Tips For Beginning To Read Drum Notation

How to draw a Drum Set

When starting to read drum notes, its important to consider the following helpful tips to ensure you meet success.;

1. Break the lesson down into smaller pieces.

When learning a new song on drums, divide its sections into unique groups and work on them one at a time. Then connect them together. This trick will help you memorize the parts of the song more quickly.

2. Take it slow.

New drummers need to develop coordination between their limbs. Learning drums is just as much of a mental challenge as it is a physical challenge. A good method for new drummers is to practice rudiments and paradiddles taught in our drum lessons so that you can learn different patterns of right and left strokes on the drums.

Much like learning how to play a video game for the first time, your brain needs to learn right and left striking patterns. This can take time, so patience is important.

3. Set time aside to practice every day.

Beginner drummers need to train their brains to use their limbs in new ways. Setting aside time every day to practice will help reinforce good habits and lead to more consistent improvement than doing longer, less-frequent practice sessions.

4. Consider drum notation software.

5. Use words to make rhythms easier.

For beginners, learning to read drum notation is a lot like learning a new language. Use associations early on to remember what certain things mean on the drums. For example, certain words contain syllables that are applicable to different rhythms.

How is drum notation different from drum tablature?

Drum tab notation is a simplified version of drum notation. Instead of using the typical notes you would read in a piece of music, drum tablature uses a series of vertical and horizontal lines with different characters to represent rhythm and patterns for the drummer to play. All drummers are different and learn in different ways.

New drummers can benefit from using drum tab notation to begin learning the basics, almost as a steppingstone to drum notation. However, drum tablature is complicated in its own right and is largely a relic of a time when computers could not easily support the layout of drum notation.

Drawing The Bass Drums

33. Start by drawing 3 ovals. Fill the first one with a linear gradient from a dark gray to black, the second one with a linear gradient using , , and for the third one in the back use and . Next draw the shape for the body and use the same green gradient as before to fill it then use 2 of the ovals made and Subtract from shape area to obtain the bottom of the drum.

34. In the image below you can see some holding elements that you can draw using the Pen Tool and also use again the shapes made at step 28.

35. To make the legs of the bass drum take the Pen Tool and draw the first shape from below and fill it with a metal gradient then Copy and Paste it in back, move it a bit to the left and change the fill color to dark gray. Use similar 2 shapes and Subtract from shape area and Expand to obtain the selected stripe then draw the other 2 shapes that you see in the image.

Next take again the Pen Tool and draw the black shape then the red one on top, select both and click Subtract from shape area and Expand then place the obtained shape on top of the black one and change the fill to a radial gradient from gray to black.

Now take the Ellipse Tool and draw an oval then another one on top, select them both and Subtract again to obtain an edge.You can see in the image how to place all the shapes made.

Here is the entire leg and the other one made in the same way:

How To Read Drum Notation

Like the English language, drum notation is read from left to right. The staff is made up of five lines and four spaces, but notes can be positioned above or below the staff as well. Notes are placed in the staff based on which part of the drum set should be played at any given time. Notice below that the bass drum is in a different position on the staff than the snare or ride cymbal.

Drums are notated by dots, while cymbals are notated with an x. These symbols typically have stems attached to them, which help explain how to count the beat that is shown.

Reading drum notation;

There are several symbols musicians should know when starting to read drum notation, especially if theyre just starting off with a four- or five-piece drum set.

Reading the music staff for drums

Music is often divided up into even groups of space. We use measures in music to organize the rhythms of the song into these repeated groupings to make it easier to count through a song. To communicate what grouping we should count, we use whats called a time signature.

Reading time signatures

A time signature contains two numbers displayed as a fraction. The top number tells you how many beats to count within one measure, and the bottom number tells you what type of note gets the beat . Think of the time signature as ruler. Youre measuring time, or more accurately, the space between the notes that youre playing.;

Knowing How To Hit Cymbals

When setting up your drum set, you have many options for selecting your cymbals. Depending on what you play, you may encounter any of the following techniques while reading drum notation.

Striking the cymbal or hi-hat

The hi-hat is one of the main time-keeping tools for a drummer. By pressing your foot down on the pedal, you can create a tight sound between the two cymbals. The more you release pressure on the pedal, the more of a washy sound your hi-hat will make.;;

What is a crash bell drum technique?

You can use the bell of a cymbal to accent a part more loudly. Drummers often use the shoulder of the drum stick to bring out the volume of the bell.;;

What is a choke crash drum technique?

