In this next step we will complete the volumes that leave the circle. In the bulldog, the only thing that is outside are already the ears, so we also make a generic layout of the shape of the ears trying to find the proportion and point. In this way we are completing the base with which we will continue working with our cartoon of a dog.

Drawing Of The Final Cartoon

We now move on to the stage where we already define the limits of the cartoon. I didnt say it before, but this could already be a level of completion. In fact, if you remove the baselines we have done so far, we would have a black and white dog drawing. In this step you have to make all the details of the eyes, the nose, the folds that produce the ears, the folds of the neck and others.

The time you spend watching cute dogs will heal your heart. In particular, dogs are attractive because their facial expressions and poses are human-like and their emotions are rich. I will introduce how to draw such a simple animal, a dog, from a combination of simple figures.;Draw the dog on the whole sheet of paper, so it will be easier for you to draw small details and a large picture always looks more impressive than a small one.

First, lets make a sketch that captures the whole thing. Sketches are done to understand shapes such as contours, surface orientation and three-dimensional structure, light and shade, and color tones.

There are various methods, but this time I will first draw a motif with a combination of circles. Replacing the shape with a circle is the simplest and easiest approach. This method can be applied regardless of the motif or art style.

In the center of the line, draw the largest circle. It is not necessary to draw it perfectly flat, you see in my drawing it is also uneven.

Draw another circle next to it, and the one that will be the dogs head is slightly smaller in diameter than the lower one.

The diagonal line can now be removed with an eraser and draw the joint markings for the paw and the lower parts of the three paws since the fourth paw will not be visible.

Connect these lines with another chin line. The ears and tail of the dog, I think, you will draw yourself, without comment.

Like the eyes, the mouth can convey a lot of emotion, like happiness, sadness, excitement, and displeasure. Drawing mouths can be tricky since everyones mouth is different, the right shapes to use depend on the facial expression, and the shading can change based on the lighting. Fortunately, once you learn how to draw a basic mouth, either closed or open with teeth showing, youll be able to make adjustments depending on who youre drawing or what expression you want to convey.

Next Give Your Dog Face Drawing Some Ears

Your cute dog needs some ears, so lets add some for this part of our guide on how to draw a dog face!

Our dog is going to have some big, floppy ears, and as you can see in the reference picture they start from near the top of the head.

They extend all the way down the head, and you could make them even a bit longer and floppier if you want to!

How To Do It

  • Start With The Mouth;To begin, you will need to draw an oval with flatter sides to make the mouth. Make sure not to make it too thin as we will need to fit the rest of the mouth inside this oval.;
  • Put On The Nose;Next you need to draw in the nose, which will be a triangular shape with soft rounded edges.;
  • Add The Head; Now you will want to draw an upside down U shape on top of the mouth you drew in step one. This will be the head of the dog, so make sure theres space for the eyes. This could take up most of the width of the mouth but can be however you like!
  • Draw In The Cute Droopy EarsConnect the head to the mouth by starting at the top right of the head and loop down around the middle of the mouth.
  • Give Them A Mouth;Add in two J shapes back to back to make the snout of the mouth. Simple!
  • Finish Off The Face; Finally, draw in two circles for the eyes.
  • Add Some Front Legs;Draw two sets of parallel lines next to each other for the legs and add two rounded boxes at the bottom for their paws.
  • Time To Add The Body;Draw in a circular shape from the neck downwards and across the ankles and back up to the neck on the other side.
  • Lastly, Add The Feet and Tail!;On each side of the hips, add in semi circles for their feet. Then a tail between the body and the foot.
  • Now that its finished, you can colour in the dog however you like! If youre unsure where to start, you can make the body a mid-brown, the ears a dark brown and the mouth a beige.

We Start With The Basic Forms

This is a tip that will be useful for any type of drawing you are going to do, when it comes to organic bodies. You have to train yourself to learn how to make extractions of the forms, because every element of real life can be summed up in basic easy ways, which determine the basis from which we can begin to develop that drawing.

In the case of the dog that we started to make, we can deduce that the shape that directs the head is a circle, and that is where we begin our work.

    Dog Sketches

The first step in how to draw dogs is to establish the basic shape . As you can see its a fairly simple shape.

The dog’s face is almost shaped like an upside-down bicycle seat. Then you tack the ears on to that.

When you are preparing your dog sketches, the eyes and the nose are the most noticeable characteristics so be careful that you place them in the right place. This isnt that difficult. It is a matter of close observation and practice.

As I have said throughout this art website, you must let your eye guide your hand. Everyone can see. The trick is simply to let your hand record what you see, whether you are learning how to draw dogs, or for that matter, anything you draw.

    With practice, youll quickly become confident because it is naturally within us all. ;There is no mystery here.;You see it … you draw it.;

    Dog Drawings

The dog drawing above was done in charcoal. Color was added with pastels and with white pastel chalk. The original image measures 14 x 16 inches.

I intermingled charcoal, pastel, and white pastel chalk throughout. Pastel and charcoal were often layered. The white around the dogs nose, the white highlights in the eyes, and the white in the body are the natural paper showing through.

Note that the dog’s hair changes direction to coincide with the underlying bone structure of the head.

    The most detailed areas are the dog’s eyes and the dog’s nose.;

Dogs are cute! Who hasnt taken a moment to doodle their favorite pooch on the side of their paper before? But like many animals, dogs can be hard to draw well, especially from memory.

Draw The Eyes And The Nose

The nose will sit slightly below the middle point of the middle of the circle.

