How To Draw A Cartoon Giraffe

Step 1: Start with the lightest colour first and sweep the brush within the animal shape, moving across the waxy lines.

Since the paint is water based, the wax will repel the paint to leave the waxy lines in tact.

Step 2: Add a second colour.

The first and second colours with begin to merge, creating new shades and wonderful swirls, akin to a type of marbled effect.

Step 3: Continue filling the giraffe with colour.

Step 4: Once the body is complete, add a stroke of paint around the outline of the giraffe.

Leave the giraffe to thoroughly dry.

Quick Tips About These Online Lessons

The beauty about video art lessons is that you can pause and go back and forth as you see fit. I usually do one round with the kids to kick them off and watch to see if they start struggling with speed. Then I REMIND them that they can PAUSE the video at any time.

As soon as they remember that they are in control of the teacher unlike a real class they feel so much more confident! You will instantly see a switch. When they first start following along, they will probably be shouting frazzled things like, SHE IS GOING SO FAST! I WILL NEVER CATCH UP! I CANT DO THIS!

But dont worry! Just pause the video and rewind it 15 seconds. It just takes one time of you showing them that! And BOOM! All the stress disappears. Its so funny because we do these at-home lessons all the time because of the current state of the world and we always start off with hysteria. And then they end up spending 90 minutes drawing ALL THE THINGS on their own.

But as a mom, I had to tell you that it starts off a little bumpy because its new. So, be warned. Just stay with them until they settle otherwise they wont be able to feel like they can do it.

    Start With These Simple Steps

    1. Plan your drawing.

When it comes to reference photos, remember there are several different subspecies of giraffe, and each one has its own special spot pattern, says Whitlatch. For example, the pattern on the Rothschilds giraffe is quite different from the marks on the Masai giraffe. If you want to draw a cute cartoon giraffe, these details are less important. But if you want to create a realistic drawing, the details are important.

    2. Break down the basic shapes.

Before you get to the details, you need to sketch a basic underdrawing to get the lines of your giraffe shape right. I always just simplify the body into basic shapes, explains Whitlatch Be methodical and notice how sloped the back is, for example. Or how its front legs are somewhat longer and taller than its hind legs. Use circles and oval shapes to block in the major parts of the giraffe. See where the joints connect, and notice the thickness of the giraffes neck. If you analyze these simple shapes, youre more likely to get an accurate animal drawing.

    3. Polish the shapes and silhouette.

Once youve got that overall structure down, you can refine the drawing, says Whitlatch. Perfect those curved lines and define the muscles. Remember, while they can look tall and spindly, giraffes are actually big, sturdy mammals. Help your drawing communicate that density by adding some light shading to show shadow and dimension.
