Six Steps To Realistic Hands

A step-by-step approach can help demystify the process of drawing hands, as well as make sure your illustrations look anatomically correct at every stage. Comic book artist Megan Levens uses a six-step process for hand drawing, starting with basic bone structure and building up to details like fingernails and shading.

Step 1: Start with bone structure.

Your first layer should be the bones of the hand, the carpals. Dont worry about making it pretty this step is about laying the foundation for an anatomically correct hand. Just as the bones are the framework of the body, bones will also be the framework of your drawing. Each finger radiates out at a different angle, notes Levens. They shouldnt all point straight ahead together. Daviscourt also recommends starting from the wrist at this step because the wrist is where the lines of the hand start to intersect visually.

To make your hands look realistic, consider the height differences between your fingers. The middle finger should be the tallest, with the ring finger and index finger on the downward slope of the arch, and the little finger finishing out the line. The thumb is an outlier from the rest and should sit farther apart from the others.

Step 2: Mark your knuckles.

Step 1

The next important fact: the tips of the fingers and knuckles are rounded. Two fingers lie on the sides of the line drawn in the middle of the palm. The tendons of the middle finger on the back of the palm divide it in half. It is important to note the fact that the thumb may be at right angles to the rest of the fingers.

The thumb mainly moves toward the palm , and can also move toward the back, while the rest of the fingers can only move inward. When the fingers are bent, wrinkles form under the knuckles. Pay attention to the fact that on the back of the hand the bend of the knuckle is directed downward, the further the fingers bend, the steeper the bend.

Step 2

The middle finger is the main finger, from which the measurement of the palm begins. The length of this finger from its tip to the last knuckle is almost equal to half a palm. The width of the palm is slightly larger than the length of the half palm on the inside.

The first or index finger almost reaches the nail of the middle finger along its length. The ring finger is almost equal to the length of the index finger. The little finger almost reaches the highest knuckle of the ring finger.

How To Draw Hands: How The Hand And Fingers Move

Now youve learned how to draw the basic shape of the hand from both sides, lets take a look at how the fingers move and how you can draw them more accurately.

First, lets take a look at how your fingers move without bending them.

Look at the top of your hand and fan your fingers out as far as you can, like in the illustration above. Notice how you can only fan them so far?

Its the small details like this that will make a big difference to how realistic your drawings and paintings look.

For this next exercise, well use the length of the forefinger as our main reference measurement like in the illustration.

The main points to remember are:

  • The maximum opening between the thumb and forefinger is about one-and-a-half times the length of the forefinger . So, its measurement 1 plus half this measurement again.
  • The maximum opening between the forefinger and ring finger is the same length as the forefinger
  • The maximum opening between your ring finger and little finger is the same length as the forefinger .Try it yourself by holding your first three fingers together and moving your little finger as far as it will go.Youll notice the little finger isnt extended as far as this in our illustration, but weve drawn the measurement anyway to show you how far it could go.
  • The maximum angle possible between your thumb and little finger when fanned out is 90 degrees. Again, try it yourself and see this measurement in action.

Analyzing The Proportions Of The Hand

Study the proportions of the fingers.

The fingers and the palm of the hand should be roughly the same length. The tip of the thumb if drawn at a 45 degree angle to the hand should reach to just slightly below the knuckle bone of the index finger.

The fingers consist of 3 parts with the distance from the tip of the fingers to the top joint being the shortest and the distance from the knuckles to the bottom join being the longest.

    Important Landmarks For Drawing Hands

How to Draw Hand – Easy

Highlighting anatomical landmarks and sometimes exaggerating them in your hand drawings will help create expressive and believable drawings.

When you are looking at a painting of an old master or a modern-day artist you really like, where anatomical landmarks seem to have been subdued and, on the surface, it may appear as though there are a bunch of straight lines creating very straight fingers barely indicating the knuckles or most masses of the palm. When you see this, know that this is only what seems to appear on the surface. Because if you are looking at a great and believable drawing of hands there is no doubt that anatomical landmarks are properly indicated, just very subtly and in a way that could be impossible to detect to an untrained eye. Yet, trained or untrained, we all see the resulting beautiful drawing.

This is why I highly recommend that if you are interested in drawing hands well that you take my 10-day hand drawing challenge. I vividly remember very subtle changes in lines and angles that indicated proper anatomical placement of features in many master drawings that I have reviewed and that I personally could not even spot until about day 5 of the drawing challenge.

With that in mind, lets look at the most prominent landmarks to look for in your reference, and to indicate your hand drawings.

    2. The second knuckle is larger and higher than the rest. It creates an arch pointed upward when the fist is formed:

    3. The palm is made up of three sections:

I can also begin to place fingernails and render out the side of the palm.

Create The Illusion Of A Light Source

We see objects and make sense of the world around us based on the light. It is the light that informs us of the form of the objects that we see. Every drawing needs to have a defined light source. We can create the illusion of light through our use of value, or the darkness or lightness of a color.

The light source is defined by factors that are related to value. On the side of the hand that receives the light source, we will see highlights which are communicated by tints . Areas that protrude will likely be areas of highlight.

On the opposite side of the light source, we will see shadows. These areas will be communicated through darker values. Areas that recede will likely be areas of shadow.

Make sure to include a full range a value when you draw hands. Remember, it is the value that tells the viewer about the form of the hand.

Nothing drives me crazier than to see a student draw a figure and hide the hands! There’s no need for that! It’s not hard to draw hands!

Hand washing or hand hygiene is important to everyone’s health. Long ago, before the discovery of germs, people thought that sickness was caused by “miasma” or “bad air.” It wasn’t until the mid-1800s that doctors and nurses realized how important handwashing was in protecting their patients from infection.

In an age of global pandemics, the need for good handwashing practices is more important than ever. According to the Centers for Disease Control, you should wash your hands before you eat, after using the toilet, before and after caring for a sick person or treating a wound, and after you cough, sneeze, blow your nose, touch your pet, or do anything else that could dirty your hands, even with microscopic germs.

Did you know? Germs like coronavirus are destroyed by soap, but the process takes time. After soaping up your hands, you should wash them for at least 20 seconds to let the germ-killing soap do its job.
