How to draw a Horse Eye

The horse is one of the most beautiful and graceful animals in the world. That is why we created this guide on how to draw a horse face.

This tutorial on how to draw a horse face will be somewhat similar to our previous tutorial on drawing a horse head. This lesson is actually a revised and improved version of the previous lesson. Here we tried to make the process of drawing a horse face even more intuitive and simple.

If you follow all the steps, you will end up with a fairly realistic horse face drawing.

Add The Neck And Ears

Although this is about drawing a horses head, their heads tend to look very odd without at least a hint of the neck, as this adds depth, and will also let you fill in a mane later. To draw the horses neck, you are going to start at your very top line, where the horses skull is.

Continue the curve a short way, and then angle round and draw a straight line down, just past the horses jawline.

Next, put your pencil on the curve of the horses jaw, around the left-hand lower edge of your guide circle, and draw a similar line heading down a little way below the horses body. Your necklines should follow roughly the same angle as each other, so the horses neck is a consistent thickness.

To add the ears, youre going to move back to the top of the horses head. These arent directly at the top, but off to the sides a little.

Position your pencil a bit behind the eye, but higher up, and then draw a loose oval with a pointed tip for the first ear. This should come above the line of the head, so youll need to erase a bit.

The second ear will be behind the skull and should come to a similar height. Again, draw two curved lines pulling into a point at the tip of the ear.

Draw A Horse Eye Preliminary Sketch

We begin to draw the horses eye with an initial sketch. Pull a lot, start its dark to look at the drawing screen. Pay attention to eye pencil strokes to instruct yourself. Describe the actual eye structures and lashes. Prepare rough instructions for wrinkles, creases, and lashes coming out, explaining which direction they are going and how long they are instructions for eyelids.

Horses Eye The first colored layer

Pull-on the pupils and eyelashes with your strokes going in the same direction in a hurry. The eye reflects many details and lights at close range, so it is quite possible to keep the camera reflecting yourself in the photos. Eliminate this argument while drawing the eye. The eyelids, the size and shape of the eyelids vary from horse to father and from breed to breed. It is essential to study the different horses and observe the differences to accurately show the shape and structure of each horses vision and expression. Note that this sketch is more detailed than a finished drawing because it is very close.

How To Draw Horse Head Muscles

You can draw a horse head without any muscles, but they make a drawing more realistic. Lets learn how to simulate some anatomy in a simple way.

Outline the cheek. Theres a bony protrusion on top of it, very important for a realistic look.

Draw an oval between the cheek and muzzle. Its a complex of various muscles, but it usually looks like one thick muscle and its easier to remember this way.

Connect each nostril and the eye with two interconnecting muscles.

Draw two stretched muscles under that oval in the middle.

Accentuate the flat forehead. Theres no muscles here, so its form should be very clear.

Close the outline of the head.

If you want, you can add more details to the muscles this way:

You can now finish the drawing! Keep in mind that horses have a horizontal pupil in their eyes just like goats. In most cases its not visible because the eyes are brown or black, but remember it if you want to give your horse blue eyes!

How To Draw A Horse Head

Start with a shape of a flattened teardrop. No matter what perspective you use for this drawing, you need to be able to visualize this form in your head.

Draw a line to the mouth, and end it with a sphere. The space between both forms should be roughly smaller than the sphere.

Connect both forms with another line to create the lower part of the head.

Create the sides of the head with two lines. This side line should be placed roughly in two-thirds of the heads height.

Draw space for the eyes and nose over these lines.

The top of the head is flattened and it has a certain shape. Draw it, connecting eyes and nose with it.

Draw a smaller sphere inside the mouth sphere. This will be the space for the actual muzzle.

Cut the sphere in thirds and draw the mouth line, finishing it with round corners.

Eyes should be slightly protruding, so add humps behind them.

Draw two spheres on the top of the head to create the space for ears.

The ears should be shaped like narrow ovals stuck to the spheres.

The ears have pointed tips directed towards the middle.

OK, the general shape of the head is done! Lets draw the details now, one by one.

Add The Mane & Erase Unnecessary Guidelines

Let’s draw a realistic horse eye | Pastel Pencils

Now that the hard part is over you can reward yourself with a bit of creativity by designing your horse’s mane. If you like longer manes, think about how it will frame your horse’s face.

Once you’re content with the final drawing, it’s time to erase the basic shapes from the first step. At this time, you can look over your horse and check with your reference photo see if any adjustments need to be made. You can also add the pupil and lashes to the eye if you haven’t done so already.

Optional: Add decorative elements

Even if you’re only drawing this horse head for practice, why not take one more step and make it a complete illustration? To make an easy border, all you’ll need is a ruler or protractor. For a square border, measure a box around the horse’s face. Alternatively, use the protractor to draw a circle. You can then draw small dots along the curved line for a more delicate effect.

If you want to fill in the empty space, consider adding some flora, wheat, trees, or another animal.

The place we see is essential here as well so that it can be successful in achieving critical expression. Note that the horse has a horizontally placed, oval-shaped pupil compared to the vertical slits of a pupil placed in a perfectly round center in the eyes of a cat or a human. Heres what the last eye view will look like. This tutorial will take you through the steps to draw this eye with a colored pencil.
