How to Draw a Lava Lamp

If you dont have all the ingredients on hand you can make a few substitutions.

Instead of vegetable oil you can use baby oil. We found it created a lot of bubbles and the clarity of the lava lamp was not as good, but it does still work.

Next, if you dont have Alka Seltzer, you can make your own mix. If you ever make bath bombs like us, you already have the ingredients on hand! Simple mix 2 parts baking soda with 1 part citric acid. Add a teaspoon of the mixture and watch the reaction go! The best part is how this helps kids understand that it is once again an acid-base reaction charging our lava lamps. We love those acid-base reactions!

Now, what can you use instead of water? Well we came up with a cool solution that gives our homemade lava lamps glow power!

  • Start with the first flower. Grab that copy you made of your first flower before adding its stroke. You might want to make another copy or two just in case you mess up.

    How Does It Work

      Place 2 tablespoons of baking soda in the bottom of a mason jar. Pour oil into the jar. In a second container add vinegar and a few drops of food colouring, mix. Now, using a dropper, add a few drops of coloured vinegar to the top of the oil and watch the reaction!

      As the bubbles float through the oil down into water the bubbly reaction will be triggered!

      Why This Science Experiment Works

      The water and oil do not mix and the oil doesnt change color because the food coloring is water soluble. The Alka Seltzer reacts with the water to make bubbles of carbon dioxide. The bubbles attach themselves to the blobs of colored water and bring them to the top of the glass. When the bubbles pop the blobs of colored water fall back to the bottom of the glass.

      This lava science experiment is sure to WOW your kids. They may even ask you to do it over and over again like mine did!

      The globules form because oil and water are immiscible. The oil has a nonpolar nature, while water is a polar molecule. No matter how much you shake the bottle, the two components will always separate.

      The movement of the ‘lava’ is caused by the reaction between the seltzer tablets and water. Carbon dioxide gas forms bubbles, which rise to the top of the liquid and cause it to circulate.

      The glow of the lava comes from either phosphorescence or fluorescence, depending on the chemical you used. Fluorescence occurs when a material absorbs energy and almost immediately releases light. A black light is used to make fluorescent materials to keep glowing. Phosphorescence is a slower process in which energy is absorbed and released as light, so once a phosphorescent material is charged with light, it may continue to glow for several seconds, minutes, or even hours, depending on the specific chemicals.

      Have you ever wanted to know how to make a lava lamp without Alka Seltzer tablets? I often find myself without those on hand!

      Weve made lava lamp experiments in the past using Alka Seltzer tablets.

      We actually just did it again with Louis for the first time. It was fun to see his reactions!

      But, the fun didnt last long.

      I ran out of Alka Seltzer fast. I only had 2 tablets to begin with.

      It wasnt even a day later that a member of my Facebook group, The Huddle, asked how to make a lava lamp without Alka Seltzer.

      That got me searching to find an answer! I found an awesome video here with an explanation of what to do.

      Then we had some fun making lava lamp experiments again, but this time, without Alka Seltzer tablets!

      I also finally found some skinny glasses to use. I kept looking for bottles, but once I thought of using glasses, skinny ones were easy to find!

      How To Make The Lava Lamp

    • Break open an oil-soluble marker or pen and place the inked felt into a container of benzyl alcohol. Leaving it in longer will give a darker color, but will also increase the tendency to bleed into the brine.
    • A few minutes is usually a good time to leave the inked felt in the alcohol. A Sharpie bleeds too much into the brine, so choose a different type of marker.
    • The benzyl alcohol, specific gravity 1.043 g/ml, and 4.8% salt water go into the glass container. A bottle about 10 inches tall is good.
    • Build a base to hold the bottle over the lamp using a tin can and plywood. A dimmer on the light will allow you to control heat.
    • You may wish to place a fan at the top of the bottle to cool the liquid at this location.
    • You will need to experiment to get the best distance between the heat source and the glass container.
    • You want about 150 ml benzyl alcohol and the remainder of the liquid to be brine. Seal the bottle, but allow airspace.
    • Try about 1 inch of air space at the top, to allow for expansion of the fluids. The amount of airspace will affect bubble size.
    • Responsible adult supervision is required! Because the materials may be toxic and there is a flammability hazard, this project is not intended for young or inexperienced investors.

      I filled each glass about two-thirds to three-fourths full with water. Another plus of this concoction is that its mostly water and not nearly as much oil!

      From there, the boys took over. They chose their color of food coloring and put a couple drops in each glass.

      I do recommend keeping it on the lighter side to see the lava lamp bubble effect better.

      Next, fill the rest of the glass with oil. Leave a good half an inch at the top of the glass.

      We filled ours too full the first time we tried it.

      And then the fun begins, and this is the secret ingredient to make a lava lamp without Alka Seltzer.

      Early Childhood

      Learn about density with this simple DIY Lava Lamp Experiment!

      Density has to do with how much space something takes up in relation to what its mass is. While density can be a tricky concept for younger scientists to understand right away, this DIY lava lamp experiment is a great opportunity to observe density in action and make some initial observations while enjoying some fizzing good fun!

      Materials:

      • Tall, clear container
      • Alka-Seltzer tablets
      • Food coloring *Warning: Food coloring can stain! Feel free to substitute in washable paint such as liquid watercolor or tempera paint if youre worried about mess. Either way, mess-friendly play clothes are recommended for this DIY lava lamp experiment!

      Directions:

      • Fill your measuring cup with 1 cup water.
      STEP 2
      • Add 10-15 drops of food coloring to your water then stir.Observe the food coloring drops as they enter the water. What do you notice? Do they float? Do they sink? Does the food coloring mix well into the water? What do you see?

      • Fill a clear container ¾ of the way with canola oil.
      STEP 4
      • Pour the dyed water into your clear container, along with your canola oil.

        What do you notice about the water and the canola oil? Do they mix together? Which one sinks to the bottom? Is this the same as what you observed with the food coloring and water?

      STEP 6
      • You can continue adding effervescent tablets as the bubbles slow.
