Different Expressions Different Face Shapes

Depending on what kind of expression youre going for, the face will have different shapes.

For example, if youre drawing a surprised character, eyes growing big and a long O for the mouth, then the face will look more elongated.

On the other hand, if youre drawing someone angry, where the eyes and eyebrows grow close together and a closed mouth, maybe showing some teeth. Then we have the opposite effect.

Put yourself in front of a mirror and practice your expressions.

Take photos if you need to! Then, youll have tons of references for you to use in your drawings. If you prefer, you can even trace on top of your photos, so you can see clearly the differences in proportions and shapes, depending on the expression youre making!

Using those guide shapes, carefully draw a curved line over the top of the upper oval. This line should extend until it hits the horizontal line.

Draw Guidelines On The Face

There are 2 ways to do this step: Ruler or no ruler. I highly recommend using the ruler method for the first couple of faces you draw. Why? Because doing this step without it can throw your proportions off like crazy. Especially if you have trouble locating the center of an object with your eyes. The no ruler method requires you to split multiple sections of the face in half and then in half again.

Ruler Method: Make a ruler beside your drawing that is the same height. The ruler should be marked so there are 8 equal spaces. Always start with the center line.Draw faint lines through the face on the markings labelled CENTER LINE, 2, 3, A, and C. As you get used to this, you wont need to draw the ruler on the side.

No Ruler Method: Without the ruler, I draw lines in this order: CENTER LINE, 2, 3, B, A, C . This is the method I use to draw heads all the time.

How To Draw A Realistic Face Step By Step

Most people believe that drawing a realistic face is one of the most complicated aspects of art. A negative thought like this will only end up having you limited in lots of ways. Through this post, Pouted online magazine shows you how to master the process of drawing a realistic face. You will definitely become a pro with the steps outlined below.

1;Getting your pen and paper

These are the first tools you need to draw a realistic face. You are free to use any paper especially during the process of making sketches. An office printer paper can work just fine for this exercise since it doesnt bleed. This will ensure your sketched work doesnt look clumsy. Furthermore, you need pencils like 2B, HB, 4B, 5B, and 6B. These have their specific functions. Using them whenever required will help you to draw a realistic face.

2;Outlining the face

This should be done in a very light manner. First of all, you need to understand the fact that heads arent circular but oval-shaped. In other words, the shape of the human face is similar to that of an egg. Therefore, draw an oval shape which is tapered at its bottom. Please note that this needs to be gotten right to draw a realistic face. Anything short of the correct oval-shape will make people doubt your drawing.

3;Addition of dividing lines

4;Drawing the nose

5;Drawing the mouth

6;Adding the eyes

7;Drawing the pupil

8;Adding the ear

How To Draw A Face

How to Draw the Face
  • Draw the biggest shapes first and work your way down to the smaller shapes and details.
  • Sketch out simplified shapes of the facial features and refine them after you have positioned all of the major parts of the face.
  • Keep different parts of you drawing in roughly the same state of completion. For example you do not want to fully draw out one eye and then find out that it looks off when you place the second eye. The correct way to draw is to first place both eyes by drawing the outline shape of each.

How To Draw A Female Face Step : Face Shape

Draw a circle and make a small horizontal line at the bottom for the chin. Its position should be roughly half of the circles diameter;vertically. This matters because the circle was drawn freehandedly, so the horizontal diameter could be different.

Females tend to have shorter chins than their male counterparts, so a long chin can display a more masculine look.

When youre done, draw the jawline to connect the circle to the chin.;Females have all sorts of face shapes, but for this example Im going to stick with a smooth, tapered jawline thats less angular.

Finally, use a ruler to draw a faint line down the middle of the face vertically.

Draw Various Male Faces

I noticed that when drawing males with thick outlines around the mouth, they turn out looking more feminine. You can lighten the outlines to make a pair of lips look more masculine.

