Draw A Curved Path With The Pen Tool

How to Draw a Line in Photoshop

Lets start by drawing a gentle curving line.

1 Select the Pen tool from the toolbar.

2 Choose Path mode in the Options bar at the top of the screen.Again, note that we could use Shape mode here, but in that mode, Photoshop fills the path with colour when you start drawing and it can become confusing as to where your anchor points are. Well talk about drawing shapes in another post.

3 Click once to put down your first anchor point.

4 Move your pointer to the right of your first anchor point, then up and to the right. This creates a slight curve in the path and as you can see, two handles appear either side of the second anchor point. These are the direction handles and the control the direction of the curve and the size of the curve.

5 Add another point farther to the right and click and drag in a downward direction. You should now be seeing a nice gentle wave-like path.

6 Add one more point to the right and drag out horizontally.

7 To finish drawing your path, just Ctrl + Click / Cmd + Click . Notice how the Pen Tool cursor changes and a small asterisk appears. This indicates that when you start to draw again, you will be starting a new path.

Make Your Final Tweaks

You’re not done yet! Playing with the opacity of your layers and cleaning up any dark spots that you see in your image will put the final touch on your new pencil sketch.

Adjust opacity of layers

You can adjust the opacity of the top two layers to reduce the intensity of the pencil shading.

In the image below, the top layer’s opacity is reduced to 60% and the next layer down has an opacity of 70%.

You should not adjust the opacity of the bottom two layers as doing so could undermine the line drawing effect you have created.

Clean up any artifacts

In the example image, there are several places where the white background looks as if it has smudges, or dark spots.

In order to remove dark spots such as these, stamp the layers by selecting all layers, including the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, within the Layers panel. Type CTRL+A+E to create a stamped layer, which will appear at the top of your Layers panel.

Set your foreground color to white in the Toolbar and choose the Brush tool from the Toolbar. Within the new stamped layer, carefully paint over any smudges using the brush tool.

Your finished image will now look like a pencil sketch.

Combine Curved And Straight Path Segments With The Pen Tool

Now well draw paths that combine straight corner points with curved or smooth points, but first a brief explanation of directional lines.

Curved anchor points have directional lines that are opposite each other, 180° apart.

Corner points either have no directional lines, only one directional line, or two directional lines that are at an angle that is not 180°.

Probably the most difficult part of drawing with the Pen Tool in Photoshop is joining up two curves on a corner point. If you can do this, then you can do any type of drawing with the Pen.

For this exercise, were going to draw the path below.

  • Select the Pen tool or press P on the keyboard.
  • Were starting with a straight segment, which is dead easy, so click once for your starting point and then click again to put down your second anchor.
  • Now were going into a curve. Move the pointer over the second anchor point and hold down Alt or Option , the cursor changes to show what looks like an upside down v. This indicates that you are going to convert the point from being a straight point to a curved point.
  • Then click and drag downwards to create your next anchor point and finish the curve you started.
  • Now we need another curve. However, you will find that if you simply click and drag a new point, the curve is going down the wrong way. .

  • Add a new anchor point and drag down to finish the second curve.
  • Repeat step 6, 7 and 8 to create a third upwards curve.
  • Ctrl / Cmd + click anywhere to complete the path.

You just started learning Photoshop and you want to how can you draw a straight line in Photoshop. Though Photoshop is basically designed for photo editing, it also works great for graphic design.

In this tutorial, were going to see how to draw a straight line in Photoshop.

You can use three methods to draw a straight line in Photoshop. These are

  • Line Tool: easy to use but not as easy as the Brush Tool. But its more flexible than the Brush Tool

Draw A Closed Circle Path With The Pen Tool

How To Draw Straight Lines In Photoshop

A closed vector path is simply a path where the first anchor point is the same as the last vector point, for example, a circle, a rectangle, a star. Well draw a circle.

  • Select the Pen tool from the toolbar.
  • Choose Path mode in the Options bar at the top of the screen.
  • An anchor point appears where you first clicked and two direction lines extend above and below the anchor point.

  • Continue the curve, by clicking to add a new anchor point and holding and dragging downwards.
  • If you make a mistake while youre drawing, choose Edit > Undo New Anchor Point or press Ctrl +Z or Cmd + Z to undo the last point you drew, and try again.

  • Move your pointer over your first anchor point and notice how a small circle appears below the pen tool cursor. This indicates that if you click on the first point, you will close the path. So go ahead and click on the point.
  • Your path is now closed and you should have a near perfect circle or at least a reasonable ellipse shaped path. It doesnt matter if its a little egg-shaped :).

Remember you want to use as few anchor points as possible to get smooth curves when drawing with the Pen Tool.

Tip: If you hold down Shift as you click and drag, you constrain the slope of the directional line to 45° increments.

When youre finished, lock the layer, and use the visual guides to complete your project. Hide the layer when its not needed, and finally, delete the layer when youre done with the job. One more thingremember to turn off the Arrowheads option.

Draw Curves With The Pen Tool

You create a curve by adding an anchor pointwhere a curve changes direction, and dragging the direction linesthat shape the curve. The length and slope of the direction linesdetermine the shape of the curve.

Curves are easier to editand your system can display and print them faster if you draw themusing as few anchor points as possible. Using too many points can alsointroduce unwanted bumps in a curve. Instead, draw widely spacedanchor points, and practice shaping curves by adjusting the lengthand angles of the direction lines.

  • Select the Pen tool.
  • Position the Pen tool where you want the curve to begin, and hold down the mouse button.

The first anchor point appears, and the Pen tool pointerchanges to an arrowhead.

  • Drag to set the slope of the curve segment youre creating, and then release the mouse button.

In general, extend the direction line about one third ofthe distance to the next anchor point you plan to draw.

Holddown the Shift key to constrain the tool to multiples of 45°.

This option does not work together with Pulled String Mode, so you’ll have to turn that off first. When you tick the Stroke Catch-Up option and start drawing you will notice again a gap between the start point and the mouse cursor. But, this time the gap gets smaller. So, the algorithm makes the brush stroke catch up with the mouse. So, it’s like the brush stroke is a missile tracking your mouse cursor and getting closer and closer to it. The higher the Smoothing slower “the missile”. Also “the missile” slows down as it gets closer to the mouse cursor. In this way the shaking of the strokes you draw are smoothened and you will get much smoother curves.