A choke crash technique is used when muting a cymbal after its been hit. This often creates a tight feel in music if performed alongside different instruments. To do this, you will first strike the cymbal as normal and then immediately grab it with one of your hands to quickly reduce its sound.;

What is a china drum technique?

A china cymbal is often used as an alternative to a loud crash cymbal. It sounds very heavy and trashy. This cymbal can be used to accent loud sections in a piece of music.;;

What is a splash drum technique?

What is an open hi-hat drum technique?

An open hi-hat is often played by taking your foot off the hi-hat pedal and allowing the cymbals to bounce off each other. This is typically used in loud sections of music.;

What is a closed hi-hat drum technique?;

How To Make Kettle And Barrel Drums

How To Draw A Drum Set, Drums

There are two kinds of drums which boys and girls can make. One is a kettle drum and the other is a barrel drum. To make a barrel drum you will need a hollow cylinder of some kind. A barrel or a keg may serve as the foundation. Each end must be covered with a skin. The best covering for a drum is a skin called a “drumhead.” It can be purchased in stores where musical instruments and music supplies are sold. It is an expensive material to use. Very strong paper or film cloth will serve the same purpose if the drum is not going to receive rough handling. One or two coats of shellac or varnish covering the cloth will make a better-toned drum. Only one skin is needed for a kettle drum. A mixing bowl, a tin pail, or a wooden chopping bowl are a few of the things that can be made into a kettle drum. The drumhead must be stretched tightly and held firmly in place. There are three ways in which it may be fastened to the body of the drum. If the drum is of paper use thumbtacks, as you see in figure 1. If there is a hoop around the drum body a strong cord may be wound tightly around the edge of the skin to hold it in place. A margin of an inch or more should be left for fastening the skin, as in figure 2. The two skins may be held on the drum body by lacing a cord back and forth between them, as pictured in figure 3. Paint the drum body in your choice of color.

Draw The Tripod Stand

1. Open a new web document. First, to make the stands tube, take the Rectangle Tool and draw a long rectangle then open the Swatch Libraries Menu > Gradients > Metals and use Steel to fill the shape. Next draw the other shape that you see in the image below using the Pen Tool, fill it with the same gradient and then draw a flat oval with the Ellipse Tool, fill it with a dark gray and send it to back. Place all the shapes like in the image:

2. Draw more shapes like above and place them as you see in the next image depending on how tall you want the stand to be or how many segments you want it to have.

3. To draw the legs of the stand, start by drawing with the Pen Tool the shape from below then Copy and Paste it in back. Move it a bit up and to the left and change the fill to a gradient using darker gray tones then the metal one used for the top shape.

4. Take the Pen Tool and draw the next shape and fill it with a linear gradient from a dark gray to black and add 4 black lines on top. You can see in the image the other ends for the 3 legs of the stand.

Here is how the legs should look like at this point:

5. Now, draw using the Rounded Rectangle Tool a long rectangle then Copy and Paste it in back, move it a bit up and to the right and change the fill gradient to a darker one like earlier. Draw also a small circle on top and fill it with a similar gradient.

Making Drums With Household Items

How to draw a Drum Set

You can make great drums out of things around the house. An empty oatmeal box makes a good drum. Your parents canl help you tie a string at each end of the drum so you can loop the string over your head. You can march around and beat the ends of the drum with your hands or with spoons. If you have several empty pans or tin plates, you can set them on the floor. The different pans will make different sounds. For little drums, you can use tin cans. Coffee cans make good drums. Your parents mustl make sure there are no sharp edges on the can. Place them on the floor in front of you and beat them with small sticks.

What Is Drum Notation

Drum notation is different than sheet music, although they look similar and use some of the same concepts. In sheet music, the symbols on the staff correspond to different notes. In drum notation, the symbols represent different parts of the drum set to be played. This is useful for beginners learning to coordinate their limbs, helping to develop the necessary skill sets to both comfortably keep steady time and play the correct part of the drum set.

In drum notation, the symbols represent different parts of the drum set

In drum notation, the notes are written on the staff and are separated by vertical bar lines. The space between the bar lines is referred to as a measure. You will typically count beats while playing different notes on the drum set within each measure.;

Drum notation does contain similarities to sheet music in that measures are counted and read the same way. By learning to read and write this part of the musical language, youll develop a strong sense of timing and rhythm control.
