How to Draw a Glass of Water: Narrated Step by Step

Drawing water can frustrate many artists, but it can be rewarding and is a sign of true artistic skill. The ability to draw water in a vast landscape or in tiny droplets, at rest or in turbulent motion, is a great way to show off your technical skills. It is an exercise in adaptability. To draw water is to draw light and motion itself and to be comfortable drawing something that is all about form. Because of that, its well worth the study and practice. If you can draw water, you can draw anything.

Regardless of the type of water youre drawing, youll find brushes and other tools to bring it to life in Adobe Fresco.

Draw The Outline Of The Glass

Begin your drawing by sketching with faint lines and holding the pencil halfway down. This will ensure that you dont press too heavily on the paper.

First, you will need to draw I faint rectangular shape onto the page into which the form of a symmetrical glass can be outlined.

At this stage in the drawing, it is also a good idea to think about the position of the glass in relation to the page and its placement.

For example, do you wish it to be drawn central or to one side of the page?

The first thing you will need to draw is a rectangular shape. This will enable you to draw the forms related to the glass in proportion.

Once this rectangular shape is established, you can add a centerline. The center line is the central point around which all of the ellipses will be drawn.

Another important consideration before you apply any essential details is where to draw the eye level, as this will determine your viewpoint.

A higher eye level will result in a drawing looking downwards, for example, if you usually looking at the glass on a table beneath you. Alternatively, you may wish to draw the glass from a seated viewpoint where the viewpoint is not as steep.

If you choose to fill the whole of your page in a close-up viewpoint, you will still need to consider the angle and perspective of the ellipses you will need to draw at the initial stages of your drawing.

Also, make a faint mark oh the paper to indicate where you will need to draw the water.

How To Draw A Realistic Glass Of Water

Here are the basic steps that well take to create our realistic drawing of a glass of water. Remember, since were combining graphite with charcoal, the order in which we apply the mediums is important.

  • Draw a contour line drawing.
  • Add light mid tones.
  • Develop the strongest highlights and light values with white charcoal.
  • Develop the darker tones and shadows.
  • Refine the drawing and add a cast shadow.

Drawing Waves Splashes And Water In Motion

Almost any ocean or lake has waves. Sometimes those waves can be small, a few bits of motion upon a surface. Its almost like fabric blowing in the wind, says illustrator and comic artist Jonathan Case. Thats what the surface tension of water looks like. That surface can flow gently or rapidly, but as it flows you can use bubbles and water ripples to communicate the motion. If you want to communicate the flow of water, you need to pick areas where you have these nice, soft blowing lines interrupted by these shorter, bubbled areas, says Case.

A calm, rippling surface, though, is often interrupted by waves and splashes. Those waves and splashes are not singular geometric shapes. They are complex, temporary, and always unique. One of the most important things is to use a variety of shapes, says Case. Big shapes and little shapes. Whether its water pouring onto something or water on the surface, you want to find ways of organizing small and large forms to make things look more organic. Avoid uninterrupted lines. Straight lines are products of architecture and engineering, but natural shapes tend to bend, develop, and branch into other things. Wavy lines are more the norm, and if a single line continues unimpeded, add in something to interrupt it and make it more organic.

    A White Charcoal Pencil

How to Draw a Glass of Water

Highlights are especially important in a drawing that features a highly reflective surface like glass. In a typical drawing on white paper, highlights must be preserved or avoided while graphite is added. But since were working on toned paper, we can add the highlights with a white medium. In this case, white charcoal is used to develop the highlights and lighter values.

Although graphite and charcoal are different mediums, we can still use them together with success. But, the order in which we apply the media is important. White charcoal doesnt cover heavy graphite applications easily. Graphite can be applied over white charcoal applications with better success, but the reverse of this is not suggested. For this reason, well address many of the highlights early in the drawing process, before darkening the areas of darkest shadow.

If you dont have a white charcoal pencil, a white colored pencil can be substituted. It should be noted, however, that we use blending stumps to blend the white charcoal applications. Since colored pencils do not blend in the same way as a powdery material like charcoal, youre likely to see different results in your drawing.

