Interested in drawing cartoon noses? The first step to drawing cartoon noses is understanding how to draw realistic noses. Then, by removing detail, you can learn how to draw cartoon noses that still look anatomically correct on your characters faces.

Generally, a nose consists of three main elements: the bridge of the nose, which is made up of bone the tip or ball of the nose, which is made up of cartilage and the wings of the nostrils. To achieve a cartoon style, you use the same elements, but incorporate less detail or more exaggerated shapesor both.

For example, you could simplify the three elements of the nose into a singular C shape. Or, you could draw a large, round nose tip with tiny nostrils. Playing around with different sizes and shapespointy, round, small, and largecan dramatically change your characters overall look.

Cartoon noses have the same elements as realistic noses, but with less detail or exaggerated shapes.

Now that you’ve outlined the shadows and highlights of your dog’s face, you can begin to focus on the details. Begin by gently erasing the guidelines you created.

Next, use your pencil to add more subtle detail. Use a light touch because it’s easier to add more shadow than it is to erase it when you go too dark. Work from dark to light across the entire surface of the drawing, gradually building up the texture.

Use soft strokes where fur is short and harder strokes where it’s long. You can use the eraser to work back over white fur to brighten it and create a softer look.

Draw The Rest Of The Upper Face

First, draw a tip to the bottom of the brow to the left of the dogs right eye. Then, draw a dip in the brow similar to what the other brow had. Theres also a long wrinkle along this side of the face. Now, Im defining the outline of the snout. Since the head is slightly turned, make sure the snout overlaps the corner of this eye just a little. Sketch a few lines to develop the area above the brow.

Draw a line for the side of the face that hides behind the dogs protruding brow. Draw the bumpy contour that is the top of the dogs head. Afterwards, start drawing some of the forehead wrinkles and the edge of the white fur pattern. There are several overlapping layers of thick, flappy skin, so its helpful to use the reference photo as a guide.

Since we have our facial features in place, we no longer have a need for our guidelines. Use a kneaded, plastic, or regular eraser to get rid of them. The kneaded eraser is best for maneuvering around those very tight areas.

The design pattern on this dog or any other animal must follow the bends and folds of the surface upon which it lies. Draw the outline of the white fur pattern. Make sure to curve the outline up and around the wrinkles. Draw the frown lines, or forehead furrows, between the eyes, just above the dogs left nostril.

Easy Dog Drawings Step By Step

The time you spend watching cute dogs will heal your heart. In particular, dogs are attractive because their facial expressions and poses are human-like and their emotions are rich. I will introduce how to draw such a simple animal, a dog, from a combination of simple figures. Draw the dog on the whole sheet of paper, so it will be easier for you to draw small details and a large picture always looks more impressive than a small one.

First, lets make a sketch that captures the whole thing. Sketches are done to understand shapes such as contours, surface orientation and three-dimensional structure, light and shade, and color tones.

There are various methods, but this time I will first draw a motif with a combination of circles. Replacing the shape with a circle is the simplest and easiest approach. This method can be applied regardless of the motif or art style.

In the center of the line, draw the largest circle. It is not necessary to draw it perfectly flat, you see in my drawing it is also uneven.

Draw another circle next to it, and the one that will be the dogs head is slightly smaller in diameter than the lower one.

The diagonal line can now be removed with an eraser and draw the joint markings for the paw and the lower parts of the three paws since the fourth paw will not be visible.

Connect these lines with another chin line. The ears and tail of the dog, I think, you will draw yourself, without comment.

Draw Fur On The Sides Of The Dogs Face

Sketch fur on the sides of the face. Begin with a light base layer. Sketch most of the hair growing towards the outside edges of the face. Remember to erase the outline along the edge of the face before sketching the fur there. Sketch another darker layer of fur on top of the base layer. Some of this fur might curl upward or grow in different directions.

Keep adding darker tones around the eyes, from the lower eyelids to the outer corners of each eye. This extra shading around the eyes helps to add more form to the brows and surrounding features. Additionally, keep looking for other areas that need more tones applied to better distinguish between the white and brown fur. For the fold on the snout closest to the dogs left eye, sketch some light downward hairs in the middle of the fold. Define the outer furry edge of the fold by placing some darker tones next to the white hairs.

Draw A Dog From A Photograph

  • How to Draw Dogs Like a Pro. Begin by choosing a suitable reference photo to work from. It doesn’t really matter what the photo is like, as long as your dog’s face is clearly visible.
  • Block in Your Dog’s Face. On a blank sheet of paper, begin by sketching a reference line to indicate the center of your dog’s face. This is called “blocking in” the features, and it is the first step in any drawing.
  • Outline the Full Head. With the basic lines of your dog’s face blocked in, you can sketch the head in more detail. Use a light touch as you draw. These guidelines should be faint, so they can be erased later in the process.
  • Start Drawing Details. You have the basic structure and the outline. Now, it’s time to fill in some details. This is the stage where your dog’s portrait really starts to get form and personality.

