ThoughtCo/Helen South

On a blank sheet of paper, begin by sketching a reference line to indicate the center of your dog’s face. This is called “blocking in” the features, and it is the first step in any drawing. Make sure the reference line runs between the ears and eyes and through the middle of your dog’s nose.

Check that the angle matches your source photo. Notice that there’s a slight outward curve in the line through the dog’s eyes. They aren’t completely forward on the head.

Next, sketch the curve at the tip of the nose, the mouth, and chin. Pay attention to the spot where the plane changes here as well.

Now that you’ve blocked in the basic shape, you should be able to keep the features lined up as you draw.

Adding Features With Simple Shapes

Now we will go in and draw the more detailed features of the dog. Even the smaller parts of a dog that appear complex can be loosely captured with a combination of shapes and lines. Lets break down each feature into simple silhouettes while thinking about the end effect.

Parts of the head

First, capture the shape of the jaw. Draw the dogs snout roughly in the shape of a skewed rectangle, then add a line to separate the upper and lower parts. A golden retrievers snout has sagging skin and an upturned mouth that gives the impression of a smile. It also features a sudden drop at the corners of the mouth. When viewed from the side, the snout should be divided by an S-shape in the lower part of the skewed rectangle.

When drawing the snout from the front, draw a gentle W-shaped line. In the middle of the line, draw another line connecting up to the nose. Make sure the corners of the mouth line arch out.

The golden retrievers eyes are a little droopy, which also makes them look friendly and gentle. Draw the eyes in a triangle so that you can capture the droopy shape.

The ears attach to the back of the head and flop down towards the front. Try to capture the sagging appearance of the ears with triangles or squares that cover the sides of the dogs face.

Parts of the body

Once all of the body parts are in place, start rounding the straight lines and corners. The lifelike silhouette is now completed.

Sketch another layer of tones to build up the texture of the fur. Replace the outline of the ear with short strokes to resemble the hair on the edge. Use a 6B for the darkest areas.

Repeat this process for the other ear. Sketch a base layer of shading for the ear. Use short pencil strokes along the edge of the ear to create that furry look. Build up the layers of fur on the ear with additional shadows.

Okay, we are almost done. Its time to add the finishing touches. Look for opportunities to make lighter values stand out better by creating darker values adjacent to them. Shade The Dogs Mouth And Snout

Trace over the vertical line extending from the nose to the mouth. Sketch fur over the outlines going down each side of the mouth. Trace over the outline for the top lip too. Then with a 6B pencil, shade the inside of the mouth very dark.

Similar to the spot above the nose, this dog has a large spot or birthmark covering the area between the nose and mouth. Sketch its outline as well as some texture details on each side of the vertical line joining the nose and mouth.

To shade this spot, Im starting with a general base layer of diagonal strokes to cover the entire surface. Then, Im going over it again with a second layer of shading. However, this time my strokes are shorter to more closely resemble hair. Finally, use darker tones to sharpen the edges just under the nose and around the mouth.

Use a light touch to sketch the white fur on the sides of the snout. The lower left area of the snout should have much darker fur. Sketch the fur under the dogs mouth. Use a mix of shadows and lines coming downward from the mouth. You may notice that the right side of the snout does not have the dark patch of fur that was found on the other side.

Draw Guidelines For The Dogs Facial Features

How to Draw A dog head || Easy Pencil Drawing

Lets first see how to draw the head of a dog. Start with an HB pencil and a rough sketch of a circle for the dogs head. Next, sketch a vertical line and a horizontal line for some facial guidelines. There should be an ever so slight curve to each of these lines due to the tilt of the dogs head.

Plan the placement of the eyes. They should be approximately an equal distance from the center. Then, sketch the shape of the snout. Extend the snout below the circle and make the bottom parallel to the horizontal guideline on the circle.

Now lets work on developing the shape of the dogs eyes. Although this dog has some large eyes and very round eyeballs, the shape of the skin surrounding the eyes is very angular. They almost resemble pentagons, but they still have some curvature.

Start sketching the brow on the side of the face next to the dogs right eye. Thatll be on our left side. Then sketch the outline of the nose. Pay attention to placement in relation to the surrounding features. For example, the left edge of the nose is a little to the right of the dogs right eye. Similarly, there is more space between the dogs nose and his left eye due to the turn of his head.

Working With Drawing Guides

The best way to get students off to a good start to any drawing project is to show them how to use guides as a reference point.

You may have noticed that all of the tutorials;on this site have center guides that are showing as both a vertical line;and a horizontal line. If students make lines like those on their;own;paper, before drawing, they will have some extra help in seeing where to begin their drawing.

For instance, as seen in Step 1 below, the;sketch of this dog face starts on the center line, halfway down the the;top;box. A large curve;is drawn that ends half way down the center of the;bottom;box.

Drawing skills are all about getting the size and placement of lines on paper, so having some visual reference point to get started, will always help anyone learn how to be a little more accurate.

So does that mean students need to use their pencil to draw big fat lines down the center of their paper before they start? Goodness no, please dont! That will most likely be hard to erase and distract from any finished art. No, simply fold the paper in half both ways, make a crease, and unfold. The beauty is that by the time the drawing is done and colored in, the creases will disappear.

And now, on to our drawing project.

Make Construction Sketch Of The Dog

As with drawing just about anything you should start your drawing of the dog by first getting its overall proportions. Do an overall very light rough sketch of the shape of the dog. Only include the major parts such as the head , body, legs and tail. Leave out the smaller details for the next step.

You can use basic geometrical shapes where appropriate to help you get the proportions. For example the head is close to a circle and the ears are close to triangles.

Though the sketch stage may look very rough its probably the most important step in the drawing process.;As you draw make sure that all of the dogs body parts are the right size in relation to one another.

If you start drawing everything separately or from the smaller details you may later find that different parts of the drawing are too big, too long or too short in comparison to one another. This may lead to you having to start over or having to erase a large part of your drawing.

Draw The Dogs Ears And Nose

The bottom tip of the ear should align with the bottom of the nose. Also, the pointy side of the ear that sticks out is aligned with the upper portion of the eye. Draw a curved line from the bottom tip. Sketch the outline for the brow. Draw the upper edge of the ear from the outer tip to the brow. A little higher, draw a flap connecting the ear to the head.

Sketch a guideline from the first ear to locate the connection for the other ear. Then, sketch the brow of the dogs left eye. Draw the side curvature of the dogs face and the edge of the ear along the side. The lower tip of the ear is slightly aligned with the first ear and the nose. Use the outer tip of the first ear and the top of the dogs left eye to locate the outer tip of this ear. Use a pencil to check the angle. Connect the ear at the head. This preliminary sketch of the dog ears is the first step in learning how to draw them.

Draw a vertical line separating the nose into two parts. Then, sketch the nostril on our right side. Pay attention to the size of the nostril as well as the shape. Repeat this process with the other nostril. Try to match the angles of the outline of the nostrils correctly in relation to the angles of the nose outline.
