People have enjoyed foods similar to the donut since ancient times. This is evidenced by archaeological finds.
The modern donut can be traced to early America, when Dutch settlers brought the tradition of olykoek or “oily cakes” from their homeland. The donut first appeared in a cookbook in 1803, and by the mid-1800s, donuts looked and tasted as they still do today.
In popular culture, such as movies and television shows, donuts by the dozen often come in pink boxes. Why? Refugees from other lands settled in California.
One family started a successful donut business. They desired red boxes for their donuts since they viewed red as a lucky color. However, pink boxes were cheaper so they used these.
Not only were the donuts themselves delicious, but since the shops were located near Hollywood, the donuts and their boxes were often used as movie props. Thus, plain pink donut boxes entered into popular culture.

Drawing the basic shape of the doughnut
First, let’s draw the basic shape of the subject using mostly curved lines. This food doesn’t have a perfect silhouette, so it’s important to draw this part using irregular lines. Don’t forget to add the chocolate coating using more curved lines on top of the cartoon doughnut.
adding gradient colors
Next, we can add colors inside both shapes using gradient fills. The bottom of the doughnut is colored with a subtle brown / orange color while the chocolate coating is brown. Notice how the bottom of both shapes is darker while the top is slightly brighter. You can use the same technique for the part visible inside the hole.
adding a few basic effects
So far, all we did was draw the shape of the cartoon doughnut and add gradient colors inside the subject. To make this one visually more appealing , we need to add a few basic effects to create more depth and volume.

We used a tasty-looking pink for the icing of our donut, yet while this s one look you could use, this is a step where you should let your creativity run wild.
Donuts can have icing that comes in any color you can think of, so that opens you up to some incredible color choices.
For this kind of drawing, it might look nice to use some bright and vibrant colors that will make this image pop!
I especially think that some bright mediums such as acrylic paint, colored pens or markers would suit this image perfectly.
That being said, if you prefer a more muted look to the picture, something like watercolors or colored pencils would also look very pretty.
If youre feeling extra crafty, you could even incorporate extras like glitter, stickers or beads onto the icing to make this donut look tasty enough to eat!

Materials For How To Draw A Donut
- Pencil. The Ticonderoga brand are the most reliable, make nice dark lines when you need them, and are the easiest to erase. Buying the pre-sharpened ones will save busy teachers a lot of time.
- Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tip erasers, especially when erasing leftover pencil lines after tracing.
- BlackSharpie Marker. These fine point permanent marker pens make nice black outlines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they get wet. Use them with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath to protect your tables.
- Prang Crayons. These are a bit softer than other crayons so they sometimes look like oil pastels. They also have a some nice brown shades that Crayola does not have unless you buy their larger boxes.
- Crayola Crayons. The reliable brand that always works well. The 24 pack has some of my favorite golden orange and yellow colors that seem a bit richer and warmer than the ones Prang has.

- Confectioners sugar or additional sugar, optional
Step 1: Prime the yeast
Unless youre using the instant kind, youll want to proof the yeast for 5 to 10 minutes. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water . Set aside until the mixture is bubbly.
Pro Tip: If your yeast hasnt bubbled much after 10 minutes, it may be expired. Toss the mixture and start again with a new yeast packet.
Step 2: Bring the dough together and let it rest
Once the yeast is bubbly and fragrant, add the warm milk, oil, sugar, salt and eggs and stir to mix. Stir in flour until the dough comes together to a very sticky mixture. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size, about 45 minutes.
When your timer goes off, stir the dough to release the air. Replace the kitchen towel and let the mixture rise for another 45 minutes.
Step 3: Cut the doughnuts and let them rise
Gently stir down the dough and roll it out onto a well-floured surface. Roughly shape the dough into a large, 1/2-inch thick rectangle. Cut out your doughnut shapes with a floured 2-1/2-inch doughnut cutter and place the doughnuts on a greased baking sheet.
