A gas mask is a protective breathing device. It is designed to protect its wearer against harmful substances, such as chemicals or bacteria, that may be present in the air.

Why does the gas mask look so strange, even frightening? And how does it work? Its tight-fitting hood keeps out contaminants; its eyepieces allow the wearer to see; and the filters protruding from it contain screens that strain out particles as well as activated charcoal, which can capture and hold poisons so that they do not reach the lungs of the wearer. This type of mask has been around for over 100 years, but beak-shaped masks were used by doctors as far back as the fourteenth century.

There have been times and places where gas masks were part of everyday life. Since World War I, they have been standard equipment for soldiers. During World War II, schools in England were stocked with gas masks and children were drilled in their use. These were nicknamed “Mickey Mouse masks” in an attempt to make them less scary for children. Each citizen had his or her own mask. Special gas masks were even designed to keep babies safe.

Some jobs, such as scientific research and hazardous waste cleanup, require similar masks or even complete protective suits. Today, the gas mask is often seen as a symbol of warfare or of “doomsday preppers,” people who stockpile supplies in case of major disasters.

Now Draw The Other Filter And Facepiece

In this third part of our guide on how to draw a gas mask, we will be adding the other filter of the mask.

The good news is that it will look identical to the other one that you drew, except it will be reversed.

The more symmetrical you can make it the better, so you could maybe measure the size of the first one to make sure that the second one is the same size.

Then we will be drawing a rather angular shape over the front of the mask that would be going over the mouth.

In the next few steps of the guide, we will be finishing off the final details of the mask.

Step 1: Sketch an outline of the shape you want to make, using the inside edge of the rim as a guide for the bottom of the face. Cut along sketch lines.

Sketch your shape before cutting the plate.

Step 2: To make hair, cut paper into a rectangle about 2 or 3 inches wide and 2 to 18 inches long. Put this shape through a paper crimper if you want to make the hair even wilder. Fringe the rectangle to within 1/2 inch of the long edge. Cut the fringed rectangle into smaller pieces, and glue pieces around the top of the plate. Let dry.

Go a little wild with fringed-paper hair.

Step 3: Glue wiggle eyes onto the eye shapes, and add a mouth with glitter glue. If you’d like, fringe two small pieces of black paper, curl each around your finger, and glue them above the eyes to make eyelashes.

Step 4: Attach a craft stick to the bottom of the plate with craft glue. When it dries, use the stick as a handle to hold your mask.

Step 3: Slide the strips through the openings.

Step 4: Pull the top strip through the eye slits until just 1 inch sticks out from the left side. Using a pencil, sketch funny eyes . Pull the strip from the left until you see only white space in the eye area, and sketch another set of eyes; repeat until you reach the end of the strip. Make each set of eyes different. Remove the strip, and trace over the pencil lines with black marker.

Step 4: Draw the eyes and mouth on the paper strips.

Step 5 Repeat this process with the mouth strip.

Step 6: Fringe the top of the plate, from the edge to the inside of the rim. Paint every other piece of fringe the color of your choice. Let dry.

3. Sketch two curved lines across the top of the oval. The lines should extend just beyond the oval, meeting to enclose a curved shape. Draw another curved line just above the oval, and allow it to intersect this shape as it extends beyond the oval. This details the top of the gas mask.

Next Draw The Filters And Start The Details For The Gas Mask

A gas mask would just be a cool-looking mask without the filters that protect the wearer from noxious fumes and chemicals, so we will add the first of these filters in this part.

Try to think of the filter as a squat cylindrical object, and it will be at a bit of an angle on the side of the mask to create the shape you see in the reference picture.

There will be some rounded lines for the base of this filter, and on the outer edge there will also be a circular shape.

Finally, draw three rounded triangular shapes onto the area of the mask that would be going over the nose. We will add more details to these shapes very shortly!

Next Draw The Final Details Of Your Gas Mask Drawing

The filter of a gas mask will have lots of small holes on it to allow for air to go in and out for purification.

These holes are what we will be adding in this step of our guide on how to draw a gas mask. To add these, you would find it easier if you can find a pen with a fairly large tip, and then make lots of dots on the surface of the filters on the sides and front.

It may be tempting to just go wild with dots, but you should try to keep it evenly spaced. It can take a bit of patience but it will be worth it in the end!

Then you can finish off with some of your own details! One fun idea would be to draw a head wearing the gas mask.

You could even use your own face as inspiration to imagine what it would look like if you were wearing this mask. How will you finish off the details of your gas mask drawing?

How To Do Bag

, DO, Department of Emergency Medicine, University of New Mexico School of Medicine

In BVM ventilation, a self-inflating bag is attached to a nonrebreathing valve and then to a face mask that conforms to the soft tissues of the face. The opposite end of the bag is attached to an oxygen source and usually a reservoir bag. The mask is manually held tightly against the face, and squeezing the bag ventilates the patient through the nose and mouth. Unless contraindicated, airway adjuncts such as nasopharyngeal and/or oropharyngeal airways are used during BVM ventilation to assist in creating a patent airway. Positive end expiratory pressure valves should be used if further assistance is needed for oxygenation without contraindications to its use.

Successful BVM ventilation requires technical competence and depends on 4 things:

  • A patent airway

  • PEEP valve as needed to improve oxygenation

Establishing a patent airway for BVM ventilation requires

  • Keeping the oropharynx clear of physical obstructions

  • Proper patient positioning and manual maneuvers to relieve tongue and soft tissue obstruction of the upper airway

  • Airway adjuncts such as a nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal airway to facilitate effective air exchange

Rapid provision of successful ventilation and oxygenation is the goal.

    Positioning For Bvm Ventilation

The sniffing positiononly in the absence of cervical spine injury

    • Position the patient supine on the stretcher.

    • Align the upper airway for optimal air passage by placing the patient into a proper sniffing position. Proper sniffing position aligns the external auditory canal with the sternal notch. To achieve the sniffing position, folded towels or other materials may need to be placed under the head, neck, or shoulders, so that the neck is flexed on the body and the head is extended on the neck. In obese patients, many folded towels or a commercial ramp device may be needed to sufficiently elevate the shoulders and neck. In children, padding is usually needed behind the shoulders to accommodate the enlarged occiput.

Head And Neck Positioning To Open The Airway: Sniffing Position

    A: The head is flat on the stretcher; the airway is constricted. B: The ear and sternal notch are aligned, with the face parallel to the ceiling , opening the airway. Adapted from Levitan RM, Kinkle WC: The airway Cam Pocket Guide to Intubation, ed. 2. Wayne , Airway Cam Technologies, 2007.;

If there is concern for cervical spine injury:

    • Position the patient supine or at a slight incline on the stretcher.

    • Position yourself at the head of the stretcher.

    • Avoid moving the neck and, if possible, use only the jaw-thrust maneuver or chin lift without head tilt to manually facilitate opening of the upper airway.