  • Drawing narrow eyes can make a face look more chill and relaxed. The more visible the iris is, the more alert, intense, surprised, innocent or even angry the face will look.
  • Sharper, broader angles can make him look stronger, more masculine
  • Try different eye shapes too. I tried to make him look southeast asian by turning his eyes up at the ends, making the tip of the nose less pointy and giving him a pair of well defined lips.
  • Try to turn your character from a man into a boy by simply making his jawline narrower and smoother so his bones look less developed.
  • See if you can age him by adding different types of facial hair too!

What Is The Most Attractive Face Shape

How to Draw a Heart Shaped Face

Several factors determine face shapes, and each face shape is beautiful in its own way. However, a study conducted at the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia found that the heart-shaped face with a wide forehead and pointy chin is considered the most attractive of all.

The scientists analyzed the facial measurements from photos of 55 beautiful female models and quantified that the vertical distance between the eyes and cheekbones should be 13.1mm to be classified as attractive.

Generally, a slim face with high cheekbones, large eyes, and full lips are considered to be very attractive.

Add Hair To Your Face Drawing

Finally, draw individual curved lines from the center of the top of the head that curve down around the side of the face. The lines should be darker in the middle and become gradually lighter, before darkening again along the left side of the face.

Hair can be as simple or as complicated as youd like it to be. Take your time and dont worry about being perfect.

Youll repeat this on the right side of the face with lighter shading, bringing the lines around the edges of the shoulders and face to complete your drawing.

Your realistic portrait is complete!

Shade & Finish The Drawing

For some very basic shading you can add shadows in the most common places. In this case they will be as follows:

  • Tiny shadows around the eyelids
  • Small shadows below the eyelashes
  • Very tiny shadow to one side of the nose
  • Fully shaded ears
  • Large shadow on the neck in the shape o the chin
  • Fully shaded inner part of the hair between the head/neck and the side hair

As mentioned earlier you can also add some hair highlights as sort of white zigzag lines across the hair. As suggested earlier you can simply leave this area white and then color around it. Alternatively you can use a white correction pen to add them in over top or do it digitally.

Drawing Perfect Manga Eyes

After youve gotten familiar with balancing your proportions, feel free to bend these “rules” and get more creative. But for starters:

  • Manga eyes generally have a sharp top and bottom with softer sides or corners.
  • The eyebrow follows the shape of the upper eyelid to some degree.
  • The distance of the eyebrow from the upper eyelid is proportional to the eyes height.
  • The upper eyelid casts a shadow on the eye.
  • Girls eyes usually have more highlights in them and their eyelashes are longer than boys.

The eyes are arguably the most crucial and defining feature on your characters face. Therefore, experiment and see how you can express different emotions through the character’s eyes.

Once youve created a face, you can easily change the features to test out different looks: hairstyles, lips, nose lengths, eye shapes, etc The possibilities are endless and its also a great way to learn how each facial feature impacts a characters emotions.

You can keep your construction lines to aid in the process or erase them and use the faint lines from your erased features to draw a slightly different one.

Move your features around, make them bigger, smaller, longer, shorter or place them further apart. The possibilities are endless!

Flatten The Sides Of The Spheres

Where the ears will eventually be placed youll want to flatten the sides of the face. If you think back to the orange to get the desired effect youll just be cutting off a little bit more from the side of the orange.

Follow along with the video for this lesson on proportions for face drawing to really see clearly what you will need to do to flatten the sides.

In the next lesson on how to draw heads, you will continue where you left off here and start to draw the structure of the mouth and chin in three dimensions.

Finish With Some Hair

Of course, learning how to draw a face and head also means learning to draw hair. When drawing a characters hair, I first create the basic hair shape, noting that the hair is bigger than the scalp. I then add direction to the hair, remembering to draw strokes from the crown of the head. To give hair a more natural appearance, I introduce a sense of weight to the bottom of the shape. Trying drawing the hair shape with a thicker outline and thinner internal lines. This gives it direction.