    The Drawing Salve It Works

This drawing salve is homemade, easy to make, and works powerfully. The jar I have is many years old, and the salve still works well. A few days ago I cleaned up broken glass in my kitchen. Apparently I missed a small sliver, for it found its way onto the bottom of my heel. That wouldnt happen, I know, if I didnt go barefoot.

I hobbled around on my foot all day because I couldnt find the sliver. That evening, Dave clipped some skin to try to find the problem but couldnt. So . . . I got out my mamas Tseek Shmih and applied it to a bandaid, which I put onto the sore.

Tseek Shmih is Pennsylvania Dutch for pull and salve. The English translation is drawing salve. My kids call it Tseek Shmih as well. Thats because its the only thing they have heard me reference it by. You pronounce it just like it reads phonetically.

And that sliver of glass? I pulled the Band aid off the next morning, and I knew the drawing salve had done its work because the pain was gone. Like I said, this drawing salve pulls out pus, splinters, glass and anything else too small to find with a magnifying glass.

Draw The Label & Finish The Line Drawing

Roughly in the middle of the bottle add the label. Draw it with two curved lines. One that is just barely curved for the top and a second more curved one for the bottom. Once done you should have a full outline drawing of the water bottle.

At this point confirm that you are happy with the way everything looks and make any corrections if required. Afterwards trace over your drawing with a black pen, marker or darker pencil lines.

Add Color & Finish The Glass Drawing

To finish the drawing of the glass of water you can color it a grey/blue and the water inside of it a light blue with a slightly darker surface.

You will notice that the glass also has a highlight area on its left side. You can leave this area white as you color or shade it in very lightly with the same color as each area it overlaps.

The highlight is important as it will make the glass a shiny/reflective look.

Apply The Finishing Touches To Your Drawing

How to Draw a Glass of Water

Once you have completed adding shading and detail, you may feel that you finished your drawing. However, it is a good idea to check your picture and see if you can perfect it.

Looking at the drawing from a distance is an excellent way to look at the overall look of your drawing. You may need to add darker areas of tone or blend and graduate the shading further.

Turn the page upside down as we mentioned earlier is also an excellent way to spot imperfections and alter aspects of the drawing which you dont quite like or feeling need rearranging.

Another task which will improve the overall look of your drawing once it is complete is to clean the edges of the page will an eraser. This is an effective way to reduce the number of marks and smudges that appear on the page as you are drawing.

Once you have completed the drawing and corrected any errors, your drawing will be ready for display.

    Color The Bottle Of Water

To color the bottle you can make the lid blue, the bottle grey, the water light blue and the label a light yellow/brown. You can use whatever medium you like or a mix of a few of them. For example you can color the lid with a marker to get the darker blue and the water with a pencil to get the lighter blue.

You can also leave a highlight running along the side of the bottle as shown in the example. If you do wish to add it you should very lightly outline it in pencil before coloring. If it appears to be a little too bright you can lightly go over it with blue for the parts over the water and yellow for the part over the label.

Once done color you should be finished with the drawing.

    Draw A Contour Line Drawing

Well begin the drawing with a contour line drawing using the H graphite pencil. This means that well concentrate only the outlines that we observe from the subject. These contours not only include the lines that define the boundaries of the glass, but also the shapes of different values that we see.

To ensure accuracy, we can use measuring techniques. Using your pencil as a measuring tool, you can make comparisons between different areas of the drawing. Look for opportunities by comparing larger shapes first.

In this case, the drawing thats created is the same size as the printed reference photo. This means that we can measure on the photo reference and use the exact measurement on the drawing surface.

Using measuring we can draw the basic shape of the glass, including the ellipse that represents the opening at the top. Ellipses are a distortion of a circle. In many cases, an ellipse is simply an oval. But depending on the angle, an ellipse can be more complicated.

Well also add the shapes of value that we observe within the glass and the water. Look for contrast when you draw these shapes. If you find it difficult to see these shapes of value, try squinting at the subject. By squinting, we simplify the details and often easily recognize the larger shapes of darks and lights.

Draw The Inner Bottom Of The Glass

Glasses tend to have a fairly thick bottoms . To show this draw an oval shape a little bit above the the curve of the bottom of the glass .

If you want to have the glass filled with milk or juice draw only the bottom half of the oval .

