Gorillas are large primates of the group known as the Great Apes, native to the African continent. Several subspecies of gorilla have been documented, ranging in habitat from jungles to mountain forests.

While the gorilla has appeared in the art of its native land for millennia, it did not enter western popular culture until the 1800’s. Gorillas were then depicted either in natural history publications or as fearsome monsters, such as in the film King Kong . Modern animation has seen a number of gorilla characters, notably the many gorillas in Disney’s Tarzan , including Terk, Kala, and Kerchak, and DC Comics super villain, Gorilla Grod.

You Can Refer To The Simple Step

Step 1

Start with the gorillas head. Make the lower jaw smaller and narrower than the flat top of the head.

Step 2

At the top of the lower jaw draw a short curve to make the mouth contour. Just above along the muzzle line draw a big round nose. Right above that adds two small eyes. Directly behind the eye draw a semi-circle shaped ear.

Step 3

Draw a long curve for the back. The back is a rounded down bump.

Step 4

Now draw the thick forearm. The shoulders begin right below the ears. Shoulder to right then left to hands. Gorillas go on their knuckles. Bend your fingers along the bottom. The curve makes the back of the arm up almost to the back. Draw a short curve about half along the line to make the abs.

Step 5

Now add a thick forearm. The right side of the second arm begins just below the muzzle. It went straight to the bottom-touching hand. Then it comes back up to the shoulders.

Step 6

Next draw a hind leg continuing the line down the back leg. It should only be as thick as the front arm. Bring the front of the foot line up almost to the back line.

Step 7

Next, add a half-foot hind leg along the back of the first hind leg. It will be shorter than the other hind legs but only so thick. So you have completed the drawing.

    Gorillas Anatomy For Artists

Beginning tutorials often show steps to make you draw a gorilla, but the importance of a anatomy study is often neglected.

An anatomy study is very important because then you learn to understand the shapes and planes of the animal. Also when you get familiar with animal anatomy, it can tell you a lot about the place it inhabits in its ecosystem.

I notice when I draw the animal and I didnt study its anatomy I run into all kinds of obstacles.

I question myself How does the animal walk?, What are the freedom of movement? or what are those shapes doing there? and there are countless questions that I dont have the answer to before I start drawing.

When I study the animal extensively, I get a better idea of how the animal is constructed. Eventually You will see what happens under the skin, the muscles and bones which makes the animal uptill a beautiful machine.

Above you will find my detailed study for the skeleton and muscles. The most striking thing I find is the resemblance to humans.

It is a beautiful animal which consists almost entirely of muscles. This is quite surprising when you consider that gorillas dont do much other than eat.

In the study shown below the skeleton, I tried to create shading. In this way the animal is translated more into surfaces and shapes.

It does not have to be a perfect drawing, but sketching the rough lines or proportions can help a lot.
