The fastest way to add a horizontal line or rule is to use the AutoFormat feature. When you type certain characters three times on their own line and then press Enter, those characters instantly become a horizontal line.

The line is inserted for the full width of the page. When inserted into a column, the line is inserted to match the width of the column. To add text above the line, put your cursor where you want the text and begin typing.

Place the cursor in the spot where you would like to start your horizontal line.

Move your cursor to select the horizontal or vertical line and press Delete or Backspace on the keyboard to delete the line. This method is also appliable to the borderlines.
Click on the horizontal line to activate it, then use the Delete or Backspace key to remove it.
How Can I Format A Horizontal Line In Word 2016
This was easy in Word 2011 that I was using previously – simply double click the line an a host of useful options appears .
Can’t figure it out in the new Word 2016. Double clicking the line simply selects it. Right clicking the selected line allows me to select ‘Borders and Shading’, on which dialogue box there is an option for ‘Horizontal Line…’ bottom left. Selecting this takes me to a file open dialogue box, which is certainly not where I want to be.
Always found it very useful to be able to easily edit the horizontal line… If anyone knows if it is still possible to edit the horizontal line as was possible previously please let me know.
