How to Draw a Golden Eagle

Very much like other lessons here on the site, begin by drawing the eye of your eagle. Notice below how Ive included the brow by drawing a curved line above the circular area? I recommend you do something similar as it keeps with the “serious I mean business” look of the eagle.

In four phases, heres how to draw the eye and beak of your cartoon eagle

If youd rather your eagle have a closed beak, heres what to do. In the second image above beginning at the corner of the mouth/beak, draw the lower portion so that it doesnt drop down as far. Draw it so that while still curving, it stays closer to the top of the beak eventually meeting with the line, just under the tip.

When youre finished the eye and beak, lets continue on with the rest of its body

Learn How To Draw A Bald Eagle With This Easy Step By Step Tutorial With Just A Few Distinctive Lines You Know Exactly Who He Is

For a classroom-tested drawing project that relates to studies about American symbols, you cant get much better than this bald eagle tutorial. I used it many times while teaching in the classroom, and the simple steps worked for students even as young as kindergarten.

This tutorial uses lots of basic shapes, and just a few that overlap each other. The head is in front of the shoulders, and the feet in front of the branch. Young artists need practice with these concepts before they go on to other ones.

Older students could go on to add a little more shadow, like ones that are hinted at in the sample drawing. Simply pressing harder on one side with the brown crayon, or adding a touch of gray to the head, will make the bird instantly look more round. Shadows are great that way, and testing them out on simple shapes is a smart way to start.

    First Step Cartoon Eagle Framework

A good framework from which to draw your raptor can vary, much the same as it can with any other drawing. Again, check out the link mentioned above and youll see that even the most simple of frameworks does the job.

In comparison, the framework youre drawing here is a bit more complex. Its a better reflection of how a real bald eagle would look, but still keeps to the simplistic nature of drawing cartoons.

Well, time to get at it. Begin your framework by sketching out a circle for the head and an oval for the body just like Ive done in the first example. Do this and then follow along with the next to steps below

In this lesson, the eagle youre drawing is in a standing/perched position, with its wings folded in. The three triangles above, from top to bottom represent the wing, tail and leg of your cartoon eagle.

Draw your triangles similar to mine. Keep your lines light at this point. And when youre done this, go ahead and follow through with a few more lines marking the eye, beak position, the rest of your eagles foot and a couple lines to . Ive made them green so that they stand out better.

All done? Good stuff! Now lets continue, beginning with the eye and beak.

  • 3Attach two smaller oblongs on the branch. They will serve as the eagles feet. Add a rectangle below the body to make the tail.
  • 4Draw details on the head, like the eyes and feathers.
  • 5Sketch the wings on the body of the eagle delicately.
  • 6Add claws to the eagles feet.
  • 7Draw feathers on the tail.

  • Final Shading Of The Body

Now you need to unify all the feathers and at the same time adding some very subtle shading. Use the finest nib you have. Start stroking some long thin lines at a slight diagonal. This is the start of the cross-hatching technique.

The final cross-hatching is done to build up the tonal ranges as well.

Finish off by adding the final shading to the top chest feathers.

Next, a series of small Vs above the feather lines help to give off the impression of many small feathers. This is a very easy task giving off the desired effect with little time and energy spent.

You could keep going if you like add some lines on the feet, draw in a nostril perhaps even some more feather lines. But in keeping to the spirit of drawing simple cartoons, Id say that youre in a pretty good position to wrap things up!

Please PAUSE the “How to Draw a Golden Eagle” video after each step to draw at your own pace.

For the first few steps, don’t press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a big circle as a guide for the first part of the golden eagle’s body. First draw four small marks to indicate the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it’s easy to erase if you make a mistake. But the circle doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide. If you do want to draw a perfect circle, trace the outer rim of a cup, a lid or any other object with a circular edge.

Step 2: Draw another circle on the top, left side as a guide for the head. Pay attention to the size of this circle in relation to the first one. It should be about one-fourth the size of the first one. Pay attention to the distance between the two circles as well. Don’t place the golden eagle’s head too far away from the body.

Step 3: Draw two intersecting lines inside the head to help you place the golden eagle’s facial features later on. The end result should look similar to the scope of a lens.

Step 4: Draw a small arc on the left side of the head as a guide for the golden eagle’s beak. Pay attention to the size of this arc in relation to the rest of the head.

Step 5: Draw two curved lines that connect the head to the body to form the guide for the golden eagle’s neck.
