How to Draw Noses – The Simple Way!

If you want to draw the Human Face, you should first draw the Eyes correctly. Eyes communicate the mood of the person in your drawing. It is important to try and get the facial features right if the face is the central point of your drawing. More specifically, the eyes and the lips are typically the most important elements of any portrait. Therefore, it is risky to allow any imperfections in those areas, as the whole drawing might be distorted. The portrait might look nothing like the person you are trying to draw. This lesson will show you how to draw human lips in pencil step by step.

Break The Nose Down Into Its Most Basic Shapes

Once youve familiarized yourself with the anatomy of a nose, take a look at the of the schnoz youd like to draw. For this lesson, it is beneficial to sketch several noses to really appreciate just how different this body part can be.

Based on what you know about its featuresincluding the bridge, tip, and nostrilsbreak them down into basic shapes. Using an HB pencil, youll draw a long oval for the bridge and smaller circles for the tip of the nose as well as nostrils. While youre just getting into the basics of how the nose is shaped, make sure you pay attention to the width of its features.

The Central Often Ignored Feature Of The Face

Its easy to overlook noses. When most people look at a human face, they make eye contact. Or peoples eyes are drawn to the mouth to see if someone is smiling or not. A persons haircut, hat, or earrings might all draw attention before a nose does. When an illustrator sits down to draw, they may have a good idea about these other features or have noticed a strong jawline or a tilt to the eyes. But they might find themselves stumped when it comes to even the basic shape of the nose. And, after a few missteps, perhaps they find themselves reaching for their eraser.

Noses are important, though. Without the right nose, a character can look distorted, incomplete, or simply not right. Here are a few things to keep in mind when drawing noses and some simple steps and tips to help you illustrate those middle-of-the-face features.

Finally Lets Draw The Nose

It is time to start drawing the nose.

If you completed the previous steps in this guide, you now have a good understanding of the anatomy of the nose and its basic form. You are also able to simplify the form of the nose in your mind when looking at reference, and you can imagine and visualize the form as it appears on paper before you begin to draw. You also have some good picture references of the nose in front of you.

In this section, lets look at how I painted this nose step by step. We will use a digital drawing I made in Procreate, but same concepts apply regardless of the medium you are using.

If you are following along in Procreate, I used the Sketching HB Pencil, the Painting Flat Brush and a Blender , all at default settings.

Note that before following along, its very important to read the anatomy section of this post. You should also be able to visualize a very simplified box-like version of the nose to understand where the planes of the nose turn.

When the basic drawing of the nose is finished, you can add detail to the form if you like. In adding detail you can work on getting the form back to its original complex state that we found in real life. Remember how we simplified the form before drawing it on paper, the detail that is added later can help make the nose look more realistic.

Draw A Nose Easy For Beginners

Step 1 Nose can be of any shape and size. But in general, I will be teaching you draw a normal human nose which is taught first everywhere. Just draw two lines as shown in the figure.

Step 2 Now draw the outline for the wings of the nose. Its breadth is almost half of the perpendicular line. Keep in mind to maintain the proportions.

Step 3 After the markings, it becomes quite easy to shape the nose. Just draw a smooth shape around the wings. Mark the outer areas of the breathing holes.

Step 4 Remove all the outlines and add some definitions on your own. Do not make any mistakes otherwise it may turn too thick or thin.

Step 5 Now at last start giving some shadows to your drawing and with soft strokes. Darken the holes through which we inhale. And then you are complete with your simple human nose.

How To Best Remember The Visible Parts Of The Nose

To help organize the structure in your mind, and to more easily remember the different parts, lets separate these into two groups:

If you draw an imaginary line with your index finger from the top of your nose at the forehead in between the eyes to the very tip of your nose, you have covered the root, the bridge and the tip. Thats our first group.

Our second group is everything that happens underneath and to the sides, the wings the nostrils and the septum.

So the next time you need to remember all parts of the nose to draw, just remember to draw an imaginary line with your index finger from the root of your nose at the forehead through the bridge to the tip. Then, once your index finger is at the bottom of the nose, remember that the wings, nostrils and the septum is the second group. It is an easy way to remember. Try it.

Okay, now we know the visible parts of the nose.

Understanding The Surface Direction Of The Nose

Surface direction lines are useful for shading

In this image, you can see the direction of the surface lines on the nose. As these surface lines move from the side of the nose into the cheek, they get smoother.

Because of this, its not necessary to draw any hard lines separating the nose from the cheek.

Understanding the surface direction of the sides of the nose comes in really handy for when you want to begin adding more detail to your drawing with lighting and shadow.

Exploring The Basic Nose Shape

There are a variety of nose shapes, but most noses in drawings begin as a triangle. Once you have that basic triangle in place, you can do all sorts of other things, Case says. You can give them a hooked nose or make it more rounded or bulbous but youre starting with the triangle shape.

The guidance of the triangle shape is something artists can keep in mind with various perspectives. Lets say were looking up somebodys nostrils, Case says. That triangle shape is going to become a pyramid. If we cut that into various sections, well start understanding where the nostrils should be placed. Shifting perspectives is much easier when you remember that the front view of the nose is basically a triangle, as well.

Nostrils also have a basic shape. Nostrils are almost a comma shape, where the end just tapers off almost to nothing, says Case. Nostrils can be more rounded or elongated, but theyre not perfect circles.

Focus On The Features: The Nose

How to Draw a Nose – Beginners
Understanding the basic structures of the various facial features goes a long way in achieving a realistic depiction.

The features are what make human faces so interesting. Although most features are constructed similarly from person to person, each individual still exhibits subtle and not so subtle differences. For example, each nose has a bridge followed by cartilage and two nostrils, but some noses are thin while others are broad some are turned up and others are hooked and so on.

Here Ill explain the basic structures of the nose and how to draw them.

One of the most distinctive features of the human head is the nose. It protrudes more than any other feature and gives the face depth and character. Although the variety of nose shapes seems endless, all noses have the same basic triangular form: narrow at the top, and wider and fuller at the bottom.

The upper part of the nose, the bridge, is formed by bone. The lower part consists of five pieces of cartilage: Two pieces make up the tip, two make up the wings of the nostrils, and one divides the nostrils.

The Structure of the Nose

A Seen from below, the five pieces of cartilage that make up the lower part of the nose are apparent. The nostrils are closer together toward the tip of the nose and get farther apart toward the cheeks.

B The skin lies smoothly over the bone of the upper nose, usually catching a highlight. Highlights on the tip of the nose will make it appear to come forward.

Shade Around The Nose Bridge And Tip

Shade around the outer part of the bridge and around the inner part of the circle, making a long U shape. You will notice the shading is thicker at the top of the bridge. That is because the bridge of the nose leads into the brow bones. Dont worry if the guidelines you created earlier didnt blend in with your shading. We will darken the drawing later.

Drop The Opacity Of Your Sketch Layer

This step is for digital users. Once you complete your layout drawing, take that layer and drop the opacity to 30%.

Pencil and paper users, make sure to keep your layout drawing very light. If you have trouble sketching light, I would recommend using an H2 grade lead. This lead is hard compared to an HB pencil.
