The wonderful thing about character drawing is you can bend the rules! In this example, even though the body proportions are unrealistic the drawing still reads as a cat because Ive used the basic elements we associate with cats ear shape, whiskers, tail, and tiny nose.

Add additional hints to reinforce the character like fur, fur colour, and fur markings. Accessories can play an important role in conveying the story or emotion behind your drawing, in this case I used a tiny mouse to add humour in both size contrast and to enhance the cats worried expression.

3. Your eyeballs should rest on the horizontal plane .

4. Next, draw your nose! On cats this is more of a triangleor if youre a musician, a guitar pick.

5. Draw two circles on either side of your nose. This will later become your cats mouth/snout. Think Wilford Brimley.

6. Lets form the bottom of that mouth. Draw a small curve underneath your snout.

11. Are you familiar with action figures? You know how some of them have balls where their joints are to help with their limb movability? This is exactly what were doing with this cat. Draw two circles where the front legs start .

12. Now draw a couple thigh balls for their hind legs.

13. Im drawing yet another hind leg ball. My cat is sitting down.

14. Time for those paws! Draw four circles where you think they should be.

16. Draw a skeleton line for your tail.

The house cat or domestic cat is a common sight around the world. The housecat is the smallest member of the cat family.

They make great pets, but remain independent enough to survive on their own. Once-domesticated cats living in the wild are known as feral cats.

Cats were first domesticated thousands of years ago. Mummified cats and carvings of cats have been discovered in the tombs of ancient Egypt.

Did you know? A group of cats is called a clowder or glaring. Cats may be small, but they are mighty hunters. On one small island near New Zealand, the first European settler brought a house cat with him.

The cat caught a bird, which he sent to a scientific organization for identification. By the time they wrote back requesting more specimens as they believed it to be a new species, the cat had eradicated the wrens from the island! A single cat hunted this bird to extinction.

Scan It And Open The Sketch

For this step you’ll need a scanner, or at least some means of digitizing your sketch . In any case, your sketch needs to be transferred onto your computer in a high enough resolution to allow you to work with it. My sketch is 1500px wide and 1500px high which is fine.

Open your sketch file in Illustrator by either opening it directly or opening a new document and going to File > Place. Give the layer it’s on an appropriate name and lock it. I’ve also hidden the artboard to remove unwanted clutter from my screen.

By Step Instructions For A Cat Face

1. Begin by drawing an oval to outline the cat’s face.

2. From each side of the oval, extend a long, curved line. At the bottom of the line, connect short, curved lines in a jagged zigzag pattern. This forms the cat’s cheeks, complete with tufts of fur.

3. Connect the tufts using a long, curved line, to completely enclosing the face. Notice the pointed bulge in the line indicating the chin.

4. On each side of the head, draw three curved lines extending outwards and meeting in a point – forming a curved triangle. This is the cat’s ear. Repeat on the opposite side.

8. Draw the nose and mouth. Begin by extending faint lines downward from the eyes. This outlines the snout. Connect these lines by enclosing a small, irregular shape, somewhat like a rounded, upside down triangle. Beneath the nose, draw two curved lines in the shape of a wide “W” to form the mouth. Above the “W,” draw dots to indicate the growth of whiskers. Add depth to the chin by drawing a small curved line beneath the “W.”

9. Extend long whiskers – long curved lines – from the dots on each side of the mouth. Add the texture of fur to the forehead and cheeks using short, curved lines that meet at jagged angles.

Cats have been a part of human life since around 3100 B.C., evidence of which can be found in ancient Egypt. There, cats were regarded as deities.

Their association with humans likely arose from their attraction to mice that invaded human settlements. It is thought that cats may have been domesticated in Africa, the Middle East, and China at an even earlier date.

Learn How To Draw A Fat Cat With This Easy Step By Step Tutorial The Shapes Dont Get Much Easier Than This

Heres another project for those just learning how to draw. The simple face, round body parts and focus on the front feet of this cat make him or her very drawable. There are not a lot of details to get lost in. In fact, those that finish early may want to add some extra texture lines, in both the fur and the grass.

Note: Not all crayons will show up when you color with one over another. I get the best results with the Crayola brand on the paper first, and then the Prang brand on top. The Crayola ones seem to make a more slippery surface, and the Prang have a little more grit, similar to oil pastels. When you need really rich colors, reach for them!