The eyes will be quite far apart, don´t underestimate how far apart they are!

The form of the eyes is a little bit weird if you first draw them so don´t be confused if you are struggling to get them right the first time around.

I would suggest you first try to draw the top part of the eyes first until you are happy with the top part and then the bottom line.

If this part is too hard or if you are frustrated then you can also download the worksheet and just trace the lines. This always helped me and after you got the hang of it then you can try and draw it freehanded again. You will be surprised by how much you will improve.

The main feature of this step is to give your dog a big nose! To do this, you can simply draw an oval shape below the eyes.

Once you have a nose that youre happy with, you can draw some extra lines to add more detail to the face. These can go at the top of the face and on the bottom part of the mouth.

Drawing Cartoon Animals in Microsoft Paint : How to Draw a Cartoon Dog’s Mouth & Ears in MS Paint

Trace over the vertical line extending from the nose to the mouth. Sketch fur over the outlines going down each side of the mouth. Trace over the outline for the top lip too. Then with a 6B pencil, shade the inside of the mouth very dark.

Similar to the spot above the nose, this dog has a large spot or birthmark covering the area between the nose and mouth. Sketch its outline as well as some texture details on each side of the vertical line joining the nose and mouth.

To shade this spot, Im starting with a general base layer of diagonal strokes to cover the entire surface. Then, Im going over it again with a second layer of shading. However, this time my strokes are shorter to more closely resemble hair. Finally, use darker tones to sharpen the edges just under the nose and around the mouth.

Use a light touch to sketch the white fur on the sides of the snout. The lower left area of the snout should have much darker fur. Sketch the fur under the dogs mouth. Use a mix of shadows and lines coming downward from the mouth. You may notice that the right side of the snout does not have the dark patch of fur that was found on the other side.

How To Draw A Dogs Tongue: Step By Step Lesson

    1. Using a very sharp F pencil, shade the tongue from the top right with soft, graduated strokes.

Dont show your lines because this object is smooth. On the top left, use a very sharp 6B to place the dark shadow between the fur and the tongue. Remember to keep the shadow jagged like the fur.

    2. With a sharp F pencil, shade the bottom of the tongue.

Notice that there are darks at both edges and light in the middle. This is because the teeth are under the tongue so its causing the tongue to curl.

    3. With an F pencil, continue to shade the tongue, paying very close attention to the shifting shadows.

Shadows always indicate that there is something going on underneath. If you get the shadows in the wrong place your anatomy will be off.

    4. The white area at the edge of the tongue wont show up until you shade the fur that is around it.

Make sure you leave that part white, as its the curling edge of the tongue. If you make a mistake and shade it in, use your battery eraser to lift the white edge. ~SA

We Go To The Color Steps

The next thing is to start giving color. Whether working in digital format or painting with colored pencils, you should start with a color base on the elements with their predominant color. In our case you can see that we give a dark brown to the ears, orange in most of the body and head and dark gray in the area of the snout, near the mouth.

If you paint with colored pencils you should be careful not to paint with dark colors in areas that should then be lighter because it will cost you a lot to cover the dark. This in digital drawing is no problem because it can be covered without difficulty.

In addition to the color details that I told you before, I also painted her eyes black, her nose even darker and some details of the hair color, especially the gray ones surrounding the dogs eyes.

Draw The Dogs Eyes And Side Of The Face

How to draw a dog’s tongue with coloured pencils – real time

Heres how to draw dog eyes step by step. Starting with the eye to our left, Im sketching a line on the underside of the brow to allow for how much it protrudes. Then, we can draw a squarish highlight. For this iris and pupil, try to draw them as circular as possible. For the other eye, Im drawing the iris and pupil first. Im saving the highlight for last. The order doesnt really matter. Just make sure you leave a little opening for the highlight.

From the edge of the iris, we can see a little wrinkle on the brow. As we keep looking at this brow, we can notice even more wrinkles. There are some pretty deep and significant ones at that. Keep drawing lines to develop the shape and wrinkles of the brow.

Sketch a thin line just under the eye to represent the eyelid. Also, there is a long fold or wrinkle on the side of the face running along the brow. Develop the top portion of the brow a bit more. Draw a line running along the white patch of fur going down the dogs forehead. Curve this line downward to shape the side of the snout. Then sketch a few more wrinkles under the eye and on the cheek.

Shade The Ears And Finish Drawing The Dog Face

Now lets work on the ears. Sketch a base layer of tones on the dogs right ear, taking care to place darker values in the proper locations. Sketch another layer of tones to build up the texture of the fur. Replace the outline of the ear with short strokes to resemble the hair on the edge. Use a 6B for the darkest areas.

Repeat this process for the other ear. Sketch a base layer of shading for the ear. Use short pencil strokes along the edge of the ear to create that furry look. Build up the layers of fur on the ear with additional shadows.

Okay, we are almost done. Its time to add the finishing touches. Look for opportunities to make lighter values stand out better by creating darker values adjacent to them. Keep sketching over other parts of the face to build up volume while still preserving highlights. Dont forget to add the whiskers!

And that is how to draw a dog face with realistic features!

    Sketch The Eyes And Nose

    ThoughtCo/Helen South

Careful, smooth shading keeps the eyes looking bright and shiny. Keep your pencil sharp and use small, fine movements to create a smooth texture.

Use the eraser to work back into darker areas to soften marks as needed to enhance dimensionality.

Remember that this is a sketch, not a photorealist drawing. You want to keep the drawing fresh and energetic, so don’t get too obsessed with tiny details.
