A graduation cap is really recognizable and has a distinct shape that may seem difficult to draw, but its actually made of a few simple shapes. You can either draw the graduation cap like youre looking down at it from the top or like youre looking up at it from the bottom. While youll use the same basic shapes for each view of the cap, whats visible in the drawing will vary slightly. Once youre finished, personalize your drawing with your own schools colors!

Finish Off Your Graduation Hat Drawing With Some Color

Now that you have finished your graduation hat drawing, this is the part where you can complete it with some amazing colors!

We kept the colors more muted with some dark grey for the hat itself and a darker yellow for the tassel.

These are just a suggestion, but you could use any colors that you love for this picture. If you drew any extra details such as someone wearing the hat or some decoration on it, then you can incorporate more color into these aspects as well.

We look forward to seeing which incredible colors and art mediums you choose to finish off this drawing!

How To Make A Graduation Shadow Box

How to Draw a Graduation Cap and Diploma

In Cricut Design Space, spell out the phrase youd like on top of the glass of the shadow box. Measure it so that it will fit on the glass. I used the Cricut Varsity font.

Cut out the image from Vinyl. Peel away the excess. Apply a bit of transfer tape to the top of the image. Then peel off. Place the image/transfer tape on the glass and use the Cricut tool to adhere.

The last thing you need to do is peel away the transfer tape.

For the last step arrange the items you want in the shadow box.

Thats it! There are so many fun possibilities when it comes to decorating graduation caps! You can even design your own lettering if youd like.

Dont Think Too Much And Go With Your Heart

If you are worrying too much about the decoration of your graduation cap, you will probably lose the fun out of it.

You might be thinking too much rather than enjoying while decorating the cap.

Be happy and proud of your success!

If you are wondering about the theme of the decoration, the best solution is to follow your heart.

Think about the moments that you admire and things that you love.

Based on that, pick something that will mean something to you, your family, and your friends.

Materials For A Graduation Cap Drawing

  • Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tips.
  • BlackSharpie Marker. These fine point permanent marker pens make nice black outlines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they get wet. Use them with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath to protect your tables.
  • Prang Crayons. These are a bit softer than other crayons so they sometimes look like oil pastels. They also have a some nice brown shades that Crayola does not have unless you buy their larger boxes.
  • Crayola Crayons. The reliable brand that always works well. The 24 pack has some of my favorite golden orange and yellow colors that seem a bit richer and warmer than the ones Prang has.

Drawing A Graduation Cap From Above

  • 1Draw a horizontal rhombus for the top of the cap. Start by drawing a straight diagonal line going up from the edge of your paper. Dont make the line too long, or else you wont be able to fit the rest of the cap on the page. At the end of your first line, add another diagonal line going down thats the same length and angle as the first one. Make a line that is parallel to the first one you drew starting from the end of the second line. Finally, connect the ends of the first and last line you drew.XResearch source
  • The rhombus will look like a sideways diamond where each side is the same length.
  • You can use a straightedge or ruler if you want to make the sides of your rhombus precise.
  • 2Add 2 slanted vertical lines down from the sides of the cap. Start your line halfway along one of the bottom sides of the cap. Extend the line down slightly slanted away from the center of the cap so its half the length of one of the rhombuss sides. Draw another diagonal line down from the center of the other bottom side so its the same length as the first one you drew.XResearch source
  • The diagonal lines coming down from the top of the cap form the sides of the skullcap, which is the part that goes around your head.
  • Sketch in your lines lightly just in case you have to erase and draw the curved line again.
  • You can draw the string coming down from either the left or right side of the button.

Next Draw The Underside Of The Graduation Hat

You have the flat top of the hat, so now you can draw the underside, which will be the part that goes over your head.

Use some straight lines down from the base of the flat top for the side of this portion, and then use a curved line underneath that connects the two vertical lines.

Thats all you have to do for this step, and once you have added this portion, you are ready to move on to step 3!

    Diy Graduation Cap Decoration Ideas

Ive noticed a trend lately of I know that this is not allowed at some schools, but I still think the idea is genius! Ive seen all kinds of graduation cap decorations ranging from inspirational to funny. I think that it is a great way to celebrate what is a pretty amazing accomplishment.

Im not sure if my kids can wear a decorated grad cap, but I thought that it would be fun to decorate some for them as a keepsake. Im going to take the decorated caps and use them in Graduation shadow boxes.

Since I didnt want to change the caps they would be getting at school, I ordered an extra set of caps online. My plan is to replace the tassel with their actual graduation tassel in the shadow box after they graduate. Im also going to add a few photos of the commencement ceremony.

For those of you with eagle eyes looking at the shadow box and wondering why its not complete. My oldest graduated in December from BYU. They dont do commencement in December so she will walk in April, but her graduation year is still last year. So we dont have an official graduation tassel or photo of her to use in the box yet.

To decorate my Graduation Caps and matching shadow box, I used my Cricut Machine. In the Cricut Design space, I found loads of fun images perfect for graduation caps. All of the images shown in this post are Cricut files, not mine.

You Can Refer To The Simple Step

      Step 1

Start by drawing a rhombus or an inclined square with sides of equal length. This outlines the upper part of the hat.

      Step 2

Draw lines parallel to the sides of the rhombus. Connect these lines to the three points of the shape with short lines. This forms the near edge of the top of the hat, giving it a three-dimensional shape.

      Step 3

Draw two lines going down from the top of the hat, at half of each near edge. Notice that the lines diverge slightly outward at a diagonal angle.

      Step 4

Use a long, curved line to wrap the bottom of the hat.

      Step 5

Draw a small oval in the center of the top of the hat. Draw a parallel curve with one side of the oval to give it a three-dimensional shape. This is the button to which the tassel will be attached.

      Step 6

Draw a pair of parallel curves that go diagonally from the node to the edge of the hat, then hang down. This is the sequence of tassels.

      Step 7

Remove the guides from the rewind.

      Step 8

At the end of the tassel, draw a circle. Below the circle, draw a series of flat ovals. This represents the top of the tentacle. Add the scroll to the hat.
