Step 1 Make Construction Sketch Of The Dog

As with drawing just about anything you should start your drawing of the dog by first getting its overall proportions. Do an overall very light rough sketch of the shape of the dog. Only include the major parts such as the head , body, legs and tail. Leave out the smaller details for the next step.

You can use basic geometrical shapes where appropriate to help you get the proportions. For example the head is close to a circle and the ears are close to triangles.

Though the sketch stage may look very rough its probably the most important step in the drawing process. As you draw make sure that all of the dogs body parts are the right size in relation to one another.

If you start drawing everything separately or from the smaller details you may later find that different parts of the drawing are too big, too long or too short in comparison to one another. This may lead to you having to start over or having to erase a large part of your drawing.

Learn How To Draw A Labrador One Of The Most Popular Breeds Of Dogs Around Its Easy When You Have Some Step By Step Directions

Labrador Retrievers are perhaps the most recognizable dogs in the country, and every year they are named as the most popular breed in the U.S. Their fun-loving personalities combined with their gentleness and willingness to please their owners makes them the perfect family pet.

This tutorial will help young artists draw a Lab with all their adorable features. The big eyes and floppy ears need to be in the right size, and right place, for them to look like a Lab, and not any other of the many dog breeds that are out there.

Once the drawing is done, their are a few choices for coloring too. Labs not only come in Black, Yellow and Chocolate colors, there are White, Red and Silver breeds too.

Step 2 Make An Outline Drawing

Once you have completed the proportions sketch create an outline drawing and clean up the sketch/guidelines afterwards of the dog and add the details such as the eyes, nose, mouth and patter of the fur.

This step should be fairly simple as long as you correctly proportioned the dog in the previous step.

How To Draw A Yellow Labrador

The head is the only thing to work on in this tutorial, and because of that, well start with a big circle thats sitting right in the middle of the paper . Once its in place, add dividing lines in the upper half of the circle . The next step in this how to draw A Labrador Retriever guide is yet another circle thats covering the bottom half of it .

See those triangles on both sides? They are there for the ears. The eyes should be positioned above the horizontal dividing line . Dont make them too big. The nose reminds that of a piglet . The mouth is the easiest part and makes the doggy look sad .

For the ears to look realistic, youll need to switch from the straight lines to wavy ones . Ok, thats pretty much it for this how to draw A Labrador Retriever tutorial! The final step includes getting rid of the guides . If youre up for it, follow our example and color the head.

Step 4 Fully Shade & Finish The Dog Drawing

Slowly apply more and more layers of shading darkening the fur where appropriate. Remember to apply your strokes in the direction of the fur.

Finally in some places where fur is likely to stick out you can erase the outline of the dog and draw some small strokes there to indicate fur. This can differ depending on the breed of the dog but for this particular example you can replace most of the outline. The fur on the snout, front of the head and front of the bottom half of the legs will be fairly short and smooth and can just be left as a line.

Now that you’ve outlined the shadows and highlights of your dog’s face, you can begin to focus on the details. Begin by gently erasing the guidelines you created.

Next, use your pencil to add more subtle detail. Use a light touch because it’s easier to add more shadow than it is to erase it when you go too dark. Work from dark to light across the entire surface of the drawing, gradually building up the texture.

Use soft strokes where fur is short and harder strokes where it’s long. You can use the eraser to work back over white fur to brighten it and create a softer look.

What Colours Do We See

When painting you always need at least three colours in order to make an object appear three dimensional.

You need a mid tone, highlight as well as a shadow colour.

When painting black hair we can start with black paint as the shadow colour. No worries.

The problem comes in when we try to mix the mid tone and highlight colours.

Our first reaction is to add white to the black in order to lighten it.

If we do that though, we will end up with an animal that appears grey and not black.

I think you will agree that the dog we are painting today is certainly not grey.

The secret then is to look very carefully at black hair.

Black hair is seldom pitch black. Normally it is actually a very dark brown.

You can best see this in the mid tone areas, especially when the hair is in sunlight.

Another factor influencing the colour of black haired animals is that they are constantly outdoors.

A fine dust settles in their coat further increasing the brownish appearance of the hair.

So in order to mix a realistic mid tone for your black haired animals, look for the subtle underlying colour in the hair and play that colour up. More often than not it is a brown colour.

Now let’s figure out what we need to do in order to mix the highlight colour of the dog.

