.
  • The tincture of this flower excites appetite, that even semolina will seem the most delicious dish.

Attention: culinary experiments conduct only with experienced chefs! But you can draw these flowers any time you want.

Dandelions are perennial flowers – flowers that return year after year – but are often considered weeds. The fluffy, floating seeds and rapid growth habits allow dandelions to spread quickly – much to the chagrin of homeowners who take pride in an immaculate green lawn.

Dandelions have many overlapping petals, similar in shape to the Chrysanthemum or carnation.

Did you know, though, that dandelions haven’t always been considered a weed? Early European settlers brought the plant to the Americas as a food source. The yellow blossoms can be eaten raw, fried, or made into a bitter wine.

The leaves can be eaten as salad, and the roots can be dried, ground, and steeped to provide a coffee substitute. Dandelion roots and leaves have also been used for medicinal purposes.

Today, many children enjoy picking dandelions and blowing on the ripe seed heads, sending the winged seeds aloft. Some folklore holds that if you make a wish and then blow all the seeds from a dandelion in a single breath, that wish is bound to come true. Sometimes, dandelions are used as symbols of love.
