An elf is a mythological creature of German folklore. The elves of old generally resemble tiny humans. They were considered mischievous, causing diseases, bad dreams, or stealing children. Some were thought to be benevolent or helpful.

Elves remain a part of popular culture. They are seen everywhere from Christmas decorations to Keebler brand cookies and crackers. Even Santa Claus himself is said to be a “jolly old elf.”

A number of anime and manga feature elfin characters, which may be identified by their large, pointed ears. These may mix Japanese and European mythologies. For example, in the anime Sword Art Online, elves of all shapes and sizes inhabit a video game world called ALfheim Online.

How Can I Draw Fantasy Elf Ears

Well, Ive got you covered! Here well be talking about the basic Shapes for you to do if youre looking to create some Pointy Ears for your Character.

We wont be exaggerating them too much so you can use them for a regular human character if you wish to as well.

Or you can exaggerate them yourself for your High-Fantasy Character Design, your call!

In the end, Ill also show you some examples of how you can customize a bit more your ears and style. Like I said before when it comes to drawing elf ears, I tend to exaggerate them a lot and make them super pointy.

Anyway, lets get this show on the road!

Im using a simple a Head Reference Guideline that Ive created. You can make your own if you wish to or not use one at all, its totally up to you, although Id say it can be very helpful to use a reference, especially if youre still beginning your practice and are not used to the shapes yet.

Start by creating a straight Vertical Line for the Height of your Ear, then make a very Pointy Shape like in the image. These are just basic shapes, some guidelines for our sketch! You can make this shape as sharp and pointy as you wish.

The dimensions you want to use are totally up to you, this is just an example, although if its your first time doing this, Id advise to try and copy the images so you can get the hang of the shapes and lines.

Later on, you can experiment more and try different styles!

For now, Ill keep it very sharp and soften it up later.

In the mythology of Germany, the term “elf” originally referred to any spirit, good or bad. Later, the term denoted a small, human-like creature. Elves were often seen as mischievous, stealing children, harming cattle, and giving people bad dreams. Others were seen as good, teaching birds to sing and performing helpful tasks for people.

Belief in elves waned during Medieval times, but reentered popular culture with William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In the early 1800s, St. Nicholas, the forerunner of Santa Claus, was first described as a “jolly old elf.” By 1850, at least two literary references had been made to “Christmas elves” helping Santa to make toys for children in his workshop at the North Pole.

Today, elves in art are typically depicted as being short in stature and having pointed ears. Christmas decorations, cartoons, and live action films feature such elves, typically clad in green and wearing pointed shoes and hats. Elves of other descriptions occupy books, movies, and memorabilia of fantasy fiction. Today, the country of Iceland has the highest number of people reporting a belief in elves.

Position & Draw The Mouth

The bottom lip of the mouth will be roughly halfway between the bottom of the nose and the bottom of the chin. You can draw the actual mouth just a tiny bit above that point.

In this case the character will have a bit of a smile so you can draw the mouth slightly loner and more curved than in its natural state.

This tutorial is now updated to show what it looks like when you draw and color the elf with markers, just like what many cartoon animators do. I love how you can add some shadows really easily just by layering the color a bit wherever you want it to look a little darker.

Position & Draw The Elf Ears

The way elf ears are drawn can sometimes just be a style decision but other times they can also help emphasize a characters personality. For example more upwards pointing ears can mean a more upbeat personality. Downwards pointed ears on the other hand can be attributed to characters with a more a more mild or shy personality.

One explanation for this can be that animals tend to raise their ears when alert/on guard and lower them when scared. This is something that pretty much everyone knows and is used to. Therefore drawing pointy anime/manga ears in a particular ways can help send a visual message about the character they are attributed to.

You can use the first two pairs in the example for the regular/upbeat face and the last set for the mild/shy one.

The Elf on the Shelf began as a children’s book published in 2005, entitled The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition.

The story recounts the tale of a “scout elf,” sent by Santa Claus to watch children from Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve.

Each night, the elf reports on whether the children have been naughty or nice.

Accompanying the book is a small plush elf, which the family can use to perpetuate this tradition in their own home.

Each night, the elf is moved to a different location, and each morning, the children make a game of finding where he hides.

The Elf on the Shelf has appeared in an animated television show entitled An Elf’s Story: The Elf on the Shelf. The product line has expanded to include additional elf dolls, plush “elf pets,” and a birthday tradition book.

A Jewish counterpart called Mensch on a Bench was also released for Hanukkah celebrations.

Finish The Elf Character Drawing

To finish the elf drawing add some basic shading. In this particular case the character will have very generalized shadows that tend to occur in most common lighting conditions.

Add the shadows as follows:

  • On the head/face cast by the hair
  • Around the eyelids
  • At the top of the eyes
  • Inner parts of the ears
  • To one side of the nose
  • Below the bottom lip
  • On the neck from the head/hair

For examples of shading a face in different types of lighting see:

You can add the shadow in exactly the same places for the dark elf.

After you finish the shadows you can also add some highlights to the hair. In this case they will be done as a series of lines/zigzags but you can also do other simpler types of highlights.

There is no need to add highlights for the dark elf as the hair is pure white and they wont be visible.

For examples of other types of hair highlights see:

By Step Instructions For Drawing The Elf On The Shelf

1. Begin by drawing the elf’s head. Start with a long, curved line to outline the shape of the face and jaw. Use a “C” shaped line to form the ear, and another curved line to continue the hairline. Use another long curved line to craft the top of the head. Then, use a series of curved lines, meeting in points, to outline the shape of the hair upon the forehead.

2. Draw a curved line beneath the head to enclose the neck. Extend two curved lines outward from the neck. Then, connect the lines using a zigzag line, forming the collar of the elf’s garment.

3. Extend a long, curved line from one side of the collar. Double the line back upon itself until it almost reaches the collar. This is the elf’s arm. Then, draw a curved line across the end of the arm to indicate the hand.

4. Draw two long curved lines from the opposite side of the collar. Allow them to meet the first arm so that it appears that the two arms overlap. Draw a curved line across the bottom of the arm to form the hand.

Human Ears And Elf Ears Differences

If youre like me, by now youve read, watched and played several fantasy stories, where humans, dwarves, orcs, fairies, elves and many others take form in such new, weird and beautiful shapes.

Of course, by immersing yourself in these worlds, there must have been a time, at some point, where you tried to create characters with pointed ears!

Human ears can have many shapes and sizes, but it still revolves around the same shape. With elf ears, however, you can have all shapes, sizes, and details!

In my drawings, I tend to draw my elves with longer ears, depending on how you want your character to look like or according to your taste you can play with the size as much as you want!

Theres another reason than merely style and design that elf ears look different than human ears, theres also a practical reason: pointed ears focus sounds in a better way, meaning that they can orientate themselves towards the source of the sounds.

We can actually easily notice this by looking at a cat, for example, you regularly can see a cat or dog moving its ears around, checking the sound source, without having to turn their heads.
