Why Would You Want To Strike Through Text Anyway
Its a good question. Why cross out words when you can just delete them? When youre tracking changes in Word so that you can collaborate with other people, keeping that deleted text visible, but struck through, lets them know what has changed. They can even review those change and accept or deny them. Weve got a full guide on keeping track of changes made to a Word document, so were not going to cover all that in this article. Its a good read, though, if youre collaborating on a document.
Instead, were going to focus on how to apply strikethrough character formatting and why you might want to.
So, why bother? Well, you might be collaborating with someone and not want to use the Track Changes feature. Maybe they dont use Word, and youre sending it to them to view in Google Docs, or as a PDF they can print out. Either way, you can strike through text as a suggestion that it be deleted, but leave it in place for them to see. This is particularly useful in a situation where, for example, youre tutoring a student in a subject like a foreign language. Its much easier for the student to learn if they can go back and see the mistakes along with the corrections.
Some writers also use strikethrough text to show a change of thinking in a document. Or maybe you just want to be annoying funny.
Whatever the reason, were here to show you how to do it.

Draw A Line With Connection Points
A connector is a line with connection points at each end that stays connected to the shapes you attach it to. Connectors can be straight , elbow , or curved . When you choose a connector, dots appear on the shape outline. These dots indicate where you can attach a connector.
Important: In Word and Outlook, connection points work only when the lines and the objects they are connecting are placed on a drawing canvas. To insert a drawing canvas, click the Insert tab, click Shapes, and then click New Drawing Canvas at the bottom of the menu.
To add a line that connects to other objects, follow these steps.
On the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click Shapes.
Under Lines, click the connector that you want to add.
Note: The last three styles listed under Lines are not connectors. Rest your pointer over each style to see its name before clicking it.

Apply Strikethrough From Format Option
As I said there is no direct option in Excel for strikethrough, but actually, theres an option that you can access from format options. This is what you need to do.
It works the same as other options. You can apply it on multiple cells and on the partial text. Want to know the best part? You can also access other formatting options which are nowhere on the ribbon through the same.
Make Things Easier By Creating A Keyboard Shortcut
Word has loads of keyboard shortcuts, including a bunch for applying formatting. Unfortunately, theres no built-in shortcut for applying strikethrough formatting. If its something you do a lot, though, you can create your own key combo.
Start by opening that Font window back up. Now, press Ctrl+Alt+Plus . Your cursor should very briefly turn into a clover shape. After that happens, click the Strikethrough option and a Customize Keyboard window should open.
Here, you can assign your preferred keyboard combo by clicking once in the Press New Shortcut Key box and then pressing the keys you want to use. If the combination you choose already has a shortcut function, Word will let you know that its currently assigned to something else. You can, of course, still use it even if its assigned to something else, but its better to try to find a combination that doesnt have any current functions. We find Ctrl+Alt+- is pretty easy to remember and doesnt have any other use in Word.
Press the Assign button, and then go back to your Word doc and try it out.
Now you have your customized strikethrough shortcut!

How To Use Strikethrough In Excel Online
In Excel Online, the strikethrough option is exactly where you’d expect to find it – next to the other formatting buttons on the Home tab, in the Font group:
However, there’s a fly in the ointment – it’s not possible to select non-adjacent cells or ranges in Excel Online. So, if you need to cross out multiple entries in different parts of your sheet, you will have to select each cell or a range of contiguous cells individually, and then click the strikethrough button.
The strikethrough shortcut works perfectly in Excel Online too and is often the fastest way to toggle the strikethrough formatting on and off.