As the milk/juice are not transparent the back/far side of the bottom of the glass will not be visible.

How to Draw a Glass of Water

Begin by drawing your picture on the bottom of the glass dish. Make sure that all that everything on your figure connects, or touches. If they dont connect, your picture is more likely to fall apart.

Let the picture dry for a minute or so.

Slowly pour the water into the glass dish. It is best to not pour the water directly on the picture. Once the water starts to cover the picture, you will see the picture start to life off the bottom of the dish. Once the picture is all the way removed from the bottom of the dish, you can carefully start to move the dish around to watch the picture float.

You can do any shape you choose. We did strawberries, cherries, rainbows, shapes, and stick people. The stick people were tons of fun because they looked like they were dancing!

Some helpful tips that we learned as we went along:

  • Make sure every part of your picture touches. If it doesnt touch, it will more than likely detach from the rest of the picture.
  • Let the picture dry for about a minute or so before adding the water.
  • It doesnt matter if the water is warm or cold, but do not pour the water directly onto the picture. This will make it fall apart.
  • Wait for the picture to lift off the floor of the pan before moving the pan around.
  • HAVE FUN!!!

The How To On Making The Drawing Salve

I have never made this salve, so I called my cousin to ask her about the directions. Hilda says she has made this salve dozens of times. She has given it for Christmas gifts to her children who are now grandparents.

Back in the day, they used camphor cakes, which take a long time to melt down. Camphor oil would probably work. Make sure you get rosin instead of resin, because rosin takes less time to melt down. I purchased rosin from a music store years ago for our sons violin bow. If you know someone who raises bees, you can get beeswax from them.

To make this salve, you will want to use an old kettle that you dont care if you cant get clean. You can do it on top of the stove in a double-boiler or in the oven. If you use the oven, know that it will take several hours. Youll just need to keep an eye on it as it melts. When it is nearly melted, stir it so it keeps melting. When it is completely melted and mixed together, ladle it into jars. Once it is cool, cover with a lid.

Added note: I realize that finding these ingredients and paying for them can be a hassle. Posted a week later, inthis post, you can find a similar homemade drawing salve that is ready-made for you.

Establish The Composition Of Your Drawing

As with all sketches and drawing from life, you will only ever produce a genuine looking drawing if you study the subject directly from observation. This will allow you to focus on and investigate the subject carefully in the round.

Please take a look at this drawing and sketching video course I have created. Use this link.

Drawing from direct observation will also enable you to look closely at the details and variations of shadow and reflection that you will need to render and sketch with your pencil.

The first task you will need complete is organizing the layout or composition of your drawing. As this is an essential a simple shape, the primary consideration is the placement of the glass.

Centrally position the glass on a piece of paper with a light source emanating from one side. Additionally, of a white piece of paper beneath the glass will make it stand out visually. This also has the benefit of separating it fro the rest of its environment.

You are now ready to begin the process of drawing and sketching the glass onto your sheet.

Refine The Drawing And Add A Cast Shadow

How to Draw a Glass of Water – Hyperrealistic Drawing – Tutorial

The glass and water are nearly complete. Well now need to add a cast shadow underneath and behind the glass. But as youll notice from the reference photo, were not dealing with an ordinary cast shadow.

The glass and the water are transparent objects. Light passes through them, instead of being reflected back towards the light source. The light actually becomes more intense as its refracted, resulting in an area of very light value where wed expect to see the darkest shadow.

Before we develop the darkest areas of cast shadow, well first need to define the shape of this strong light. Well first define the outer edges of the shape with a 2B pencil.

Then well use the white charcoal pencil to fill in the shape with a heavy application.

A blending stump is used to smooth this application and work the material into the texture of the paper. This results in a more natural and consistent shadow.

We can then extend the area of darkest tone to fill in the remainder of the largest area within the core shadow. Youll notice that there is primary area of cast shadow. This is a shape that resembles a skewed version of the shape of the glass. This area of darkest value is called the occlusion shadow.

But the cast shadow itself extends outward a little further. This area is slightly lighter, but still considered part of the cast shadow. Since this area is lighter, the HB pencil is applied and gently blended with the blending stump.