The secret here is to realise that hair is reflective. No matter what colour hair you have. If you walk into a room with say a green light your hair will take on a green tint.

Let’s move on to learning how to do the actual painting of the fur.

The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don’t press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a big circle as a guide for the Labrador retriever dog’s head. First make four small marks to indicate the circle’s height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines to create the shape of the circle. Sketch lightly at first so that it’s easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you’re struggling to draw the circle, trace the outer rim of a glass, a bowl or any other object with a circular edge. For a more detailed guide on the different ways to draw a circle check out this tutorial: Four simple ways to draw a circle.

Step 2: Draw a long, curved, horizontal line across the circle to help you place the Labrador retriever’s facial features later. On top of the horizontal line, near the left side, draw a shorter, curved, vertical line for another guide.

Step 3: Draw a small circle on the lower, left side as a guide for the Labrador retriever’s muzzle. Use the four-marks technique to draw this circle too. Place it directly below the horizontal guide. The lower, left side of this circle should be outside the edge of the big circle.

Sketch The Eyes And Nose

ThoughtCo/Helen South

Careful, smooth shading keeps the eyes looking bright and shiny. Keep your pencil sharp and use small, fine movements to create a smooth texture.

Use the eraser to work back into darker areas to soften marks as needed to enhance dimensionality.

Remember that this is a sketch, not a photorealist drawing. You want to keep the drawing fresh and energetic, so don’t get too obsessed with tiny details.

Add Lighter Values And Begin The Details

Throughout time, the family dog has been a symbol of steadfast loyalty and unconditional love. But capturing that essence on paper can be a little tricky. You can write about it, but a dog’s face is so expressive that sometimes the only way to avoid using 1,000 words is to draw a picture. This article will show you how!

Painting The Nose And Mouth

The nose is a series of continuous shadings so you will have to look very carefully to place the correct colours and the correct tonal values in the correct places.

From there you look to see how they fade into each other.

In order to paint the dimples on the nose I use the tip of a fine liner to tap light dots the dark areas and dark dots into the light areas.

Because the nose is shiny and wet, look how much light is reflecting off the top face of the nose.

In the mouth area, ensure sure the bottom lip is darker than the top lip to show that the top lip is casting a shadow on the bottom lip.

Add The Finishing Details

Mix a golden copper color for integrating the dogs coat with titanium white, raw sienna, yellow oxide and small amounts of cadmium orange and burnt sienna. With a No. 3 round, paint strokes that follow the hair pattern, from the lighter parts of the coat overlapping the darker areas. For details in the darker parts of the coat, take a portion of this color and add more cadmium orange and burnt sienna. Use a separate No. 3 round and the shadow color from Step 1 to soften and integrate. Use a No. 3 round and the darker golden copper to add some detail to the highlighted parts of the dogs coat.

For the bluish areas of the nose and jowls, mix ultramarine blue, burnt umber and titanium white. Paint with a No. 1 round.Use a No. 1 round to mix a small amount of titanium white with touches of ultramarine blue and burnt umber, then paint the teeth.I mixed a portion of the dark green background color with titanium white and cadmium orange. Then I used this color to paint some blades of grass around the dog with a No. 3 round, using sweeping, curved strokes.

Step 2. As normal Ill ask you 2 start this challenging illustration with 2 extremely basic building lines. One circle and one oval. It could not get much easier than this! The circle will act as a guide for the head of the puppy while the oval will be the body.

Lets delve into the drawing now! It is extremely important when you draw a puppy to obtain the snout right and the huge cushioned feet. The snout will assist us as a place and scale the components of the face while the cushioned feet will direct the illustration of the legs. In this case, the puppy will be drawn seen from the three-quarter front.

Step 3. Overall shapes. Another 2 important qualities of the face are the long ears and the real nose. If you get these components best you are a long method in drawing a good puppy.

So sketch the ears in looking after drawing them long and floppy and the little doggy nose.

Painting The Neck & Collar

As you move down towards the body, you can gradually work rougher and less detailed.

This less detail forces the viewer’s eye to move towards the face where there is more to see.

For the same reason I added as little detail into the collar as I could get away with.

In order to make it sit naturally on the dog I did however use a soft Filbert brush to carefully had a few overlapping hairs over the collar.

Lastly I used a rigger brush and very thin paint to add the whiskers and a few detail hairs here and there.

Notice how lovely and shiny the dogs coat looks with all that light reflecting off it.
