“Were you raised in a barn?” – American idiom meaning “shut the door”

A barn is a classic farm building used for sheltering animals or items. Barn types may be named for their purpose; for example, a dairy barn is used for milking cows and a tobacco barn is used for drying tobacco after it is harvested. Others have specific names, like stable or shed.

Traditionally, the bottom portion of a barn housed animals and the top stored hay. Also it was mainly built from wood, just like a log cabin. Today, however, barns have been adapted to other purposes. Some are houses and others are used as rustic venues for events such as weddings.

How To Draw A Farm

A farm is a property devoted to agriculture – the keeping of useful plants and animals, mostly for food.

Farms around the world differ in what they grow – cattle and wheat in middle America; fruit trees in Florida and California, USA; pineapples in Hawaii; olives in Europe; bananas and coffee in tropical regions; rice in Asia; and so forth.

Farms have also become a symbol of nostalgia in popular culture, of the “good old days” that once were. This may be due in part to the fact that a century ago, many families engaged in some level of farming, such as keeping a milk animal and a garden, to supplement their diet. Today, this tradition is largely lost to large-scale farming operations, ample refrigeration, urbanization, and “day jobs” located away from the home.

Fun Kid Facts About Barns

  • Barns are always painted red for economical and practical reasons. Red paint was inexpensive back in the early 1800 and 1900s. Later it was discovered that the red color absorbs sun rays better in the winter which kept the barn warmer.
  • Even though now different paint colors are no longer cheaper or more expensive than one another, red is still the chosen color for barns as tradition dictates.
  • The first barns were a spin on European longhouses that has stables and sleeping quarters.
  • English-style barns were built from the 1600s to 1800s, they were windowless until eventually it was found that farm animals enjoyed the warm sunlight and thus windows became adopted and put in after the 1800s.