Finish Outlining The Snout And Ears

How To Draw a Dog’s Nose

Now, lets work on the snout. We have some thick overlapping folds here above the nose. Sketch a line coming down beside the nose. Sketch a shorter, somewhat horizontal line immediately to the right of the nose. Keep working your way down.

Draw a bumpy line going down each side of the snout. These lines represent the outer edges of the rows of wrinkles between the nose and the mouth from where some of the whiskers originate.

From these two outlines, just begin sketching very light lines indicating the folds. These light lines should travel upward toward the nose. Also, there is a bit of curvature on some of the lines.

Sketch an indication of tonal value changes on the ears. These light lines will be helpful during the shading process. They will let us know where we need to shade lightly and where we need to shade a bit darker.

That just about does it for how to draw the outline of a dog face.

If you would like an easier and more accurate way of drawing the outline than the freehand method we used here, you can try the grid method, transfer method, or a plot-point method for more support. I have grids, outlines, and plot-point downloads for this tutorial and others available for members of the Lets Draw Today Club.

Of course, if you draw a dog face but neglect to shade it, some people might consider something to be missing. Therefore, well look at the shading steps next.

    How To Draw Dog Noses

Colored pencil tutorial | How to draw a dog nose!

Want to learn how to draw animal noses instead of human noses? Well start with a common and fun-to-illustrate pet: the dog.

Generally, a dogs nose is shaped like a triangle with rounded corners. However, if you want to learn how to draw dog noses more realistically, start with a soft anchor shape. Then, above that, add a shape that looks like a whales tail or the top of a mushroom, with each end curving down to form the nostrils. Finally, add a vertical line down the middle of the bottom half of the nose.

The next step of drawing dog noses is shading and adding detail. To shade the nose, start with the darkest area: the nostrils. From there, the nose may take on many different looksmonochromatic, spotted, or speckled.

Drawing dog noses starts with a soft triangle and two bean-shaped nostrils.

Shade The Ears And Finish Drawing The Dog Face

Now lets work on the ears. Sketch a base layer of tones on the dogs right ear, taking care to place darker values in the proper locations. Sketch another layer of tones to build up the texture of the fur. Replace the outline of the ear with short strokes to resemble the hair on the edge. Use a 6B for the darkest areas.

Repeat this process for the other ear. Sketch a base layer of shading for the ear. Use short pencil strokes along the edge of the ear to create that furry look. Build up the layers of fur on the ear with additional shadows.

Okay, we are almost done. Its time to add the finishing touches. Look for opportunities to make lighter values stand out better by creating darker values adjacent to them. Keep sketching over other parts of the face to build up volume while still preserving highlights. Dont forget to add the whiskers!

And that is how to draw a dog face with realistic features!

    Start With A Reference

You can use your own photo or one you find online, but add your own embellishments and tweaks to really make it your own. You dont need to trace, though you can if youre just starting out and want to get a better grasp on what dogs look like. Its not wrong to learn by tracing, but its a good idea to use those drawings as practice unless you took the photo yourself.

Many artists take their own reference photos. If you cant, you can use one you find online, but aim to make your drawing substantially different from the reference if you plan to use the picture for something other than practice.

Starting with a reference photo lets you work off of an existing image, which can help your drawing be more accurate. Use what you know of skeletal structure so you can better draw the shapes that make up a dog.

How To Draw A Dog: The Detailed Method

Drawing a detailed dog is a lot like drawing a simple dog, though it will likely take you more time and effort. Again, understand the simple shapes that make up a dog. Look at skeletal structure and muscle groups to help you understand what they look like under all that fur, as those are the features youll start with before you add more detail.

First and foremost: start simple. Its easier to draw a familiar yellow lab than it is to draw something more complex, like a Puli. That goes for shapes, too. Underdrawing is even more important when drawing detailed dogs than it is for simple dogs, even if you feel like youre erasing most of the work.

And erasing is a big part of drawing detailed dogs. You probably wont get it perfect the first time, but thats okay! The dog up above was my first attempt, and if I continued to practice I would get better. Erase and try again and again. You might not notice your skill improving, but every drawing you do brings you closer to the artist you want to be.

This beautiful dog is going to be our reference photo.

    Observe In Quick Sketches

Many people especially those who are new to art disregard the sketching phase and consider it a waste of time. Often they will draw one or two sketches and call it a day. It’s very easy to be tempted to speed up this stage. After all, details are much more fun to draw, aren’t they?

The problem is, if were too eager to get to the details, it’s easy to ignore the overall anatomy. And trust me on this: beautifully rendered fur on a creature that only partially resembles a dog will impress no one.

If you own a dog yourself, observe how they walk, run, jump, sit or lie down. You may think you know how they move, but you really won’t until you consciously observe the animal. You can also google some photos of dogs and use them as reference to quickly sketch different poses. Try not to spend time on details the sketching phase is not about that.
