How To Draw Kids Wearing Face Masks

There are 2 ways to do this step: Ruler or no ruler. I highly recommend using the ruler method for the first couple of faces you draw. Why? Because doing this step without it can throw your proportions off like crazy. Especially if you have trouble locating the center of an object with your eyes. The no ruler method requires you to split multiple sections of the face in half and then in half again.

Ruler Method: Make a ruler beside your drawing that is the same height. The ruler should be marked so there are 8 equal spaces. Always start with the center line.Draw faint lines through the face on the markings labelled CENTER LINE, 2, 3, A, and C. As you get used to this, you wont need to draw the ruler on the side.

No Ruler Method: Without the ruler, I draw lines in this order: CENTER LINE, 2, 3, B, A, C . This is the method I use to draw heads all the time.

A Few Key Points To Remember

Keep the proportion of a child’s head and the other tips mentioned in mind and you’ll be off to a good start. Here are a few more tricks that can help you draw a great portrait.

  • Don’t use a flash photograph. The flash flattens the gentle curves of a child’s face, giving you nothing to model. Opt for a photo with natural lighting instead, preferably a nice, gentle light from the side.
  • Be aware of small, fuzzy snapshots. After all, you can’t draw what you can’t see.
  • Avoid harsh outlines. Sketch softly and use flowing lines. Many of your initial guides will be erased as you work and you don’t want to damage the paper.
  • Use a full range of value and shade skin tones carefully. A child’s skin is very clean and delicate, so your shading technique should follow suit.
  • Use a good, smooth paper and a range of pencils. This will help you achieve those subtle variances in skin tone. If you need to, practice shading beforehand.
  • Reserve whites carefully, especially in the eyes. It’s easier to add tone later than to erase it because you won’t achieve those bright whites needed for the catchlights and whites of the eye.
  • Try to avoid overworking your portrait. Keep your drawing fresh and light and know when you’re done.

Drawing The Female Head

To help you make sure that both sides of the head will be of equal width and that the facial features in later steps will be evenly spaced start your drawing by first making a vertical line through the middle of your drawing area. Next draw a circle for the top part of the head and from that project two lines that first go to the jaw area and then curve inwards and go down again at a sharper angle to finally form the curve of the chin.

As this is a female face for the sake of this tutorial we will make the chin fairly small and narrow.

Sizing Up Tiny Facial Proportions

When compared to an adult’s head, a baby’s head is usually wider and their chins are shorter and more rounded.

In Figure 3, four horizontal lines identify how babies’ features generally fit on their faces. Note the locations of this baby’s features in relation to the following generic guidelines:

  • The eyebrows are on or slightly above line AB.
  • The tops of the ears and eyes are touching or slightly below line AB.
  • The nose and the bottoms of the ears are touching or slightly above line CD.
  • The opening of the mouth is in between lines CD and EF.
  • The lower edge of the jawbone is identified by line GH. The bottom of the chin isn’t a reliable point for measurement because most babies have chubby chins or even double chins.

Figure 3

Vertical guidelines are also helpful for accurately drawing a baby’s facial proportions .

In Figure 4, four lines identify the horizontal placements of the features on a baby’s face. Note the placement of the babies’ features relative to six vertical lines:

  • Lines IJ and ST identify the widest points on a baby’s head.
  • The eyes are located inside the spaces between lines KL and MN, and OP and QR.
  • Most of the nose and mouth fit in the spaces between lines MN and OP.
  • The distance between a baby’s eyes is slightly more than the space between lines MN and OP.

How to Draw a Face for Beginners

  • Sketch the outlines of the head.

The very first step will begin with the simplest geometric shape a usual oval, which is the base of the face.

  • Draw the facial guidelines.

Draw a vertical and horizontal line that should intersect right in the middle of the oval.

  • Draw the eyes on the face.

On the horizontal line draw eyes in the shape of almonds with circular pupils inside them.

  • Add the eyebrows.

The eyebrows are usually the same size as the eyes, or slightly wider. Draw them using two thick lines.

  • Draw the nose.

The tip of the nose is usually located directly between the line of the eyes and the line of the chin.

  • Draw the mouth.

Note that the distance between the mouth, nose, and chin is almost the same.

  • Erase the guidelines and draw the chin.

When erasing the guidelines from the face, try not to touch the important lines of the drawing.

  • Draw the ears.

The upper tip of the ears is straight with the eyebrows, and the lower edge is even with the tip of the nose.

  • Draw hair.

We decided to choose a fairly classic hairstyle. You can repeat the outlines of the hair from our example or choose any other hairstyle.
