Gila Monsters Enough Said

Canyon in Hidalgo County potential Gila monster habitat.

Who doesnt love Gila monsters? They are brightly colored, have unique, bead-like structures on their skeletons, and are quite large for a lizard. Unfortunately, their popularity and uniqueness makes them a target for illegal collection and commercialization. They are also sometimes killed because they are venomous and perceived as a threat. The fact that the Gila monster is listed as endangered by New Mexico, and that a recovery plan was recently approved for this species, demonstrates that its time to set the score straight on the Gila monster and see what can be done to conserve it.

I heard my husband yell, “Look at that!”

I turned and looked toward where he was pointing and saw a 2-foot, yellow-and-black reptile slowly crawling across the ground to the right of me. I gasped at how large it was and because I’d never seen one and had no idea what it was.

I didn’t know that I was snapping pictures of one of only two venomous lizard species in North America.

I snapped several photos and continued to watch the giant lizard The reptile continued walking slowly across the ground, its short stubby tail slowly wagging behind it, all the while completely unaware that it was drawing a small crowd of hikers. We all watched as it waddled between scattered brush and eventually made its way to a small outcropping of black lava rock, where it crawled underneath a shady overhang.

My husband and I continued along along the Butterfly Trail in Snow Canyon State Park, chatting excitedly about how awesome it was that we’d seen some cool wildlife during our hike. We eventually made our way to the lava tube caves at the end of the hike and then began our return trip.

First Gila Monster Captured On Tumamoc Hill

JUST NOTICING something for the first time, that you usually walk past blindly, can make your day. Seeing simply makes a primate happy. Seeing something amazing can make you feel really alive. My son Leo shouted from the backseat on the way to pre-school this week, Look, its a digger tractor! It was more than that: a big truck pulling a trailer with a backhoe on it. We were happy. Some walkers have noticed a rock along the Tumamoc road that looks like the Virgin Mary and Christ child. Some things you see could be life-changing.

At last Sundays drawing session, it was a Gila Monster. An earthly vision. A girl, a beauty, Sheila to be precise. Looking quite fetching with just the right amount of shine around her lips, a little leak from her venom glands. The sighting made my week. Im sure weve all walked past Gila Monsters without seeing them. But they are made to be noticed

We know its a she because after Barbara saw the monster, I texted Matt Goode of the Tumamoc Herpetology Lab who dropped whatever he was doing to come up and see it. We followed her for about half and hour until Matt drove up and, surprising us, caught her with his bare hands. He showed us where to look, where the sun doesnt usually shine. There had been some claimed sightings before, but this was the first Gila Monster,?Heloderma suspectum, captured on Tumamoc for science.

Toxins And Drug Research

The constituents of H. suspectum venom that have received the most attention from researchers are the bioactive peptides, including helodermin, helospectin, exendin-3, and exendin-4. Exendin-4, which is specific for H. suspectum, has formed the basis of a class of medications for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, known as Glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists.

In 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug exenatide for the management of type 2 diabetes. It is an extravagantly synthetic blueprint of the protein exendin-4, isolated from the Gila monster’s venom. In a 3-year study with people with type 2 diabetes, exenatide showed healthy sustained glucose levels. The effectiveness is because the lizard protein is 53% identical to glucagon-like peptide-1 analog , a hormone released from the human digestive tract that helps to regulate insulin and glucagon. Using a sophisticated injection formula with sustained release of the drug the lizard protein remains effective much longer than the human hormone, This helps diabetics keep their blood glucose levels under control for a week by a single injection. Exenatide also slows the emptying of the stomach and causes a decrease in appetite, contributing to weight loss.
